I went in for my surgery yesterday at 12:45. Waking up was a bear. I was in a lot of pain for a very short time and they quickly got it under control. I slept pretty good last night.
Getting my fluids in is taking some getting used to. They want me to do 2 oz every 15 minutes. I tried to introduce Boost and my stomach told me that wasn't hopping today. Lol
Overall, I feel surprisingly well for having surgery. I asked for an abdominal binder, and it has helped me tremendously.
    Happy Healing!

Thank you. The dry mouth thing is already a problem since this liquid diet.

I took a robe, slippers, and a book.
I never used the slippers because the socks with traction the hospital provided were more comfortable.
I tried reading when I realized I was reading the same page over and over. I don't know if it was the anesthesia or what but I just could not absorb anything. Maybe it was the bed from hell which was a special bed they rented for me that was slightly less comfortable than a cement slab. I spent more time sleeping in the comfortable chair in the room.
The robe was useful, especially on walks. Last thing other patients needed to see was... well... you know.
Everything else was provided by the hospital.
    Good luck,
    Tek

pain is all across the board, but I would say based on hanging out on this site for the last eight years that most people have little to no pain with these surgeries. I didn't have pain and wondered if they even did the surgery! The only thing I had which could be considered painful (other than some minor "gas pain" once I got home) was that it was a challenge to change positions for a few days. If I was just lying there, or sitting there, or standing there - no pain. But if I was transitioning from one to the other, like from lying down to sitting, my abs felt like I'd done about 1000 crunches.
they'll send you home with pain pills, so if you're one of the folks who experiences pain after the surgery, you'll have those to keep on top of it.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to buy me a cozy pair of sweatpants after work. I never thought about a pillow, but it makes sense.
It has been a long process with Kaiser, let me tell you. I have been in the program well over a year. I have a super surgeon and the hospital I am going to is nice

I would say don't overpack. I was sent home the same day after my vsg, and for the rny revision, I went home the next morning, about 24 hrs after being admitted. Basically slept till my release. What I found necessary was a very loose outfit that you can slip over your head, comfortable shoes, your cell phone, necessary ID items and a small pillow for bumps in the road for your ride trip go home is really all I needed.

I hate pain... i hate needles with a passion. believe it or not not much pain after surgery. Yes moving the wrong way will hurt but you are on pain meds and you will get a script for the good stuff. I got a big bottle of liquid hydrocodone. I maybe used it twice. THe pain after surgery was the air in your chest that pain medication does nothing for. Once you get thru that pain you are golden.

Tomorrow is the day for my much anticipated gastric bypass surgery. I am packing my bag and hoping I am not forgetting anything. Kaiser sent a letter telling me to bring very little, but I want to be comfortable
Anyone have any handy tips on what to forget at home and what to bring?

I was awake a lot more than I was asleep, so I wish I had brought a book or my laptop. My phone just wasn't enough to keep me occupied for my wakeful recovery. I know a lot of people sleep but you never know if you may be the one who doesn't. With weight restraints, I would have brought a paperback book or kindle. I also would have brought a small bottle of mouthwash.

If I think of anything else, I will update. Just got home!

Edit to add what I brough and used or didn't:
cell phone bank charger (used it)
    cell phone cable (used it)
cell phone stand to read without holding the phone, I had it on my tray. (used this, obv)
    robe (didn't use)
button front pajama shirt and shorts (didn't use)
toothbrush, toothpaste, chapstick, face wipes (used all of this)
    hairbrush (used)
kept my hair in braids but it still managed to get very tangled
    small notebook and pen (used)

Like others, I wore the same clothes to and from the hospital. I wore joggers, a tshirt, a zip front hoodie, socks and slip on sneakers.

My surgery in 12/29 as well. On Friday I receieved a letter from Kaiser titled, "crisis standards of care declared by Portland hospitals." While they haven't cancelled any procedures yet, they may need to reschedule if the hospital can't accommodate me due to high numbers of patient's. Ugh, I have been in the program for 1 1/2 years and ready for my new journey!
With that being said, I am hopeful and excited. I begin my 2 week liquid diet this coming Thursday and pray I do not become too crabby. Lol.
    Best wishes

I am having gastric bypass on the 29th as well! I started my liquid diet on Thursday. It hasn't been as tough as I thought it would be, but I do a lot of self talking and keeping my eye on the goal of a healthier life. My surgery will be in Portland. Where are you located?
