    Liver Shrinking Ain't for Sissies

I've been ready to beat my head against the wall for days now, trying to maintain any semblance of willpower to stay on a 30g/day of carb diet. They say stress is the divided state of mind when your good sense overrides the overwhelming urge to choke the living crap out of someone who richly deserves it. Yeah, I feel like that right now. I want to grab up the dietician and scream, "Look, Skinny Minnie! If I had this much willpower, I wouldn't be having lap band surgery, now would I?" I saw the dietician on October 17, a little less than a month ago. I do great all week, staying on the 30g a day or less. Then the weekend comes. My DH and brother come barrelling through the door on Thursday night with the full intention of relaxing and making pigs of themselves with every kind of contraband snack food you can imagine. Now, my DH is thin. My brother Dante is as overweight as I am, I think. Believe it or not, they both have a job at the same factory. Just goes to show what a difference genetics can make. Anyway, after today, maybe things can be different. My DH has helped me install a locking hasp on the outside pantry and a bike lock on the outside refrigerator. I've removed all the contraband shelf stable foods to the locked pantry. All that's left in the kitchen pantry are foods I can have or things I won't eat willingly. Later I will do the same with the kitchen refrigerator, removing all those perishable things I'm not supposed to have. I've made a list of those things I can have if I'm to shrink my liver successfully. No, I don't have to be this meticulous right now. According to the dietician, the 30g/day becomes important 7-10 days before surgery, then I'll be on a liquid diet 2 days before surgery. (Lovely. Right around the holidays? Am I nuts?) Still, I'm going to give it the best try I can. I want this liver the size of a pea, if I can.

    Pre-Op Diet

Thanks, Hersheybar. Makes me feel better to know someone understands. DH insisted on going with me to buy the locking hasp for the pantry, and even figured out a way to use an old bike lock we had laying around to lock the spare fridge. (Sigh of relief) I feel so much better knowing the evil carbs are locked out of reach. However, I didn't want to listen to DH gripe so I'll wait until tomorrow to go buy the shakes, broth, Jello, yogurt, and other items. You'd think he had to starve to listen to him fuss, all because he's got to store his Cookies under lock and key. (Rubbing thumb and forefinger together to simulate playing world's smallest violin.)

    Pre-Op Diet

Yes, it's a modified Atkins. However, understanding the restrictions and being able to live them by myself has proven difficult. None of the other members of my household are willing to give up that many carbs. Because they want the cakes, chips, rice, and potatoes I'm not supposed to have, they're sabotaging my chances despite their promises to "provide support in every way possible." I finally became desperate as of yesterday when my husband came home sick from work and my first thoughts were, "Oh, darn! How will he sabotage my diet now?" (He didn't.) We talked and worked out a compromise that might actually have an effect. Soon as I get off work, I'm going to rearrange the pantries so that the one outside can be locked. All the "contraband" they want can be stored out there, out of my sight and reach with a lock and key. I'll even install a lock on the spare refrigerator and put any perishable contraband out there. I'll put all the things I can have or don't tempt me here in the convenient pantry and fridge in the kitchen. I've already weaned myself off caffeine, sodas, and most breads. Doggone it, I've sacrificed too much this year to give up now. If it takes drastic measures like locked pantries, then that's what it takes.

    waiting for approval

Hi Merrid, I'm at the same place you are, waiting for the final approval. I'm having a band because that's all my insurance will pay for too. I'm taking reams of notes right now about the liquid pre-op diet, what to pack for the surgery itself, and questions for the doc like, "Will I need to bring my CPAP machine to the hospital?" Lena

    Pre-Op Diet

I think I'm going to fail on this diet thing. The dietician put me on a 20 carb a day max diet, and I fail every weekend to stay on it. Saturday and Sunday when my family is home, they're eating "normal" foods and it's right there in front of me. So, I grab. I'm terrified to step on the scales at the doctor's office next week. I don't think I've lost a pound. In fact, I may have gained. How will I lose weight through the holidays? Was I insane to try hard-core dieting at this time of year? Lena
  7. I'd love to go to a conference, but I'll wait for one closer. Also, more warning would be a good thing. In these hard economic times, spending several hundred dollars or more requires saving up. Other conferences give up to a year or more notice so if one appears on the schedule that is conveniently --or enticingly-- placed, attendees can start putting money aside.

    Blog Number Two

I have a blog I dedicated to my journey toward the weight loss surgery on blogspot called Fat Frog Diary but this one will no doubt be more honest, in a weird sort of way. That's the problem with my job as a published author. My fans expect me to be witty and confident all the time. Never mind that I'm human and have fears, pains, and illnesses. Somehow, Lena Austin the writer must transcend all that. The image I chose for my profile is what I looked like when I was near my goal weight when I was in my early 30's. I want to look similar to that again, even if my hair is now short and graying. Miss Clairol and I have been old friends, so that can be solved. :cursing: Where am I in this journey? Somewhere between the circus poodle still jumping through hoops (Arf!) and the dysfunctional machine laying on the gurney for repairs. I saw the shrink yesterday. Nice woman. That marks the end of my visiting specialists. My appointment with the surgeon for a group session is next week. If I understand the process (doubtful) then they'll submit the packet detailing how my weight affects my health for final approval from my insurance. This will be the third approval from the insurance. I have visions of some bean counter at the insurance office typing up a fax saying, "Yes, I'm sure!! Geez, you're worse than my computer!" Just like HysterSisters, everyone tells me the waiting is the worst part. I don't think it's the waiting so much as the long time span from decision to doing it. This is especially true since I learned how few daily carbs I was allowed, and that I needed to start that diet immediately. The fact that it would be a minimum of three months before I saw the inside of the hospital made no sense to me. I want to grab someone by the collar and say, "Look! I have family members who do not need to reduce their livers and they are complaining bitterly over the sudden lack of breads, rices, and pastas they need for their physically demanding lives. Unless you're willing to contribute to my budget so I can cook two meals for dinner, we have a conflict." Take this month, November. Please, take this month, and while you're at it take December too. You see, not only do I have the diet minefield of the holidays, but also a slew of family birthdays. All of these family members want cake and ice cream for their celebrations. (sigh) Try telling your mother "No" when she asks you to make use of that cake decorating class you took to create her the spectacular birthday cake she rarely gets because she was unlucky enough to be born on Christmas Eve. I'm doomed.

    Low Carb Potato Substitute

I discovered sauteed turnips on my own after a culinary mistake turned into a happy occasion. Love the turnips! They also seem to pick up a little of the flavor of the fat they're cooked in, so bacon grease is just divine. What's more, my family can turn their noses up at the turnips and leave me with the delicious pan full all to myself. I divide it up into 1/2 cup servings and have them for lunches or as sides. They reheat in the microwave very well.
  13. Pardon the newbie question, but what is the Designer Whey for? Lena:confused:

    Hi from Florida

Whoops. (Brainless newbie moment) I've not been banded yet. My doctors are Drs. Cywes and Baptista at the Jacksonville Weight Loss Center. I've made my appointments with the nutritionist, fitness trainer, labs for bloodwork, imaging center for x-ray and EKG, and my appointment with the shrink is next month. I'm not sure what the Introduction thing wants me to say about websites and such. I started a blog called the Fat Frog Diary (http://fatfrogdiary.blogspot.com) Be warned. I don't censor my language and I can get rather pithy. What can I say? I'm a professional writer. Polite and bland words were expunged from my vocabulary by my editors years ago. I started the blog way back in May when I decided to go for lap-band surgery. I'm pleased to say that my PCP was with me all the way from the moment I told her I wanted to do this, bless her. Well, I think I'll toddle off to the Pre-op forum now.
  15. A friend recommended this site, and I'm still feeling my way around. Thought I'd say Hi. I'm at the point where they're poking, prodding, scoping, and shrinking my head. (grin) Maybe they'll let me know when I'll have surgery next month. (sigh) Lena
  16. Excuse me, but I'm very new to lapbandtalk and don't know what I'm doing yet.

The process is long and occasionally very frustrating, at least for me. The first meeting is a consutation with Dana, a bandster herself. I advise bringing any paperwork you have and be prepared to fill out a few papers for Dana. They will explain what you need. Dana herself is a very linear personality. She prefers that you let her get through her lecture, even though you may have already heard the same information before. Just bear with her. She'll answer questions afterwards, but refuses to deviate from the "need to know list" of information she's willing to give out at that time. Basically, the most important thing you'll do is fill out the papers so your insurance can be contacted. My insurance is Tricare, and it took about 3 weeks and a couple days for Dana to call me back so we could schedule the next step-- the first visit with the doc.

The first visit with the doc was very, very tedious. They warn you it will take several hours, and they are not exaggerating one bit. Bring a book or an amusement that can last several hours, because there will be periods of waiting and waiting, and did I mention waiting? You'll talk to a lovely young lady named Sandra and the PA named Janet. Both of them are delightful and much more informative. They even give you their emails so you can contact them at leisure. Finally, when you're just about ready to start shredding things, the doc will arrive. Dr. Baptista was who I saw. He's a dapper brown fellow with soulful whiskey colored eyes. He speaks with an accent, so listen very carefully.

Before you leave, they'll set up your meeting with the nutritionist and the personal trainer. However, you have to contact the shrink, imaging center, and labs yourself. (This is the stage I'm at.) The shrink has a very quirky phone system. Be patient. You will eventually get through. The lab and imaging center are your choice and can be local to you there in Melbourne. Things move fairly quickly from this point, so don't be too shocked when you find yourself running to the appointments like a nut case for the next 3-4 weeks. As soon as you've made the appointment with the shrink (this will be the last thing, since they're booked out so far) you can call and schedule you're fourth visit.

I'm told the 4th visit will be another FYI group session. At this point, your packet will be submitted to your insurance for final approval for surgery. When you are scheduled depends on how fast the insurance gets back to them with approval. Most take less than a month, I'm told. At that time, you'll get called for the pre-op appointment scheduling.

From that point, the schedule moves to supersonic speed. The law allows only ten days from your pre-op appointment to the day you are operated upon, so they hustle you through the last part at lightning speed.

That's all I know right now. Any questions?

    Lena

    Anyone banded in Jacksonville???

Okay, cool. Their office is pretty easy to find. I've already had the meeting etc. I'm at the getting poked, prodded, lectured, and head-shrinking part. (grin) If I say anything more about the doc's, I'd much prefer to take this conversation private. BMI 45.9
