  2. Happy 63rd Birthday Rick4man!

  3. 2 years has passed since you registered at LapBandTalk! Happy 2nd Anniversary Rick4man!

  4. I had surgery on 7/30 and talked with my surgeon wants to wait to do the first fill at 13 weeks. I have a 14 cc band and the surgeon even took the 3 cc's of saline that comes in it from the factory. I suspect that it will take some time to reach my 'sweet spot'. I am on soft foods right now and feel like the band is not yet helping. I have managed to loose 35 lbs since starting the pre-op diet, all on willpower. I really could use some help here.

    Insulin and Weight Loss

Greeting from Idaho! I was banded 7/30/09. Prior to the pre-op diet I was on an insulin pump at a basilar rate of 3.9 U/hr and my sensitivity to insulin was 1 Unit would lower my BG ONLY 6 mg%. After the pre-op diet, I was down to 1 U/hr basal and 1 U would lower my BG about 12 mg%. Now after the clear liquid week, my basal rate is 0.6 U/hr and sensitivity is 1 U = decrease 18 mg%. In other words, my insulin resistance is way down and I really hope that the day comes (soon?) that I can gift the pump to someone that can use it. Diabetes has improved with only a 10% BW reduction. Hope that HTN will improve eventually. Best wishes on your battle with your person dragon. Mine is curled in the corner waiting to win again when my willpower weakens. Hope the battle can wait the 3 months that my surgeon wants to wait before the first fill. (I have a 14 cc band and it had 3 cc's in it to start.) HW 310/SW 285/ CW 275/ GW 175
  6. I am a type II diabetic on an insulin pump, and Actos for the last 5 years. When I started the pre-op diet my wt. was 307 and my basal insulin rate was 3.9 U/hr with boluses to cover carb loads. On the day of surgery, I was down to 287 and my basal rate was down to 1 U/hr and I am off Actos. Now on post-op day 5, I am down to 0.6 U/hr of insulin, but then I am essentially in starvation mode for at least a few more days. Wt was 276 today, so I am very pleased. I suspect that the rapid wt. loss,in my case, is due to the decreased insulin use (Insulin is lipogenic.) So far I am very pleased. BP meds haven't changed yet but I think that will eventually change. My major motivation to have the surgery was my declining renal function. My nephrologist told me that I would be on dialysis in 2-3 yrs unless I dropped 100 lbs. So I'm on my way.
