Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.

Not sure if it’s too late to chime in to be helpful but I’ll give you my experience and advice. I was not given much guidance by my program about alcohol other than to avoid it for the empty calories aspect. As a Jew, wine is part of our holidays, rituals and celebrations so it’s hard to avoid. Yea, I could do juice but I don’t want to, I like wine and I’m an adult, damnit. I had a small glass at home a week or so post op and noticed that it feels a little funny when it hits my stomach but that goes away quickly and I drink a lot less than I used to. I feel it sooner, but once I stop drinking the buzzed feeling goes away sooner too. So overall for me a pro. I drink 1-3 glasses a week (still much less than I did before) and do not binge cause I don’t want to get hammered in a hurry. If you’re going to drink at an event, I’d recommend trying it at home to see how you handle it. That way if you have a problem, you’re in a safe place. I can’t speak to the dumping as although I drink sweet wine, I haven’t had an issue. I just treat it like any other liquid and don’t chug or take big sips. This way, one glass lasts a lot longer too. Another bonus in my opinion. If your program specifically forbids it, I’d recommend following that recommendation just to save the hassle of having to tell them what you did lol. And I agree that if you chose not to drink then it shouldn’t be a problem. If you need to lol like you’re drinking you can always have the bartender mix up a cranberry and water cocktail or similar mixed drink minus the alcohol. If you chose to drink, you can nurse a glass of wine for an hour or more at a time and ask the bartender to pour you a weak cocktail, should you desire you a mixed drink. Bartenders are like hairdressers, they’re good at keeping secrets 😉

    Too much protein

That’s weird. I just had my 6 week follow up with my dietician and she said min protein is 60g, but she said 90-100g was great. Maybe it’s because I’m also recovering from ACL replacement, but when I said I could get another 20-30 grams in with an extra protein shake a day, she seemed excited. Maybe ask your doctor and see if he/she has an opinion on protein intake and WLS specifically. Or maybe it’s a calories thing. Protein is great but also has calories.

    Clothes?

There’s a place to give stuff away to other WLS patients? I’d love this. As I go down in sizes, I don’t want to have to buy several new wardrobes or clothes I’ll only wear once so finding a place to “trade” clothing would be great. What is that place?

What do you do when you get sick?

Call it placebo effect- I do love that this exists and take full advantage of it every chance I get- but I (and my best friend too since we seem to share the same gi ailments, although, for different reasons) drink a small can of ginger ale for an upset stomach. Sometimes it’s not just about nausea, sometimes it’s being empty too long, waking up, hormones, etc. whatever the reason, it does the trick. I have found that I can still tolerate a small can as long as I don’t chug it (just haven’t tried to chug as sipping works fine). Carbonation in small amounts hasn’t bothered me yet. I try to not do it often though because of the high fructose corn syrup but aside from that, I say if you’re unsure of something, try a small sip (or small bite) and see how it goes. FWIW- I still get nauseous/queasy from time to time and I’m 2.5 months out. Ginger ale still helps. So does ondnasetron.
  5. I’m about 5 weeks out from rny gastric bypass and I’m starting to get back to a more “normal” diet. Are there any meal kits out there that anyone knows of? a couple years ago I was in a ldr and my bf used to order 3-4 meals a week. When I visited, it was enough for two and when I was not there, he always had leftovers since they are designed for 2. Since I’m obviously not eating as much as I did pre op, one kit would probably be 4 or 5 meals and that seems so wasteful because I can’t imagine eating the same thing 4 meals in a row. Are there meal kits out there that make smaller portions?

    Post op constipation…

I had this problem too, and it was compounded by having to have knee surgery 4 weeks after WLS so I was on opioids for pain. I got in the habit of putting Metamucil in a liter of water and drinking it every day. Helped with both the water intake and fiber intake. If I skip a day of fiber-water, I pay the price 3-4 days later but stool softeners help. I also recommend keeping suppositories on hand just in case you have an issue as this helps in the moment. I use refillable water bottles, and the fiber always goes into the same color so that I know I’m drinking the right one.

    First time with foamies/frothing

I’m so glad you posted this question. I have been wondering the same thing. I’m an 2.5 months out and still figuring out what I can tolerate and it’s frustrating when I try to eat something I used to love but don’t currently tolerate it. I’m so relieved to know that eventually I’ll be able to eat the things I loved, even if only small bites at a time.
