I had my mini-gastric bypass this past Friday. I didn’t begin having issues with the liquid diet or feeling hungry at the hospital until I got to my mom’s house yesterday and smelled her cooking (Pavlov’s dog conditioned response, if you know what I mean lol), but I recognized it immediately for what it was & quickly redirected my focus by going outside for a walk & some fresh air.
Right now they are cooking, so I went outside to introduce myself to their German shepherd & gave her a treat. Now I went to a different part of the house where I can’t smell the food being cooked.

@TrippingDaisy18 I understand your grip wholeheartedly. I remember those early stages if you're in the liquid stage ensure to make you some great bone broth as you enjoy family, I made my own bone broth out of different beef cuts and fresh veggies it was delicious. I sipped on as much liquid broth as I wanted it was lovely. I dislike being hungry. I hate that you can't eat the delicious food at this time but the reward is so great!

Sorry you had such a jerk of a social worker, make sure you tell your doctor so they don't send people to him anymore. And you don't ever have to go back to him even if you have an appointment scheduled and even if your doctor recommended him, you can cancel that appointment and tell your doctor you don't want to see that social worker again. The doctors, and that social worker, work for you. You are paying them. I am having my surgery on Wednesday this week, I'm very excited.

I decided to buy a food scale and a Bariatric Food/Activity Diary from Amazon. I also bought some very small mason jars earlier this year. I bought a silicon ice cube tray to make protein cubes with. I also found a 64oz stainless steel water jug, with a screw on cap, at Walmart for $16. I will fill it every day, and work my way through it. Other than that, I'm good to go, I think!
My surgery is tomorrow! I'm praying for my surgery to go smoothly. <3

My surgeon asked if I eat a lot of sweets to help decide between sleeve and Bypass. He says Bypass works better for patients who crave and eat a lot of sweets. Ironically I did not until AFTER my sleeve. Don’t let this scare you though. My entire experience with the sleeve was not typical. I am much happier with my revision to SADI. I think the sleeve is perfectly fine for a small majority but many of us need more metabolic changes than what the sleeve produces. Any surgery that messes with the intestines is more aggressive and comes with more risks but it also gave me a better shot at real weight loss. Just be sure you are mentally ready to make yourself a priority to be successful with this because after bypass it’s harder to do a revision for weight gain. Not all surgeons do them and risks go up. I mention this because you are going overseas. In the states they do a psyc eval and try to make sure we are prepared but I’m not sure if they do so overseas. That being said my psyc eval was just about worthless 🤦‍♀️

My tips are, don't buy too much food just yet, you'll find that most of it will expire or go bad before you finish it all
As for items, I recommend a wedge pillow, when I came out, I wasn't able to lay down so being propped up help me
Loose tunic, even my loosest of shirt felt uncomfortable, a dress/muumuu was my go to for the first 2 weeks
Lip balm, since you can't drink too much your lips will dry out, lip balm will help with the feeling of cracked lips

I hope this helps, you got this!

there's just regular gastric bypass (RNY) and mini gastric bypass (the latter done mostly in Europe - I don't really hear about it in the US). I don't know of any surgery that is done specifically for people who eat sweets - but I had my surgery 10 years ago, so maybe things have changed (??)

Hello! 🌸 Planning balanced meals, starting slowly with portion management, and establishing a regular light exercise regimen—such as walking or mild workouts—were some of the most beneficial pre-operative strategies I discovered. When you combine it with keeping a goal book, monitoring your progress, and forming a network of friends who will support you,

Hi! Newbie here! My insurance will not cover my gastric bypass, so I am traveling outside of the US, overseas where I have family, to have the procedure.
All the surgeon requires is pre-op bloodwork and for me to lose some weight prior to the surgery. I have started meeting with a therapist and she, along with a couple of friends that are post-op, suggested I find a support group to help with prepping for this major life change. I expressed some concern to my current PCP about not being fully prepared & he said typically all of the hoops you have to jump through here in the US are put in place by insurance companies. No doubt there is some truth to that, but it isn’t entirely true.
I understand this surgery isn’t going to be a quick/easy fix and that I need to take steps towards healing emotionally, preparing mentally & physically, and working on portion control & movement/activities prior to surgery to ensure success.
What are some of the things, or the one thing, you did to prepare that really helped you in your journey post op?

I did super well with not paying attention to the head hunger, but in the last 3 months it's come roaring back. It's super hard to ignore sometimes. When that happens, I try to have smaller meals more often and add an extra snack. It's been a while since my surgery, and while I can't eat like I used to, I can eat larger meals now. And when the head hunger hits, I try to "fool" my brain into thinking I'm eating more when I'm actually eating the same amount but broken up into smaller portions so my brain sees me eating again and again and thinks I'm eating more. It sounds weird, but for me it actually works. And I prioritize protein (some days I hit 100g of protein) because it fills me up and keeps me full longer.

A visual step I took was I bought smaller bowls and plates a few months in advance and tried to reduce down my meals. It helped me realise that my idea of portion size was totally off because I felt the need to fill the (larger) plate.
Now of course I don't even need to fill all of the smaller plate to have my meals.

Meat and cheese (and veg and salad) are my staples here too when I'm out and about. Lots of good advice and suggestions here already. Salad is too fiddly to eat while driving but carrot, cucumber, celery, green or red pepper sticks might be OK, with dressing or a dip if you like? Personally not a big fan of highly processed food any more (it made me obese) so a bar would be a last resort for me. Nothing wrong with them once in a while though and can be handy if your options for protein are limited that particular day!

After a year, it will be on special occasions. I am not a big alcohol drinker to begin with, so it is not too difficult for me. I take pride in not drinking. I live my life how I want to, but even communion at Church, I take the grape juice instead of the wine. But you do you, just keep in mind that it could become a transfer addiction if not being aware of your drinking. Wishing you luck.
