At what point can you be reasonably sure that "leak" danger has passed?
Tiffykins replied to kaykay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On OH, there was a lady who had a leak at 7 months post-op. . . She said she had symptoms that were dismissed for 4 months. My surgeon told me that leaks are a concern for at least 3-6 months post op, and even further out, if a patient makes bad food choices, overeats and vomits. -
I'm in there now, and will be on until 11pm. . .

question about things that expand in your tummy
Tiffykins replied to ash's topic in Food and Nutrition
What kind of dumplings? Like chicken and dumplings, or chinese dumplings? Chicken and dumplings - the dumplings are typically made from biscuits which can expand in the tummy, or from a self-rising white flour/water mixture. Chinese dumplings - I don't know what they are made out of, but I'm sure it's some type of dough. I can eat about 1/3 of an eggroll including the outershell, and 1/2 of the inside of one without the outershell. I've eaten tiny bites of biscuit with a bit of gravy, and did just fine. -
Good luck tomorrow ! ! ! I'll be keeping you in my thoughts. . .

mmm...re banding or sleeve
Tiffykins replied to possum's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I had a couple of options when I was considering my revision from band to sleeve. My port was flipped, and was causing the band to tug on my stomach. I hated every aspect of the band (except the first 6 weeks) and only had it in for 8 months. I could of had the port replaced and repositioned along with the tubing, but I didn't really want to deal with it possibly happening again. I opted for the sleeve, and couldn't be happier to have gotten rid of the band. -
I get nauseated when I get overheated or if the store/place is really humid/sticky. I've had this issue since surgery on June 3rd. I hope with time it gets better. . .

There are phases for the diet post-op, each program is different. For the band, I was on Clear Liquids (anything I could see through including sugar free jello) for 7 days, then full liquids (sf pudding, custards, fruit free yogurt, super thin cream of wheat, etc) for 7 days, then mushies for 7 days, then proceed to regular food very slowly. With my band everything had to be "moist", meat could never be microwaved, I lived on condiments such as ketchup, A1 steak sauce, Ranch dressing. With the sleeve, I did have a leak because of the damage the band had done to my stomach. My stomach looked like hamburger meat when they removed my band and found adhesions all along the tubing from the band to the port. I was on clear liquids after the leak repair for 14 days, then transitioned to full liquids, and mushies simultaneously for a week. I will say that leaks are three times more likely with a revision. Find out your surgeon's leak stats, how many staple lines does has your surgeon performed, complication rate, how many sleeves have they completed? You have to learn to eat completely differently with both procedures. I returned to work the Monday after my band surgery on a Wednesday. I did not return to work after my revision because I had complications. I resigned from my position because technically, I didn't have to work, my husband is deployed, and I needed to focus on my recovery and not worry about my job. I am not the "normal" case, but there are risk with both surgeries. Research, research, and research more.

I had a band, and I truly believe the idea of a band being "reversible" is overstated, and absolutely absurd. The band being there changes your anatomy, adhesions and scar tissue, it isn't as "reversible" as everyone likes to claim. I had mine for 8 months, and revised to the sleeve. The band was such a pain, and I felt mentally and emotionally exhausted because of the lack of restriction. I never knew what I could eat one day, and couldn't eat the next. Some days everything would go down, the next, I was lucky if liquids didn't make me slime and be uncomfortable. I had the same pre-op diet for both procedures. Low carb, low fat, higher Protein. All surgeons are different on their pre-op diet requirements. Follow up appointments with the band were a pain. Getting fills was not fun, plus I had a flipped port that caused all of my complications. Trying to compare the two is like night and day. I have had restriction since surgery unlike the band. I had restriction due to swelling, but once that wore off (6 weeks), I didn't have any restriction for the next 6.5 months, and even though I did everything correctly, I was pretty much dieting and didn't lose any weight. I was in constant, chronic pain every day from my port being flipped, and the tubing was tugging on my stomach. I learned a lot with the band, but I am so grateful I was able to revise to the sleeve.

Welcome and congrats on getting your life back. . . The being "exhausted/weak" does fade as you transition into the next food phases. Stay positive, and congrats again.

hey again--anyone relate?
Tiffykins replied to photogirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm struggling with the same issues. I've been able to pinpoint my problem. It's not getting enough water/liquid. I bumped myself back to mushies/this last week because I just can't tolerate food right now. I've tried to eat more, but I'm just not able to do so yet. I'm taking anti-nausea meds daily, and on Prilosec which hasn't really helped yet and it's been 2 weeks. I'm not getting in nearly enough calories or Protein, but I am hoping it's getting better. My surgeon says that it's my body adjusting to my new anatomy. I've just been trying everyday to work at eating something different to see what I can and can not tolerate. But, nothing sounds appetizing at all which makes eating not so much fun. I hope things get better for you also. My surgeon just told me to keep trying different foods, to stay positive, and to increase my water/liquid intake. I'll keep you in my thoughts, and hang in there, I know how tough this new life is. . . -
If you haven't already post this on the main forum. . . I am not sure how much traffic the blog area gets on a daily basis. I don't have any personal experience on this surgeon.

I'm in early tonight just FYI. . . I'm technically on Central time because we're on the Northwest Panhandle of Florida near Pensacola.

Home early and feeling kind of yucky!
Tiffykins replied to AJW's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They always gave me gas as well with the band. I tried to get one down after my revision thinking it would help with calorie intake and at least some protein, but it made me so nauseated within 2 sips. -

Collagen protein is not the best quality protein. That's the main controversy. Both my nutritionist for my band, and my revision signed off on them, but from my further research, I've found that the general consensus is that the poor quality of protein found in the protein shots is the problem. I have half a dozen of them in my produce drawer that I never used. I couldn't stomach the taste of them after the first couple of weeks of using them. My mother has a band, and her nutritionist approves of them as well, and she still uses them at almost 2 years post-op. Pretty much, there are better sources of protein available. Whey and soy seem to be the most beneficial, and both have higher quality than the collagen protein. -
That's amazing Deedee ! ! ! You're going to be in onderland before you know it. . .

I love to hear your progress, you're doing excellent. Keep up the great work ! ! ! I cried when my shoes became too big. . . Especially, the red patent wedges that I couldn't wear before surgery, now they "flip flop" off my heels. But, it's worth it considering the rest of me is shrinking. . .

HI and welcome to the family. I'll be watching for updates from you, and any questions you may have ask away. I'm not well versed on the diabetes stats out there. Hopefully, someone will chime in soon ! ! ! -
I feel like I'm leaping before looking.
Tiffykins replied to donjuandelanooch's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I just wanted to pop in here and welcome you to the board. I was really apprehensive about my revision from band to sleeve, but I just couldn't see living miserably anymore. I could of just had the band removed, but realized, I would never reclaim my life and truly begin to live. I have an 11 year old son and fabulous husband that I want to enjoy life with instead of sitting on the sidelines. I look forward to hearing more of your progress, and will keep you in my thoughts through your journey. P.S. Texas is my true home. I'm from Bedford, and miss it terribly. I was born and raised there, and actually born in Dallas, grew up out west in Parker County by Weatherford. -
You look fabulous ! ! ! Congrats on your amazing progress. . .

I've found 2 groups that I think will work for me. There are several "mommy and me"/Playdate groups, but my son is 11, and we don't really do playdates anymore. I'm excited that I'll be able to get out there and meet some other people. I need to be more social, and get involved. This was the only way I knew how to get out there. A lot of the other wives here have multiple children and are a lot younger than me. I just can't relate to most of them. So, I had to find another venue to meet friends that weren't necessarily tied to the military.

Yeah, Caysen will be with us, but he'll go to sleep at some point LOL. I'm so beyond excited, and we still have a few weeks, but it's so close. Depending on when he gets in, we plan on taking a weekend trip to Destin. It's just about 15 miles from here, and stay in one of the on-the-beach hotels. Thank y'all again ! ! !

I'll definitely keep you in my thoughts as you start your journey. . . Update us when you can ! ! !

Awwwww thank y'all so very much. . . I'm so excited for him to see me. He's only seen the 2 faces I've posted. We decided that I would keep from the chin down a surprise until I pick him up at the airport. I have a 3ft wide x 6 ft long banner that I plan on holding up until he sees me, THEN, I'll drop it and run jump into his arms. He's been working out since April, and has gained over 20lbs. He left weighing 163lbs, he's up to 184, and kind of bulked up. We've both changed, and it's going to be amazing ! ! ! Thank y'all again for all the compliments. Y'all are the best in the entire world.

Tiffykins replied to dange25's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad to hear you are doing well, and hopefully the gas pain is relieved soon. . . Keep on sipping, I'm over 2 months out and I still have trouble getting in all my water. It does get so much better everyday ! ! !
