My first "bad" experience
Lee replied to Grateful Heart's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry you had that discomfort. It sounds awful! Congrats on being a month out with that incredible weightloss!! We're all so different. I've been able to gulp down Water or tea since around day 8. Sometimes I wonder if I even have a Sleeve, except that I saw pics of my worm looking Sleeve. -
I had surgery on Wednesday Feb 17th. I have a desk job and I'm 59 years old. I think age may play a difference in how quickly we heal. I started back to work from my home office on Tuesday Feb 23rd. I worked in spurts for the first few days and rested a lot. Monday Feb 22nd I started working 1/2 days at home and 1/2 in the office. Wednesday the 24th I upped it to working 11-5 in the office. I could have done full days easily all week but have the luxury to work from home as needed. Next week will be back to my usual routine of 8-5 in the office.

To snack healthy or not???
Lee replied to ladylaurel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program calls for no snacking or supplementation. Three meals spaced 4-6 hours apart. That said, today is day 16 for me so I'll need to see what works best for me. -
I am always curious about what everyone is eating so I thought I'd give a sample menu. This is what I ate yesterday. I use Myfitnesspal.com to track my food. I was moved to pureed foods yesterday and I'm in heaven. Finally full after being really hungry for the last four days on full liquids. Here's what the format looks like in Myfitnesspal. My program calls for no Protein supplementation or snacking which is different than a lot of other plans. My surgery was Feb. 17th, so last Wednesday started my third week . I'm down 14.4 pounds since Surgery morning at Kaiser. Today my goal is to get in more protein, closer to 60. I found it really easy to eat pureed yesterday. I've been getting in 64 oz of fluids or more since day 5. We're all so different on this journey. I try really hard not to compare myself to anyone else. My Nutritionist on Wednesday told me to expect my weight loss to slow down now that I'm on Pureed. I'm visualizing it really getting going now that I'll have more energy! No need to put negative thoughts in there. Mini, I'm going to follow your progress with this. I'm two weeks behind you and starting pureed food today. I've been hungry a lot the last 4 days so I'm curious to see how my first meal with sit with my Sleeve this morning.

New Girl Coming on board Sleeve Surg.
Lee replied to bellyfat's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello and Welcome!! I had a fractured ankle on Thanksgiving 2007 and then major ankle surgery July 2008. I'm hoping that any residual pain will leave once I've let go of some weight. I'm only two weeks out so I don't have long range numbers but I can tell you that I'm down 13 pounds in two weeks. I've had no complications and love my Sleeve! -
We're all so different. I had to dump the Fuzzy Navel because I thought it was vile. I loved Chike pre-op and ordered big chocolate and orange tubs. Post-op they gave me severe runs. Muscle Milk Light is way too sweet post-op. Optimum Nutrition Rich Chocolate also gave me the runs for 5 days then on day 13 I could tolerate it. I think the whey really wreaked havoc with my system during the full liquid stage. I tried Isopure RTD post op and just the smell made me want to hurl. I mixed with soymilk so it wasn't milk causing intolerance. So please don't stock up on anything until you're post op. Get some sample packets to try once you're on full liquids. You may be very surprised at how sticky sweet everything tastes. I know... amazing that things can be too sweet!

Analynn, having been recently Sleeved, I can only offer my personal opinion. The Sleeve doesn't require follow-up for fills and unfills. The results for the Sleeve are as good or better than the RNY. The Sleeve is made from the muscular part of the stomach so that it should not stretch the way that the RNY pouch does. The Sleeve doesn't have malabsorption the way that RNY does so once the Sleeve is healed and you've lost your weight, you can eat anything in small amounts if that's what you choose to do. Kaiser has the same eating plan, regardless of the surgery. I would be happy to answer any questions if you PM me. Also, I would suggest checking out our sister website.. verticalsleevetalk.com or go to Obesityhelp.com and find the Sleeve forum to ask questions. I love my Sleeve!

While on full liquids, I could easily eat 6 oz of plain yogurt. I've been hungry a lot. I guess it's so different for us all. :w00t:

Welcome to VST! I'm so glad you're speaking up. I had my Sleeve on February 17th at Kaiser Richmond. Your process sounds similar to mine. Are you at the SSF Kaiser? You're up for surgery in a week. Stay close and check in with us to let us know how you're doing both pre-op and then post-op. Post your questions and concerns so that we can support you and Celebrate you.

I like Fage, Oikos and siggi's which seems to be new on the market. I think the Oikos is the creamiest and least tangy.

Diane, I'm moving to pureed foods tomorrow. I too had a hernia repair with my sleeve on the 17th. I'll let you know how I do. So far I haven't had any problems in the full liquid stage. We can compare notes!

Introducing new foods too fast??
Lee replied to pnw218's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh YAY!! My NUT moved me to pureed foods starting tomorrow! I'm quite excited to get more nutrition. PNW, I understand hungry. I got hungry on day 10 and I've been that way since. I started getting a little afraid that I would be one of the hungry ones, then realized that on pureed I'll start feeling full again. The funny thing is that regardless of how hungry I got, 1/2 cup of greek yogurt and I was full. I think it's great that you're re-evaluating your eating and will give you sleeve time to heal. -
Introducing new foods too fast??
Lee replied to pnw218's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on Protonix. I never had reflux prior to surgery. I had surgery on a Wednesday and on Friday night I woke up every half hour with what felt like acid in my throat/mouth. Not pleasant at all. I email my doc who suggested sleeping more elevated. I did that for a week and never had another episode of reflux. Now I can sleep flat, even on my stomach and I'm fine. -
Good Morning everyone! Good luck with the fills. Analynn, Congratulations!!! Pre-op Goal!! How cool is that! John, I've been hungry the last few days. How many calories have you been eating? I average around 400 but seem to be hungry a lot. You made your 15 goal... so proud of you!!! I'm at 13.2 so I'm quite proud of that. Yup, I hope we get advanced. A little pureed food sounds pretty good to me right about now.

My plan is: Day 1-5 clear liquids Day 6-15 or 16 full liquids Day 15 to 24 pureed foods My NUT is calling me today and I hope she'll advance me to purees by the end of the week. YUM! We're one day apart on surgery dates. -
Protein Powders at... Whole Foods
Lee replied to youknowit's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I don't know why they change so much. Sweet things taste so much sweeter. After drinking a protein shake (like I just did), I have this sticky sweet taste in my mouth for hours. YUCK. -
Thank you wannalise! These two weeks have gone so quickly. I can't believe how great I'm feeling. I know that moving to pureed foods will give me loads more energy. I can't wait to watch your progress!

I think you're doing an awesome job. I bet if you just keep doing what you're doing, you'll be at goal before you know it. Maybe on the weekends you can walk a little longer? I find that I lose better when I can up the exercise a little. I'm still at the one mile a day point but hope to up it to two miles in the next few weeks. Take pride in all the things you're doing to improve your health. You deserve big kudos for that!

Chancie, I don't know how I missed your post the other day. What a remarkable journey you've had in the last year. You look stunning and vibrant and happy! I'm so inspired by your story and the work you've put into getting where you are today.

Hi Tonya, You have a lot going on right now. I wonder if you switched to Protein shakes for a couple of days if the feeling would go away. I had my gallbladder out in November and tolerate meat just fine. I was eating steaks a few weeks later. Do you think any of this might have to do with anxiety about your surgery? It doesn't seem like a trip to your PCP would hurt anything. I'd tell your surgeon about your gum, but I bed they'd see it anyhow. It's probably in the part of your stomach that will be cut away. I've never heard of gum staying for 5 years. Good luck and I hope you find something that comforts you so you can relax before surgery.

Protein Powders at... Whole Foods
Lee replied to youknowit's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Hi, I would say, don't stock up on too much for post-op. Your tastes may really change. When I went to full liquids, I had violent runs for 5 days until I figured out that it was the Whey Protein doing it to me. I tried the Jarrow brand Rice Protein Powder from Whole Foods this week. It was vile and I was so happy they let me return it yesterday. I like Jay Robb but haven't tried the egg white protein as I'm allergic to eggs. Vitalady.com is from Obesityhelp website. You can go to her website and buy individual sample sizes of lots of different protein powders. -
Lynda, I'm doing the Happy Dance with you as we count down to your surgery. I'm so excited for you to be on the Loser's Bench with us!!

Hi Barbara, I've read that 5-10 pounds a month is usual after Sleeve surgery, so you seem to be right on track. At 7 pounds a month you'd lose your weight in 11 months. How cool would that be? I bet there will be months when you'll lose more than that. Your fat looks a little high to me for the calories you're eating. What are your fat sources? I look to the Cornell guide for calories, carbs and Protein but they don't talk about fat. I'm still really new post-op, today starts week 3 for me. Still on full liquids. My fat yesterday was 7 grams with 417 calories. I bet my fat will also go up on pureed foods. Cornell Guide: Weeks 3 - 3 months (Soft Foods): Total Cal: 600-800 Total Carbs: <40 Total Protein: 70 - 90 3 - 12 months (Regular Food): Tota Cal: <800 Total Carbs: <40 Total Protein: 70 - 90 I know some of the more experiences Sleevers will chime in with advice for you. I think you're doing great!
