    Hi All!

I wanted to start a thread for African-American sleevers (no worries I HEART all sleevers from the rainbow). I just thought, no scientific proof, that African-American sleevers may respond to the surgery different than our lovely non-African American sleeved sisters and brothers. I wanted to know if we had the same skin issue, hair problems, and other surgery related issues. Also, how to deal with the culture shock. African-American "soul food" may be something of the past... or not. So I was just looking for a space to voice culture related issues and concens.

PS- I TRULY  ALL SLEEVERS.

Well after almost 3 years of hell of almost constant vomitting, discomfort and pain, my band is coming out on May 23rd and I am having gastric bypass... The new doc that I see here in FL (I was banded in CA) says 60% of his business now is removing bands and revising to either the sleeve or bypass. I wish I would have known this 3 yrs ago and I would have had bypass to begin with. Well you live and learn. So off on a new journey for me. Wish me luck. Leah

I'm a newbie/3 year banded out of Dallas Texas 25 years old. In the beginning the lap band was good for about 4 months losing only 25 lbs. college student very stressed I started to eat the wrong things and found loop holes to not being restricted eating on the run. I became content again with my weight and on a student salary unable to get fills as a cash pay bander. So now I have gained back all my weight +5 and I'm ready to get serious and lose some weight, and today is day one. For the last year I have had issues with vomiting and stomach pain so will plan on getting it checked out before another fill, but introducing myself And hope I can get inspired and stop blaiming the band for not losing weight and blame myself

well, #1 for me is slowing down my eating. Before surgery I could eat a huge plate of food in a matter of minutes. If I did that now, the food would buildup in the pouch and it would make me throw it up. It's not the same kind of sick as when you have the flu. It starts as a lot of saliva coming out and then maybe a little bit of food. Now I measure out what I am supposed to eat and take my time. This has kept my intake to what it should be.
