Hi Everyone ~I got a call from my surgeon's office and they scheduled me for my first meeting with the surgeon on April 2. I can't believe I have to wait so long but I'm just proud of myself that I've come this far.
Ok, the billing clerk didnt sound too optimistic about me getting the VSG approved. She said that they have only done 4 or 5 VSGs and only 1 person got approved on the first try and the rest were appeals.
I called my insurance company and gave them the code that I saw on this website (43755). He said that the code is in their system but he gave me the run around on whether they would approve it or not. He couldnt tell me if its still considered experimental or now a legit WLS.
I hate having to wait the next two months not knowing if I even have a shot at this surgery. I started relooking at RNY and it still makes me completely uneasy.
Any advice would be great!!!!!
Let us know what company your insurance is with and those on the forum who have it too may be able to help more.
Mine is Cigna and they don't cover the sleeve. I was not entirely unhappy about it, because I did not want to have to jump through 6-12 months of hoops, tests, waiting, before I could get the sleeve, once I knew that was what I wanted. I had saved up, and did research on surgeons, then made my choice, In a month, I had my sleeve. It was so easy and no arguing with insurance. The cost in Mexico was about half what it would have cost in the US. I paid 8700. Dr Jossart in San Francisco charges 1700 plus the cost of labs etc. In some places it is much higher than that.
I hope you can get your sleeve without too much of a wait. Good luck!

Hooray for you! Welcome to the loser's bench! So glad for your great error...I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Now just sip, walk, rest and burp. Let us know how you are progressing.

I did too...it just "goes with the territory". Look at it this way...now you have a good excuse! Ha Ha. :thumbup1:

Awesome kiddo!!!
Congratulations!

Lets see, bringing my swim trunks, tennis racquet,, oh wait,, that is another trip.. I am bringing personal hygiene stuff, gas X, bathrobe, slippers, underwear (without the racing stripes), my iPod with a couple new movies loaded, a book, bottled Water, a Protein bullet (which I hate), chapstick, C-PAP machine, all my current medications, pill spliter and passport. Also, some clean clothes to wear on the drive home. About 365miles, so not bad. My kitchen is stocked with post op food for when I get back.Loser: sounds like you are doing great on your preopdiet. Your liver should be nicely shrunk, making for a much safer surgery.
Are you driving yourself home? Be sure you stop every 45-60 minutes and walk around some, to prevent blood clots during the drive. Best of luck to you. Let us know how you are doing.

Try Jay Robb chocolate whey Protein shake. With one cup of lactaid fat free milk, it is 33 grams Protein and 190 calories.
Laughing Cow cheese wedges, four tiny wedges throughout the day for Snacks will add 10 gms of protein and 140 calories!
Get 600-800 calories, 70 or more gms protein and at least 65 ounces of fluids will give you the best wt loss. Below that, the body does not like to shake it off for some reason. Congratulations of breaking the stall!

RLocke,
I agree, your surgeon needs to know if you are in severe pain. There may be a complication that needs to be attended to. Please call him right away! Are you sipping clear fluids and allowing a burp between each sip? I found that at first, if I did not let a little burp come up, I had a lot of esophageal spasm, which is really bad pain. Also if I warmed my fluids a little, there was less discomfort swallowing. Warm caffiene-free spice teas were great, as well as home made chicken broth.
I did not need pain meds once I was home, but had a box of Toradol that Dr Aceves gives all his patients at discharge, in case I needed them. Your surgeon should prescribe something for you.
Let us know how you are doing! We are cheering for you and glad to have you with us on the loser's bench.

Ask for something for the nausea or pain as soon as you feel the slightest twinge, you will get it right away. Rest, walk, sip, burp and you'll get through these hardest days. Then you will see the pounds just melt away! Congratulations on joining the loser's bench! We are cheering for you!

Anyone else get back pain after eating mushies or solids? I get it after eating even very mushy salmon diluted into a mush...it is right between my shoulder blades. I am not a person to take pain medicine but I have to stop working and take tylenol to get some relief, after I eat, the pain is so bad.
Anyone else getting this?

Hey I just had a question for all of you. I have a lump in my arm just past where I had my IV for my surgery. Do you think this is a blood clot? And if so, what should I do? Any advise would be helpful.Bernadette

Barbara,
I am praying that all will be well with you.

How about ice cream? Bluebell moolenium crunch is fantastic.

Dr Jossart,
Is strength training safe starting 4 months post-vsg in the presence of a 4 mm epiphrenic diverticulum (confirmed as present, by 4 physicians, see photo below) that extends to the left of the esophagus? Could the increase in intrathoracic pressure, and increased heart rate, possibly cause the diverticulum to rupture causing a leak? Thank you for your comments.

Hooray for you! There is more great stuff to come!

I promise I'm not sensitive, and I know you aren't being prickly.
I'm only concerned because I've dropped 7lbs in 1 week. I haven't lost like that in months upon months except when I was in WV for Thanksgiving and was living on yogurt and Protein bars because I could not bring myself to eat all the fat-filled, grease-ridden, fried foods they consume up there.
That's my only concern. I have actually been eating more this week, and truly adding in more carbs. I wasn't trying to lose. I really wanted to maintain between 145-150.
I think I'm going to get some more greek yogurt, nuts, and just start piling in the Protein, good fats and good carbs. If I can't maintain, it puts my "baby making" on hold.
I also started Wellbutrin last week to help me quit smoking. I posted a question in this same forum, but didn't get a reply so I'm not sure if this one will get a reply either.
I did put in a call to my surgeon, but I probably won't get a call back until Wednesday at the earliest.
Aha, big clue...Wellbutrin diminishes appetite and causes weight loss in a lot of people.

christabel,
Welcome to the sleevers world...your post made me laugh, I love your sense of humor!
Even though you are not planning to go to Mexico for your surgery, due to your most impressive inquiring mind you would probably find it helpful to read the post on researching mexican sleeve surgeons. It applies to any surgeon for the most part. Look at this link: Researching Mexican Sleeve Surgeons
By the way, what's the best toothbrush?

thank you cajun!!!You are welcome! A lot of canadians fly down to be "sleeved" by Dr Aceves.

thinoneday: I don't know why, but a lot of sleevers don't tolerate eggs until months into recovery...so you might just want to put them on the shelf for a while. And when you do try them, be sure they are real soft. Give your sleeve a rest when you have a "sleeve reject" day...go back to mushies and liquids for 24 hours so it can heal. It's probably screaming at you right now! This too shall pass!
