  1. I got off my Metformin and Glipizide almost immediately after surgery, although thry gave me a few shots of insulin in the hospital. My endocrinologist told me that I don't need to take Metformin unlessmy sugar reaches 150. So far, so good! No diabetes meds for a few days now! I can't remember the last time my fasting sugar was in the 120's. I know that's still a bit high, but it's so much better than where I was!

  2. What great ideas. I will try some. Now that I'm back at work I can't do my morning egg. I hate reheated eggs.

I'm so jealous when I see others have vegetables and fruit so early on. I have to wait until phase 4 which is quite a few weeks away.

I can't eat vegetables until my 2nd month or fruits until my 3rd month. As for eggs, I'm still on purees, but I am able to puree a hard-boiled egg with a bit of low-fat mayo. It's like a very smooth egg salad.

  3. I love chia seeds. I can't quite describe the taste...maybe a mild nutty taste? Not sure. I imagine that I will have to wait to eat them again for some time after surgery (VSG for me) as they are very tiny and will absorb liquid. I don't even want to imagine getting those stuck in a healing stomach. I hope to add them to shakes when I start my liquid diet in December.

Yeah, they do have a bit of a slight nutty taste. I started adding them to my pre-op shakes and then a friend of a friend said she couldn't have seeds on her pre-op, so I asked my coordinator and it was discouraged. I'm going to miss them for awhile.

  4. Are they good for you? I'm almost 5 months out from gastric.

    Any good recipes for them?

    Thanks!

Just be careful and make sure you are cleared to have seeds. They absorb Water and bulk up. I love them in my shakes, but I stopped using them for my pre-op liquid diet and I know I'll have to wait for awhile after.

  5. I really wanted to be there but I'm going to pass on today. I'm 5 days post op. Doing really well. Recuperating at my girlfriends house in north babylon. I'm hoping we can all meet up sooner than later. Can we shoot for the week between Christmas and new years?

Hi Jack, I'm glad to hear you are doing well! Perhaps I will make it to the next meet-up and we'll all be post-op.

  6. I'm scheduled for next Friday, 12/23, but I didn't get cleared by my primary on Friday, as planned. During pre-op testing my A1C was over 10 (diabetes #) and my blood sugar was about 246, too high. I told them I had been having trouble getting my insurance to pay for my Metformin. When I got to my doctor, he called the surgeon, who was in surgery. My surgeon called back soon and said it was ok to clear me, then called back again to tell my primary to wait. Now, I have to get my blood sugar down by Wednesday, otherwise my surgery will be cancelled/ rescheduled. So, please, I could really use some positive vibes. At least I got my meds, which was a bit of an ordeal itself, and my blood sugar is now heading to lower #s.

  7. Git home last evening after three days in hospital, they did the GI test all was good and no stricture. They changed my anti sickness for stronger ones and also gave me a new anti acid tablet.

Great news is I can now tolerate pureed foods again and am no longer dehydrated.

Thank you for all the support I received.

Hi, I'm not sure if I missed something, but why were you in the hospital for 3 days? Looks like a lot of nausea...any other complications?

  9. I was hoping by some miracle that I would be able to jump through pre-op hoops to get approved for surgery quickly snd have it by the end of the summer, but it did not happen that way. I am now grateful that I had this time yo really get on track. I feel like my brain is starting to shift a bit as I've been really delving into WHY I do certain things.

One big thing I have learned with regard to my bingeing. When I am gearing up to eat a lot, I noticed that I give myself a type of permission...oh, payday...what can I eat?! That means I can get Chinese food! (Then it occurred to me...do I even WANT Chinese food?...and I really didn't!) I went through a few other not so healthy foods (like McDonalds,Taco Bell and Sonic) and made the same assessment. I didn't actually WANT to taste these foods, but something in my brain was craving them and telling me to go for it. You got PAID! You can eat ANYTHING YOU WANT! I'm wondering if it comes from a type of scarcity conversation in my head (like a deep fear that there will not be enough for me) and I think it might. I remember as a young kid, 10 or so, and having to split a food with someone...I always wanted to make sure that the portions of both people were the same, or maybe that mine was a bit larger. I still find myself thinking this way, but sonetimes I can stop the inner 10-year old).

So, last night, I made the initial choice of pizza (NY-style pizza slices) and I enjoyed my first slice...and I was full...I had the 2nd about an hour and a half later. I thought, as I drove home, "you can always get delivery later, if you want", but I actually forgot about it (last night, anyway). Sometimes I remind myself, "you can gave Chinese another day...no need to have everything today".

For a time, though, I used to do that after almost every Weight Watcher's weigh-in...I would allow myself a smorgasboard/feast and get 3 different types of food (but not necessarily eat it all). How's that for disordered eating?!

Anyway, I wanted to share that bit of awareness with you all. Anyone else have this type of awareness wash over them...like an epiphany?

I recently spent a month at our summer place doing a lot of soul searching, not just about WLS but many other aspects of my life. I've been in the program toward surgery for about 7 months and thought I would be scheduled by now. Alas, I'm not. And my time waiting has been well spent...researching, writing, exploring sites like this. I have come to realize that while I only 'thought' I was ready before, I am ready AND prepared now.

    Good luck on your journey!

Thank you! Every month that surgery is delayed is another month to prepare and learn. However, I sincerely hope my pre-op learning is over on December 23! I'm still waiting for insurance approval.

  10. I wonder how a pureed burger would be??

Contemplating a turkey pureed burger now - can't think of any way it'd be edible. I go to mushys next week. Hmm.
I'm wondering - maybe some ground turkey with a tish of thousand island dressing? could be reminiscent of a big mac?? LOL I might give it a try!
@@Christinamo7 has a recipe like that - not sure for what stage.
I do modify a recipe online for a "Big Mac Salad"

I use my ground sirloin/ground turkey breast blend, heat some up and melt cheddar on it. I put a very small amount of shredded romaine lettuce in my wee bowl, then add the meat/cheese and top it with a few drops of thousand island dressing, one green onion chopped up and one pickle chopped up and add some sesame seeds. really hits the spot

there is no reason you couldn't use all ground beef or all ground turkey depending on your personal preference. for my plan I was allowed all this after 4 weeks.

Based upon the advice above from @@LipstickLady and what is allowed by your surgeon, I plan to stay FAR away from seeds for a good few months. I'm terrified of those little suckers getting caught in the staple- line of my new pouch.

  11. Hi All,

I am just curious who the oldest sleever is on here, meaning how far out are you? How long have you had your sleeve?

Scheduled for next week and feeling anxious.... had the band 10 years ago and now on to this.

I should stop reading on here, some of the negative side effects like strictures are making me nervous.

Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

My surgeon told me strictures are quite rare. Still, I understand your fears...I'm still pre-op and sometimes think of all the possible complications, but I figure I'm already having complications from being fat and diabetic with high blood pressure, so I'm thinking the surgery is worth the risk for me.

  12. I'm a little over a year out of RNY (15 months) and already I'm dealing with nutritional deficiencies along with anemia. I take Bariatric Advantage chewable Multivitamin twice daily (all spaced out over the day), I take extra Calcium, B-12, Biotin, magnesium, zinc, omega-3, and folic acid. Basically, I'm doing everything right and eating a very balanced diet AND still I'm dealing with anemia (which is common) and my calcium, Protein, is falling fast (I get about 80 grams of Protein a day). I'm so disillusioned and upset. I've done everything correctly. My ferritin has dropped 40 points since my surgery. I'm getting my first Iron infusion (first of three!) this morning. Has anyone here or anyone you know had to have the gastric bypass reversed because of deficiencies? I'm thinking I'll need to convert almost all my Vitamins to sublingual or opt for shots. Very sad.

As part of my pre-pre-op jumping through hoops, my primary doctor sent me to a hematologist due to low Iron. I may have some type of mild Mediterranean anemia (Thalassemia) and my hematologist said I have to be careful taking iron supplements because it can cause "iron load" in my organs. I had 2 infusions (of ferratin, I believe) over the summer and my iron numbers came up. Have you seen a hematologist? It might help to really zero in on the issue.

  13. I don't like it, but I like it better than greek yogurt (BTW, I like Dannon regular or lite yogurt). Both are basically pretty gross to me.

Phase 3. No veggies or fruit yet. What can I do with this cottage cheese since I seem to tolerate it. Anything to make it more bearable?

Also, try different brands of Greek yogurt. I think Oikos has a better and less strong taste.
