3catnight got a reaction from SleeveToBypass2023 in May 2022 surgery?
My surgery is scheduled for Monday, May 2nd! I'm starting to get nervous.
My previous Nissen Fundoplication (hiatal hernia surgery) has to be revised and hopefully the surgeon will be able to do the gastric sleeve at the same time. If not, it will be a few months before he can do the sleeve. But he thinks he'll be able to do both at the same time.
I've been on my liquid diet since Sunday and it's going well. I've been pleasantly surprised. I was dreading it, but I haven't been as hungry as I expected.

I'll suggest CBD oil to her. Thanks.

yes - some surgeons are now recommending that sleeve patients avoid NSAIDs, too.

Yeah I get that. I have RA. I stopped Celebrex about 6 months ago and then began CBD oil. It's working for me. Has your mom tried CBD oil? She might talk to her doctor about it if she hasn't. It might give her some well needed pain relief. It also helps inflammation.

Well the surgeon knows best. From what I understand though even with sleeve you can only take anti-inflammatory on rare occasions even years post op I am a little worried about that too because arthritis is very bad in my family but i Figured they would have to give me rx pain meds Since I had the surgery I hope they will if I need them

My surgeon encouraged me to choose the sleeve over bypass because the previous hernia surgery is less likely to cause complications with the sleeve. And I'd like to eventually be able to take anti-inflammatory meds again. My mom had bypass 14 years ago and she can't take anything much for her arthritis because anti-inflammatory meds burn her stomach. I don't want to be in the same boat when I'm her age.

I am not in a similar situation not but wonder if you have reason to choose sleeve instead of bypass. Many people with history of gerd opt for bypass.

Some Lap Band and VSG patients end up developing GERD or reflux several years post op those two weight loss surgeries. I'm one of them (Lap Band). Both surgeries operate under a high pressure system and years later for whatever reason the high pressure placed on the esophageal sphincter causes reflux/GERD. So now I'm awaiting revision. My surgeon told me that anyone with reflux or GERD currently or in the past, she recommends RNY.
Sure repairing the hernia now will fix the reflux issue currently. But then years later you may be impacted by reflux/GERD again due to the high pressure on the esopageal sphincter (nothing to do with a hernia). When that happens to "cure" the reflux/GERD many revise to RNY.

I had occassional GERD/heartburn when I overate prior to surgery. I am 7.5 months out and I've only had heartburn once - after eating crackers. I know many people get hiatal hernia repairs with sleeve. But I'd ask your doctor whether they recommend bypass or sleeve.

I got the sleeve on April 18th. I have had a few days where the reflux was extremely painful. I have yet been unable to lay down to sleep because of it. I am on a medication for 30 days called pantoprazole 40mg. It worries me a lot because i cant afford to get a revision. I never had this issue before surgery. If you have heartburn. Getting the bypass may be best. It basically eliminates GERD for most people.

Reading this has honestly lifted such a weight off of my shoulders because THIS WAS ME forever. I eat right avoid carbs, exercise , rarely go over 1000 cals a day _ pre op_ and I would never lose weight. Maybe the first week on a new diet Id drop 10 lbs and then NADA. At one point I worked out three hours a day and ate 900 cals a day and even after weeks I still would not lose weight and Drs and folks assume Im just pigging out on three pizzas and a gallon a soda a night. All I ever drank was Water or coffee. I even went down to OMAD and I think because it affected my insulin levels it allowed me to lose 18lbs but then again- Stall no matter what I did. I have hypothyroidism, PCOS and endometriosis which means I also have too much estrogen and i always had this sense that that is why I never lost weight when i barely eat. I can relate to this thread so much and it is giving me hope that this surgery is going to work for me because going through all of this for it not to is beyond anything I can bear... I wish Drs would research more how hormones and PCOS and weight gain and inability to lose weight are all interrelated. Here is wishing us all luck that this works for us.

I finally got my formal PCOS diagnosis a month ago (4 months post surgery) because I went a little ‘Falling Down’ on my local docs. Had 30 yrs of being told ‘lose weight’ ‘move more’ ‘get less stressed’ then hit early menopause and they did it again.

Knew this was my last chance. I was spiralling cos symptoms of both things and resulting mental health probs and weight had turned me into an overeating hermit (oh look, finally proved them right!).

Had the exact same fears as you all. Sleeved 21st Jan at 258. Highest weight 263. Down 61 pounds now. Just hit another stall. Average 650 - 800 calories a day and hit Protein and fluid goals most days. Don’t move as much as many due to on-going arthritis, but do far more than before.

Hope is a hard thing to embrace, but it’s here and my new gynae I found and forced them to refer me to is a superstar. Feeling very fortunate for a change :-)

Yes, I so hate all the presumptions about why we are the weight we are when we have PCOS. Some doctors don't even believe in it. I'm so tire of people saying it's mathematically impossible to not lose weight if you eat the right number of calories. This is such a cruel disease. I hope you are all doing well!

I had RNY on March 18 and have PCOS. I was scared of it not working as well. So far I am down 35 lbs from my highest weight at the start of my preop diet. I feel it is slower than others, but am still making progress, which is hopeful. However, I have gained and lost these same 40 lbs for years and won’t believe anything is different until I’m below 200.

I just had my 2nd follow up this week, does anyone else find it so frustrating that the nutritionists and doctors lump you into the group of people that eat super unhealthy and eat way to much when honestly, I probably know more about food composition than the nutritionist. I feel I don’t belong because I dieted, hard, for YEARS, without results. But everyone assumes you eat way too much because of the excess weight. I am an exercise junky, worked out all the time, ate little, avoided carbs, and still didn’t lose. I know surgery was the ONLY thing that might help. I pray it continues to work for all of us!

I lost the vast majority of my hair from Hypothyroidism and/or PCOS and started wearing a wig 6 years ago. At least there are good wigs out there. The weight bothers me a lot more.

I have PCOS, and I had VSG on 2/6/19. Believe me, I had this fear in the back of my mind all the way up until the day I had surgery. This fear still nags at me, but I am 14wks post-op and am down 36lbs from the day of my consult, which was less than a month before my surgery date. I just had my 3m follow-up with my surgeon today and met the goal he set for the appt (168lbs). I'm still scared that it's all too good to be true and that the weight will just come back, but I'm working hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

I cannot lose weight which I'm told is likely because I have PCOS. I don't mean I can't stay on a diet, I mean I can eat very small amounts of food and not lose weight. Supposedly surgery will change hormones enough to allow weight loss, but I'm terrified that I will have surgery, eat next to nothing but still not lose weight.
