Hello! I'm just curious. I had surgery this past Friday and was told I had to do Clear Liquids for 2 weeks. It seems as if some people don't have the same requirement. How soon were you told that you could start full liquids?

I did too, liquids for 2 weeks, puree for 2 weeks, soft food 2 weeks, then a bit more solid food but had to make sure i had gravy or sauce with it for another 2 weeks then slowly add "normal" foods

    Post op day 5

after sleeping most of the day yesterday I woke up early with my 5.5 year old and let my husband sleep in. I ready to get up anyways because I guess of maybe reflux. I’ve never had it before but something in my sternum area was bothering me.

my belly button incision is still pretty sore while getting up, bending over, and to the touch. It doesn’t, and never did require anything more than Tylenol (which thankfully I have the dissolvable).

I had little meltdown involving some tears over trying to stomach yet again another Protein Shake I hate. Everyone’s beloved fairlife can go straight to hell. So I haven’t even reached 10g of Protein yet people, imma die. Also I need to find another multi Vitamin.

so I pick myself up and brush my tank teeth (all this fake sweet stuff in Protein waters/shakes/vitamins/chewable gas x/dissolvable Tylenol/sugar jello/sugar free popsicles is giving the worse taste in my mouth).

i did manage with no problem 32 oz of Water, 1/2 ounce at time using a med cup, spaced 3 min apart sometimes longer if was doing something. My goal tomorrow is to increase that by another 16 oz, we’ll see.

Ok so after feeling like I was being a major baby about the cussing Protein Shakes I decided to white knuckle it and do 1/2 oz shots with 5 min in between. I had a cup of Water for rinsing my mouth out and an empty cup to spit the rinse into between shots. And I managed 2 oz. and the after taste was STILL after the rinse.

I had a sugar free popsicle for the first time, and even though I am totally over artificial sweeteners, it felt nice to bite into something.

hungry and desperate for something that was palatable, I sent my husband to Panera to get 4 cups of different Soups. I chose to strain the broccoli and cheese Soup and water it down to slide off of spoon. I ate 1/4 cup by toddler spoonfuls every 3 min. I had to reheat 3 times for 19 sec. I wanted to eat the entire cup, but atlas I did not. I was satisfied and then passed out for a nap.

I will be having that for dinner as well. Healthy? Not really, but I need some motherfarten calories, ANYTHING that doesn’t make me gag.

    today was better than yesterday.

I took a lovely shower and did my hair.

    the end.

I was the same I got to a point where my dietian said dont worry about if its good for you just get something in ........so KFC mash potatoes and gravy it was ( puree stage of course ) you are lucky you are sleeping and napping ok i couldnt sleep at all and the horrible taste is probably from reflux mine went away around week 4-6.

My tastes have changed to the extent that I judge foods by "How enjoyable/easy is it going to be to chew that food real good before I swallow."

Pre-surgery, I loved steak. Especially fajitas. But even if I knew my stomach could handle steak (I am 2.5 months out and sure it couldn't), the idea of chewing a piece of steak down to being super soft repulses me. It's not worth it.

Another one was watermelon. I tried some about a month ago. The flavor was fine, but chewing it down is just a terrible experience. It feels like you are trying to break down little strings of plastic in your mouth.

it will get better I was a bit like you and avoided certain foods. I can say I really enjoyed a piece of steak the other day it was good quality nice and tender so i didn't feel i needed to chew it to a mush. I have also had Water melon and I didn't over chew that either and it went down fine. I even had a sausage in fresh bread the other day which i was really worried about and it went down way better than i thought it would ......... I am 16 weeks post op

Hi ok that’s fine. I know I’m not supposed to have greggs pasties etc ever but what about the filling? Is melted cheese and onion filling not suitable either. I’m struggling because I genuinely don’t know what I can eat. By Christmas I will be 9 weeks post op- what can I eat at Christmas?

Not much i am sorry to say, I was still having lots of trouble at the nine week mark, I am close to 16 weeks now and still have the occasional hiccup like the other day I had a sip coke that caused me emesis pain when i have drunk it plenty of times before with out an issue ..........go figure. Just take it slow and chew chew chew. You might be trying to much to soon. when introducing foods back into your diet just eat a little bit and see how it goes first

My wife and I had surgery together almost 1 year ago. We lost almost lb for lb for the first 6 months. After 6 months I was almost done losing but she still had a bit more to go and she continued to lose. Her weight loss slowed down and then stalled for the past few months and just started moving again. Staying with the program that you have will help keep you on track. There will definitely be times where the weight falls off and then times where you are stuck at the same weight.

I hope you are right its been 7 weeks since i have lost anything now, starting to get worried that this is it. I hope not as it has been extremely hard and i would hate to think i went through all this and spent all that money just for a 20kg loss.😔

Hi, I am four months ish post op (21 June) some days are REALLY hard. I personally wasn't given enough 'important' information before surgery and have had to find out a lot of things the hard way. Since surgery there is a lot of food that I cannot eat 75% of the time - I'm not sure why every now and then my body doesn't have a bad reaction but its getting rather frustrating. I didn't know after surgery I 'couldn't' eat certain foods I just knew that I shouldn't if that makes sense. Since I cannot eat much I meal prep once a week and freeze 3/4 of it, otherwise I don't think I would make anything. Today has been a pretty crappy day, too nauseous for Breakfast, took over 30 minutes for one piece of toast for lunch and my meal prep was Tomato chicken with red lentil Pasta and spinach ( I can no longer eat normal Pasta as that makes me sick) - I only had two mouthfuls before feeling sick and foamy. Does anyone have any food suggestions?? right now my body is not liking pasta's egg or starch. I'm afraid ill fall into my old habits of baked Beans and cheese haha. thanks for reading =]

It will get better, baked Beans are ok high Protein so dont feel bad about eating them cheese is a protein food too. I find toast sits in my stomach and i dont feel great for that day. So with a sleeve you are suppose to be able to eat most things and from what i hear it gets easier over time, i have discovered i can drink coke no problems YIKES !!!! I was a bit frightened to eat a lot of things but i am starting to try food that i use to eat but in reality i dont think thats a good idea ( take away queen here ) dont want to fall back into bad food choices. can you have shakes on the mornings you feel sick? It could be that you are eating to much and thats why you get the foamies. Are you on reflux meds? Could be you have a touch of reflux too.

food can still entertain, just not in the quantities you consumed beforehand. I've been reading so many posts with the theme of missing food....I have to admit it goes through my mind sometimes too. A change that I've recently made is to not be distracted by TV, phone, computer etc, and with every single mouthful think about the nutrition, texture, taste. I feel like I'm eating a lot more mindfully, and starting to really enjoy a (small) meal.

I've started growing herbs from seeds. Strange I know, but I work from home in a very isolated place that we have just moved to. No close friends nearby, and sadly had to have our dogs put to sleep last weekend. I have no company at all during the day, and just the family at night. The delivery man must think I'm nuts, I chatter away non stop to him! My point is, I am inside all day at my desk, so taking an interest in growing herbs and shortly a full vege garden gets me outside and doing something that keeps me active and my mind busy.

This site is a great place to get advice and just chat to people. Good luck on your journey, it will get easier every day.

Hi neensyb, I am in Queensland too 🙋‍♀️

I'm sorry you're feeling some blues. I've experienced just a little. I have more anger about not being able to gulp Water or drink and eat now..

I agree with others that our hormones are trying to regulate again and it is ALWAYS worth talking to your care team or professional.

I don't know if this helps at all but I've been open to friends and coworkers why I have been out or MIA. The support and optimism from them has been really surprising! I assumed the stigma behind WLS would have more negativity. I know not all have the same experience but having encouragement from the most random coworkers has been really nice and helped me to solidify this decision and continue to share.

I'm at the end of 3rd week post op. I post once or twice a week in my Facebook to give a post op update. After all, friends and family are nosy 🙂 but it's easier than the texts asking how I am. I have not shared any photos yet. I'm wanting to see more change before I do that.

I wish you luck! I'm thankful you shared with us. We're all in this together!

Hi Jennifer, drinking Water will get easier I can almost drink a full glass in one hit now ( 3 months op) I too have found people to be very supportive even the ones that I thought and know are generally not in favour of weightloss surgery. A few odd ones ave been unkind like saying what are you upset about it you choose to do this. Yes maybe i did but i certainly didnt choose to react the way my body has. Hormones can be horrible things 😐I wish i was one of those people that sail through this smoothly. Can eat and drink what and when they like.. I certainly understand your anger at not being able to drink and eat like we use to I feel that too but as remorse if that makes sense . Thank you for sharing your feelings, we are in this together

I must say, however, the weight loss is helping a great deal although I am too weak right now to work out a lot, still walking. No more weight lifting now they said as this thing could be some type of tear in my chest wall that has leaked blood & Fluid into & around my lung.

    Max weight 287 SW 277 CW 221 surg 5/5

Hope they work out what it is and you have a speedy recovery

It’s going to be 2 years post op for me in Jan next year..
I’ve been doing good when it comes to my Vitamins, nutrients, Protein overall food intake. (or so I think)
I have been dealing with dissociation and anxiety like crazy for a few months and have even gone to the hospital to see how I’m doing. All the tests i’ve gotten back have been nothing but positive and clear… yet I keep leaving my body with blank mind mumbling nonsense, constantly over emotional, and am tired of this feeling of regret.
I would love to know if anyone else is dealing or has dealt with this before? before or after surgery. It’s only been extreme after my surgery.. thank you to whoever has some advice.

Are you talking to a psychologist? That helped me a bit. I am still dealing with regret but my anxiety has lessened. I was the same fine before surgery then a told wreck. I still have moments of tears but thats getting better too. I wish you well.

@sleeversk with your reflux being so bad why did your surgeon do the sleeve? Gastric bypass is what supposedly rids you of reflux (I’m still waiting for my surgery so I can not positively confirm that yet)

Not sure, he said it would get better as i lost weight 😞

Do you ever look at what you used to like eating and great like it is a friend who passed away? Or is the weightloss so good that it's easy enough to put the yearning aside?

I struggle everyday, my surgery was in july this year. I struggle with deciding what am i going to eat for example right now it's 11am and i still havent had breakfast now i am trying to decide what to have for lunch. Like you i am not a meal prepper or planner i tried to be but it just didnt work but in saying that what i am doing now isnt working either. I learnt a very hard lesson that food was a big part of my life although i didnt realize it until after surgery. Make sure you get councilling before surgery and understand your relationship with food. I think that is where my trouble stems from and i have some sort of psychological block as in my mind i cant eat like i use to but the way i think i should eat is so unappealing. Understand fully what it going to be like after surgery. I had in my head i would eat all the same things but smaller amounts how wrong i was. I also had in my head that after 2 years everything would be back to normal ....as my surgeon told me the sleeve only works for 18 months after that its up to you.....that remains to be seen but from what i have read here and people i have talked to no its much longer than that if at all.

** I think about food and what i am going to eat more than i ever did before surgery to the point it drives me nuts . I wish i could decide what to eat and eat it.

I had my surgery on a Monday. I went home on Wednesday. On Friday I had to go to the ER for throwing up blood. A LOT of blood. I had aspiration pneumonia and I had to have another surgery to repair a bleeding ulcer by my esophagus the next morning.

I'm 11 months out. I've lost 128 lbs total, but it should be more. I'm the one not to follow. I eat what I want because I don't crave foods any more. I, literally, have a tough time trying to find something to eat. If I get a chicken sandwich out, I eat it without the bun. I've wasted so much money on food, it isn't funny. I might eat 10 different kinds of food and nothing good. I've never eaten fruit and the few vegetables I do eat aren't great for you. But I do eat smaller portions. I'm still losing, so I can't complain. But I bet my dietician will at my next visit! He was so rude on my last visit! He was horrified that I had a piece of pizza. Umm, I didn't say I ate it all at once! I'm demanding to see the other one. My doctor/surgeon, personally, said I could eat what I want, just in small portions. There are times I do throw up a small bit and that's because I don't wait a half hour after eating to drink. I get so dehydrated and I've always drank a huge amount with my meals. Hardest part of this journey ever!

Yes i find the separating of food and drink difficult to, i also miss carbonated drinks, even a soda Water would be heaven at this point. I find Breakfast incredibly difficult too

I am very worried about the mood swings and intense depression after surgery which I have experienced all my life and it's really bad when I'm restricting my portions. What type of symptoms did you have if you don't mind me asking. I often get angry or become overly sensitive to every comment or perceived slight.

The worst i ever had pre surgery was mild situational anxiety after surgery i spiralled out of control to the point of contemplating suicide I was hospitalised for my own safety and got councilling. I suffered panic attacks and high anxiety. I spent 6 weeks on my sister couch curled up in a ball not wanting to do anything it was horrible for me and for my family and friends. I feel better now but if given the choice again i would not have the surgery.

Oh, I'm kinda anticipating that I will have a gradual weightloss instead of a big drop at the start. Whenever I do a big jump in diet to lose weight my body resists it like it has immunity lol. Then my body settles into ketosis and as long as I keep at it the weight will shift.

Do you find it easier to keep at your diet? That's what Im hoping surgery will do for me. Like guardrails on the highway it will keep me from eating too much even when I feel really hungry. When you feel like you regret it what type of thoughts are coming up for you?

For me I regret everything about the surgery I feel like I have destroyed an important part of my body to achive something normal dieting and addressing my emotional eating would have achived, a high percentage of surgery patients re gain weight just like with normal diets its not the "fix" we go into it thinking it is and it changes the way you eat and drink forever. Its like being on a very strict diet 24/7 with no break. I would love to be able to cheat just a little. The surgeon says that after 18 months keeping the weight off is up to you as the sleeve no longer works not sure how that happens but if thats the case why do the surgery at all. There are also so many other complications they dont really tell you about i know a young woman who has been sleeved for less than a year and currently having a 4th surgery to sort out complications she is having . Personally my reflux now takes double the strength of meds to control but if i dont eat every 3 hours i feel sick from the reflux so is my life better with a sleeve no it is not. Have i lost weight yes 20kg, but i am miserable and to me thats not worth it.

I think I am going through a bit of regret and depression right now too. I had sleeve surgery on September 27th, and since surgery have only lost 9 lbs. I had hoped that I would be one of those people that want to 20 or 30 pounds and a time per month. Am I being too fussy about this? Please don't mince words

What exactly are you regretting ? For me i regret having the surgery at all, i am finding it very hard to cope with the changes to eating and drinking, my reflux now takes twice the amount of meds to control and if i dont eat ever 3 hours which half the time i dont feel like doing i feel sick. I never know what to eat as i have never been a "diet " type of person so I am struggling quite badly i wish i never had the surgery in the first place.

I'm so sorry you're having such difficulties. It sounds like you should definitely reach out to a bariatric therapist. I'm also having a lot of difficulties because I didn't expect to be hungry all the time. I hope you can find some healing.

Yes i am hungry a lot of the time too but its so hard juggling eating between drinking i currently drink less than a litre a day although yesterday i managed 1.25 litres but only because i drank right up until bedtime. Which my surgeon told me no drink or food 3 hours before bed 😕

I agree with lizonaplane, some depression and anxiety is common post surgery but your sounds clinical. I would seek out a therapist, bariatric if possible, but if the waiting list is like it is near me I would see a regular therapist in the mean time.

Yes i have done that it has helped a little
