  1. Hi!

I had my surgery on Sept. 23rd and I also have gas problems. My doctor told me that everyone is different and it is normal to have gas. I have extreme shoulder pain and that is from gas. I told the doctor about the pain and he again said that everyone is different and it will go away. So I am waiting. In the meantime, what helps me is to drink a lot of Water and I can take Tylenol for the pain.

  2. Hi!!

The first two days were difficult. I am not going to lie, it was painful for me. Painful in the sense of just having surgery, I think that is normal. Although everyone's pain tolerance is different. The worst part was not being able to drink for so long after surgery so be prepared for that. Then my first drink, hours later, was the yucky, yucky barium. Now just a week later I am all most back to normal. I notice that I get tired easily so don't push yourself. I also have horrible gas that rises into my shoulder. It is extremely uncomfortable but it passes. I am just trying to be positive overall, looking down the road to be healthy is very exciting!! I have already lost 13 pounds!

As far as straining the soups...it is very easy. I have used both a metal strainer that looks like a net for Soups with smaller bits. The soups like minestrone and potatoe or broccoli I have used just a regular small colander/strainer. It has been best for me to first heat the Soup then drain it. A friend of mine made me homemade potatoe Soup that was delicious and she blended the soup!

    I hope that helps!!

  3. Hi there!

I had my surgery last week on the 23rd. It has been difficult but I feel in my heart that I have made the right decision. I am already down 13 pounds and that is very rewarding. The best liquid I have found is Carnation Instant Breakfast. I am not a milk drinker, have never liked milk but this is actually really good. My nutritionist recommeded it...good Protein. After surgery the docs want you to get a good amount of Protein. The nice thing is they come in different flavors and I really like the chocolate. I mix it and then I blend it with ice and I really enjoy it and it really fills me up!

But overall I live on Soups right now. Try different Soups daily and you will soon find some that you really like. I am currently on broths or creamed soups as long as they are strained. I really like the creamy potatoe and broccoli cheese. At my large grocery store they have fresh soups made and they are really good.

I know how you feel!!! Best wishes..

  4. Hello All! I am very happy to be a part of this group. So far I have gained so much information!! I am very thankful.

I had my surgery on Sept. 23rd. I started my journey weighing exactly 300lbs. As of today I weigh 287 so I am excited to be down 13 pounds already. (but I have not been able to figure out how to make my ticker work) I had a rough go on my first day. I was extremely sore, I have many incisions (5) and the barium drink was HORRIBLE! But I am very thankful I stuck it out and have been positive and can't wait for my new healthy life. My goal is to all around be healthier. I have two teenagers that I want to ride rollacoasters with! I want to not have to ask for a seat belt extender when I ride in the airplane. I take so much medicine that I want to get rid of. I want to loose my sleep machine!! I could go on and on....

    Thanks for listening!!

  5. I also was taking the Effexor XR 250mg (large red capsule). My surgeon suggested that I have it a smaller size and he asked me to contact my primary care physician. He first put me on two Effexor pills to try and I could not get them down. They were horrible and burnt my tounge so my doc. then switched me to an Effexor capsule that are a lot smaller than my original pill. They are like the size of a baby aspirin. I just had my surgery on 9/23 and I started taking my Effexor the very next day. So far no problems!! Thank goodness. I take a lot of medication because I have a seizure disorder and there was great concern that I would need to smash them into applesauce but I have not had to do it! It just takes me alot longer to get all my medication down. I used to fill my hand and swallow them no problem. Now I take them one at a time and even take a break if needed and then go back to taking the rest.

    Best Wishes!

  6. Hello! I had my surgery on Sept. 23rd and overall I am doing fine besides this horrible cough!! I've been told that sometimes when you are intibated/ventilated? it causes the throat to be sore but I never thought I would cough this much. I can't stop!! Then after much coughing it starts to hurt my stomach because it is still sore.

Also what about gas pains in your shoulder? Only on my left side I am having serious pains. From my shoulder to my waist, mainly the shoulder. When should I expect this to go away?

By the way....I have never smoked!!

    Thanks,

    Anjie

  7. I really agree with you all! My surgery is just in a few days...Sept. 23

I am super excited but also really nervous. I can't stop thinking about it, almost like an obsession. Then I wonder if I am doing everything correctly! I wonder about the Protein Shakes and how much I should really be drinking. My doc. recommends 2-3 Protein shakes but I have a hard time getting down one!! So I totally know what you mean, I feel the same way. We should all try to stay in touch for encouragement!!!

  8. Hi there,

I have surgery scheduled for Sept 23, 2008. So Juku, I was hoping since we have a similar surgery time we could stay in touch and push each other and share ideas, etc. I am 36. I live in Northern California with my husband and two children, 15 and 17! They keep my hands full. I am really looking forward to surgery but nervous also. Are you able to request me as a friend because I can't seem to figure that out yet?? Or anyone who would like to share info! I am still trying to figure my way around the web site. Tell me about yourself and hopefully we can stay in touch!!

And SassyMomma- great news, thank you for giving us incentive! Good for you!
