NovelTee reacted to Arabesque in What does "full" feel like to you?
You may not feel full or feel full accurately for a while. You have to wait for your tummy & the nerves that were cut to be healed (around 8 weeks). It’s why sticking to the portions you were given vey important at this time & also the eat slowly. It takes at least 20 minutes for the full signal to get through (this is everyone not just us) so if you eat quickly you will have eaten way too much by the time the signal gets through.
You may feel some pressure or at worst the foamies if you eat too much now. Later you may develop the runny nose, hiccup, etc. signals. It will be a little while until you feel your restriction which is really the stop, stop, too much warning.
I only feel pressure if I’m full or something is sitting too heavily in my tummy. I also ask myself if I need the next bite or just want it because we should stop before we feel full. I also discovered my full signal can be really slow, up to an hour, so I usually take 30-45 mins to eat.

I had my first doctor's appointment. I AM IN THE 260'S!!!! I haven't been this small in over 6 years. I'm down 13 lbs since surgery 2.5 weeks ago and 28 lbs since January. She said she fully expects me to reach my goal of 180 within the year
    I'm so freaking happy

UGH - Just UGH - I'm an idiot. I KNOW what to do.... but can't seem to get back into the game. Up almost 15lbs from my lowest and can't seem to get it back under control. A couple of weeks ago, I put some slacks away because they no longer fit comfortably. It just about made me sick to toss my "goal pants" on a shelf. As I type this, I'm thinking I need to go back to where I started. Put those bad boys back in the closet, try them on weekly (like I used to) until they fit right again. STOP wearing the comfortable stretchy leggings that I wore when I was losing weight... It's so easy to get comfortable at this point.
I guess this is really just a rant (and a warning): don't get comfortable. Pay attention and BEFORE things get out of control, get back on track. It's much easier to lose 5 than 15. I tend to be a social eater/drinker vs. emotional so I know that I need to make sure I have the right (raw veggies and fruit) foods available when in social gatherings instead of the "standard" snack foods (charcuterie boards are my absolute downfall). Knowing I will have an adult beverage, making sure I'm also drinking a Water in between to at least slow myself down.... Putting on those ill-fitting shorts at home to remind myself NOT to over indulge. Make small changes every week instead of trying to go all-in with a "pouch reset" (which I fail miserably at every time I try). Take pictures and compare. Anything it takes to remind yourself of WHY you did this to begin with. TRACK - Whew, I can't say that enough... TRACK. My failure to track is why I am where I am. When I see what's going in, it's a real eye-opener.

All of the reasons above plus the heightened risk of lung collapse due to the surgery. I found that when my cpap readings fell short, it was mostly due to my mask not being tight enough for a proper seal. The stronger my oxygen levels, the better I started sleeping. Keeping fingers crossed for you!!

This is very true of Kaiser. Your pannus has to hang down pass the mons area. Kaiser did cover my panniculectomy but I upgraded to the Tummy Tuck ($5500 in San Diego) so because some of it was covered I got half off. I'm now two days postop. Hope this helps.

I think it’s about ensuring your blood is well oxygenated & also poor breathing and sleep affects your heart & blood pressure. But most importantly, sleep apnea puts you at higher risk with anaesthesia which slows your already compromised breathing resulting in complications during & immediately after surgery.
Certainly worth a conversation with your surgeon & maybe your respiratory doctor as well.

I’m still struggling with that. I don’t do well with taking pills and taking them while drinking out of a medicine cup is even more of a challenge. Yesterday I was able to drink about 12oz of water throughout the day and I added a Gatorade zero pouch for some electrolytes, and I was able to keep that all down

I'm so happy to find this thread, because I've been anticipating these questions and am so nervous about them. My immediate family and a couple of close friends know, but I don't intend to share beyond that. Currently, my plan is to simply say that I've been addressing some health challenges and leave it at that.

I was given the 1/4 - 1/3 of a cup from purée advice too (slowly increasing to a cup by 6 months). If that’s yoghurt it would be about 2-3ozs. But I agree with the others - contact your team to ask. We have different needs & surgeons & dieticians have different requirements.
Remember to eat slowly. Wait a couple of minutes between bites. I used to dip my teaspoon into my purées. No spoonfuls. Try not to eat until you feel full. Those signals are still not functioning accurately because your nerves were cut. (Takes about 8 weeks to be fully healed.)
    All the best.

What surgery did you have and how long ago OP? It would help us to advise you if you could provide a little more detail. 👍
I had a sleeve, and in the puree phase (2-4 weeks post op) I was eating WAY less than 100 grams/3.5oz per meal. Probably more like 2oz? But I was getting Protein in in other ways (shakes).

Most programs will tell you to stick with 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup portions for the first month or two. There is a lot of swelling internally and a lot of nerves are cut that communicate fullness so it is hard for us to discern whether we are full or not. I found this portion varied per food personally though. I have always been able to eat a bigger portion of yogurt, for instance, than a pureed meat. Density seems to matter to my stomach.
You could always call your surgeon's office to find out their recommendations. But if you don't want to, I'd stick to the 1/4 to 1/3 cup range. I noticed my portions changed at around 2 months out. I can eat closer to 1/2 cup portions now. I'm assuming that is because all the swelling finally went down and there is more space now.

NovelTee reacted to ChunkCat in 6 Months post surgery, minimal to no weight loss
I'm so sorry you are experiencing this!! This isn't a you problem!! If you aren't losing sufficient weight you are either being given poor advice from your nutrition team, poor medical support from your surgeon, or it is possible your body is under significant stress for whatever reason and isn't losing weight. There are rare cases when someone with a sleeve doesn't respond but often those are people who have low starting weights. If they had a high starting weight and don't respond to the sleeve surgery, these people generally end up revised to bypass or a DS/SADI, and then lose weight, but again, that should be a convo being initiated by your surgeon as a future possibility if food modification and medications don't work.
Some people take GLP-1 meds to help jumpstart their weight loss if the surgery hasn't triggered it, but again, at the 6 month mark this should be something the surgeon initiates conversation about. You shouldn't be living in fear of your appointments with them. If you aren't feeling supported you might consider getting a second opinion from another bariatric surgeon in the area not affiliated with this practice. I strongly believe in second opinions when talking things like surgery... It may sound like I'm being harsh on your team, but lets be clear. They made a nice chunk of money off of your surgery. You deserve good aftercare!!
Some surgeons, like my own, believe that the best way to lose weight in the first 6 months to a year after surgery is through being in ketosis. This involves a good Protein intake (60-80 grams with the sleeve) and carbs below 50 total carbs or 30 grams net carbs. You can get pee strips to test if you are in ketosis. Once in ketosis you should go through regular periods when you lose some weight, followed by periods where you lose none as your body stabilizes from the previous loss and recalibrates. If this doesn't happen, I'd definitely be communicating with the surgeon about it! What dietary advice did your team give you?
Hydration is important for weight loss. If you aren't able to eat enough calories or drink enough Water your body will go into starvation mode like @summerseeker mentioned. This is a huge stressor to the body!! And huge stress will cause weight loss to stop. sleep is also crucial to weight loss, often more important than exercise. If you aren't getting regular sleep for enough hours per night, this can stall your weight loss. Physical activity of some kind is important, but it accounts for less weight loss than proper nutrition and sleep. And if you are under calories and under hydrated exercise will just further stress out your body.

I almost feel guilty, but I am actually feeling very well, I have not had any bad pain at all, my highest number was a 3. I have been able to get all of my fluids in, my Protein and my medications/supplements. I was actually wondering if the doctor had really done the surgery. 😁
At this point I'm wondering why I waited so long to do this.

I'm with you there! I'm currently day 8 post-op, and was also on an all liquid diet two weeks before surgery too. Been three weeks since I've had solid food of any kind and I want real food so badly. Thankfully I meet with my surgeon soon, hopefully he approves me to transition to soft foods.
