    Friday Weigh Ins

************************ FRIDAY WEIGH IN 1st May 2009 *********************** Yay! It's May! Welcome to this week's weigh in! If you want to have your BMI recorded each week also - then let me know your height and your goal weight. You can have a first and second goal if you want - and I will add them to the spreadsheet. I weighed in this morning at 127.1kg which is great! I have finally lost 10kg in total!! 10.3kg to be exact! I was really glad as I thought I'd put on. I look forward to hearing about everyones' losses this week!! xxx
  2. Hey BigMama Don't worry until you know. Exercise tests pick up a lot of false positives and have a lot of false negatives too. They will just want to double check with a more specialised scan. Hang in there! xx

    Do you regret it?

Only been banded 4 weeks but I don't regret it. I understand the doubts but 2% of people can do this by themselves and keep it off. If you are sure you're not that 2% then go for it, it will add 20 yrs to your life!
  4. My Doc told me that he has done 1400 surgeries, and he had four complications. One man had undiagnosed cancer, and the three others were smokers who all crashed on the table and needed to be resucitated. The reason why is As mucus clearance from lungs is accomplished by cilia, which are hair like projections lining inside of, the lungs constantly move dirt, bacteria up into the throat. Smoking paralyzes cilia so no more clearance and lungs become clogged with thick secretions of mucus ,bacteria and dead cells with infection is more likely to occur. Also, Inhaling nicotine causes release of adrenaline, which is known to increase heart rate; blood pressure and this in turn will increase the oxygen demand of the heart. However, smoking reduces the oxygen available to tissues so will result in the heart not having enough oxygen and possibly a heart attack occuring. Smoking also induces liver enzymes that metabolize drugs used for induction and maintenance of anesthesia making action and duration of these drugs less predictable. Emergence from anaesthesia is usually not smooth, breath holding, laryngeal spasm, bronchospasm, hypoventilation and hypoxia can occurpostoperative pulmonary complications including atelectasis, chest infection or pneumonia is common. The incidence of these complications is increased 5 folds in smokers compared to non-smokers. Wound infection a study comparing risk of respiratory complications and wound infection in patients undergoing ambulatory surgery in smokers versus non smokers concluded an increased risk in smokers. Hope this helps.

    Is this normal?

When they pump your tummy up with gas during the surgery so they can see more clearly, some of it is left in there after they have finished. Because we are upright most of the time, all the gas rises to the top - and sits right under our diaphram - the big muscle which goes up and down when we breath in so that our lungs inflate etc. This will hurt until the gas dissipates which can be up to a week or so depending on how much you had left! Just take it easy - move around a lot, and remember, someone's been prodding around inside you for an hour, you are not doing to feel great for a wee while. I am 3.5wks post op and I feel 90%, I still wouldn't do any abdominal exercises though!! Here is the picture of the diaphram:

    April 30, Pre-Op struggle...

Hey 1980. Hang in there. The Pre-op is hard, no denying that. I know you are doing the best that you can, but try really hard not to cheat as it makes it harder to stick to it. After 5 days on the diet you go into Ketosis which suppresses appetite - and if you cheat you are back to day 1 again. In saying that, its hard work and most people cheat, so don't beat yourself up now! I would not personally recommend sticking to liquid only - as it will make it harder to stay on track - for me, I'd just stick to the diet as they prescribed it - to the letter. And KEEP POSTING!! We are your support group and are here to support you!! xxx
  11. Hey guys thanks for the support. I realised tonight that although I can eat anything I want - the sizes are so very small in comparrison to what I used to eat. Today I had 2/3 of a chicken breast and a yoghurt and then went out to dinner and had 1/2 a peice of battered fish and about 6 chips and a 1/3 of a piece of choc cake (was my bro's birthday) and I am SO UNBELIEVEABLY FULL i want to pop and I feel disgusting. Where as before I would have eaten 2 sandwiches today, picked at something in the fridge this afternoon, had a full meal and dinner and probably a big chunk of cake. So it is still working in some respects, I just need to put it into context of pre- and post diet rather than this week and last week perhaps. x

    Stress weight gain/not loosing

Hey Scoob, Yeah, i can eat pretty much anything I want. Last night I had a chicken drumstick and just ate it dry - was fine, muesli and fruit - fine, funny bready/pancake thing with spinach and feta, fine. Olives, fine. I have been searching on here and I found the best thread about bandster hell 3-8wks post op. You can find it in this thread that I have started about it.
  15. I am so glad that I found this thread. I too am in "bandster hell" and I am encouraged by some of the replies on here. I guess, for me, it's not about if I am losing weight, or its not about if it is a magic bullet, its just that I am anxious now that the swelling has gone down, and I feel exactly like I did pre-band. When I say I am anxious - I am not saying that it is a rational fear or emotion - I am saying that I feel scared and worried and upset that what if this isn't normal, and what if I have been through this huge experience, paid $10K + and had all these hopes for the future (and I mean 1-2yrs future - not 1mth post op) and I am starting to worry that maybe it's not going to work for me. Reading these posts of people who have been there really do help, as all I needed was a little bit of reassurance that this is normal and I will be okay and it will help me to lose weight. Perhaps this is what "A New Woman" was looking for as well. Logically we know that WLS does work - we have all looked at the 100s of amazing before & after pictures - but we just need to know that despite how scared we feel at the moment as the hunger has returned, that we can and WILL be one of those people too... So thanks for the reassurance that you guys have given. Hang in there everyone - and those waiting for fills and who are in Bandster Hell at the moment, please come back and tell us how you feel after your fill. xx P.S In the literature that my doc provided me with it says "your hunger will return, but do not worry, you have not had a fill yet" it also says that "anger is a common emotion post surgery - as it is often anxiety over a fear of failing once again - manifesting itself as anger". Hang in there xxx

    Beer?

I am 3.5wks post band, and I haven't attempted it yet. My doc said should be fine - the only issue is the bubbles which fill the pouch so you may only be able to do sips at a time rather than knock back a cold one in a hurry. He said sip a pint over 30mins you will be fine. In saying that this guy at my friends work who was banded - he drinks 3 diet cokes a day (and has lost 40kg!) so sounds like it varies.

    First fills

I'm gonna ring ahead and see if I need to make sure I don't need to eat etc beforehand. I am not sure if it's a fill appointment or just a followup but I am gagging for a fill - I can eat WHATEVER I want and I get hungry. I hate it so much. I am sure I am putting on weight now and I am getting really sad!!
  23. I dunno what this is?!!! It didn't start until about 1 and a half weeks post op - and my arms and legs are so itchy! It comes and goes but when I start scratching it gets worse. No bumps or bites... am trying to narrow it down to why this could be happening and I have only come up with - Surgery related - Change in diet - Change in moisturiser/body wash (but have only just started using biooil all over and its just my arms and legs, not anywhere else that is itchy) - ???? Anyone else having this problem? Also, I have NEVER had a problem getting to sleep and now I do. Used to drop off within 5 mins, now it takes me hours. Anyone else???

    2 week update

I am three weeks post op tomorrow and feeling a bit disheartened, I weigh in again on Friday but I sneaked a weigh and it seems as though I have put on a kg. Makes me feel anxious and worried. The hunger has come back and I also need to acknowledge that I have been making not fantastic food choices. I have been sticking with the right consistency and portion sizes but I have been making unwise choices thinking that because the portion was small it wouldn't all add up. Makes me scared that I have done all this and now I am stupidly thinking it was going to be easier. I am just having a bit of a freak out, logically though I know that it must work and I can make wise choices and that it will be much easier after my next fill when I am not hungry any more. Just need the strength to undo this damage and I NEED TO FEEL LIKE THIS CAN HAPPEN!!!!! I have been back to the gym this week, monday and today - which is great and good for the mood too. I am sure that this weight is really from last week of my time off (week 2 postop) where I was depressed and sitting on my butt.... Hard to admit to this on here, but you cannot change what you don't acknowlege!
