  1. So, I'm curious to know from the initial seminar to the surgery date how long did it take everyone to get a date?

I've been putting off going but my PCP has been telling me that I need to go. So, I have my seminar visit on the 13th. I'd like to get the surgery done before the end of the year so I don't have to start another deductible...

If you expect your insurance company to pay for it your chances of having surgery by the end of the year are slim to none.

Your best bet is to call and ask the insurance company.

  2. thank you guys for your responses. i must have misunderstood what the nutritionist was saying. maybe the sipping is for the first couple of weeks post op. i am so excited about this journey i must have zoned out for a minute while she was talking. i can't stop thinking about 'life after' being banded.

so excited! so determined! to be successful!:)

If you are unsure about something your surgeon or nutritionist say, please ask them to clarify. There really is no such thing as a stupid question and this is for the rest of your life.

You'll be fine if you keep a positive attitude!

  3. I have a question. I reached my goal but never really changed my eating patterns. I just eat less food. Will I be able to keep my band forever? I sure hope so. If I gain, I'll just get a fill. Has anyone else continued to eat sweets and fried food? Have you had any complications?

    Congrats!!

I am almost at goal and the only thing I changed in my diet is smaller portions; no fast food and no soda. I eat out 5 or 6 days a week. Fried chicken and pizza are still on the menu.

I also walk at least 5 miles a day where I used to just walk from the couch to the bathroom a few times a day.

I plan on keeping my band because it will keep me honest and I will never again be tempted to shovel the food into my pie hole like I used to.

  4. Thanks Jacqui,

Looks as if I'll be fine with a liquid prep. I can understand my LB doc wanting to do an unfill if I had to take 20 big pills. I would not want them trying to get through the small opening in my band.

    FYI

Just as a warning to others who may read this, here is more info on the pill form of colon prep: -

The food and Drug Administration has added a "black box" warning — the sternest warning possible — to the two prescription bowel cleansers that come in tablet form. The new warning stems from reports of kidney damage in patients who took the pills, which contain sodium phosphate, in preparation for a colonoscopy.

Also, the FDA, which can require warnings only on prescription drugs, said no over-the-counter sodium phosphate products should be used for bowel-cleansing. That led C.B. Fleet Co. to announce a voluntary recall of Phospho-soda, a non-prescription laxative that in larger doses has been used for bowel-cleansing.

My DH was given the pill prep just 2 months ago, so GI docs are still perscribing it!!!

How are you doing Jacqui? I hope all is OK with you.

Thanks for the info! Phospho-soda is what I was given prior to my colonospcopies. I have moved 1,850 miles since. Sohopefully, it will be something else next time.

  5. I drink plenty of Guinness every other week or so.

I've tried drinking garbage like PBR, Coors, Bud and miller but they are very painful due to the high amount of carbonation.

As mentioned above, it is all empty calories and a lot of them. Be prepared to work that much harder to lose the weight if you choose to drink.

Knaroz, You're wrong on the mixer thing. The hard alcohol has more sugar and calories than anything you mix it with.

  6. I had my surgery on Oct 21st and I am having a hard time forcing myself to drink and I am starting to feel like I am getting dehydrated. I am going to try to really concentrate on drinking...its a lot harder than I thought it would be. I have been horrible about the Water and the Protein water...and thats all i have been ingesting since my surgery.

Patrice, please talk to your surgeon about this if you mean you find it physically hard to drink.

I was guzzling down Water and Protein Shakes a few hours out of surgery. I did have a fill that slowed my drinking down for a day or so but I don't think it is normal to last a long time.

  7. I've had 3 colonoscopies but none since banding.

I have never had to drink the gallon of Water mixed with the laxative. My dad has. So, I know what you are referring to.

I had to drink a couple of small bottles of foul tasting phospho something or other. Talk to you doctor about an alternative laxative.

I personally would not not get unfilled just to take a laxative but on the other hand, my surgeon suggests getting an unfill for any surgery you are being put under for.

  8. I am very confused...do they fill the band when u have the surgery or do they wait until you are healed and then fill i have been doing research and am a little confused as to when u actually start using the band..and how soon after surgery do you start loosing anything typically??

The band comes with 3cc in it. Some spills out during surgery. Some surgeons remove it all. Some surgeons leave it. Some surgeons add more. It all depends on the surgeon.

The band and/or fills DO NOT make you lose weight at all. It is how much you eat; what you eat and how much you exercise that makes you lose weight.

The band is simply a tool to limit how much you eat.
