Hey folks, My surgery was on September 1, and I've lost 58 lbs including the 15 I lost on pre-op diet. But I am really running out of anything to eat to keep up my interest in food and my Protein grams. I'm so tired of never having anything good to eat, I'm afraid I will just snap soon. I'm not a recipe collector and I hate to cook. Other than Protein Bars and shakes which I am so getting tired of, what are or were you eating in your forth month? I've been limited to 600 calories, because I only get about 30 minutes of exercise a day. I need some ideas. other than laughing cow cheese and the usual meats. I'm dreaming of Arby's beef and cheddar and pizza! Thanks

I am hearing you !!! My friend said go on pintest which i did I got so inspired lots of yummies but sadly i haven't been motivated enough to cook any yet. But I do this for work I call it roast beef sushi 😁. Get some sliced deli meat my go to is roast beef, cut carrot, cucumber, capsicum and celery into sticks. Get some cream cheese ( light of course 😉) spread on the beef and then add something like mustard or whatever you prefer. Then get one of each of the veggie sticks put at one end of the beef and roll it up 😃 roast beef sushi !! At about 14 weeks I could eat 2 and a bit for lunch. But yes its hard I havent had lunch yet today and racking my brain what to have for dinner tonight. Do you have anyone to cook for? I wish i did or someone to cook for me 🤣🤣

  2. So every now and then I experience pain, not bad pain but enough for me to wonder is this normal? It can happen after being active which atm isnt very much as where i live its over 40 degrees Celsius outside and i work 12 hours shifts sitting on my now pancake butt 😐 anyway back to the pain it can be short stabbing or last awhile in my tummy area and some near the incision scars. Could it be scar tissue? Or should i be concerned i also have left shoulder pain but not sure if its an old injury flaring up or referred pain from whatever is going on inside my tummy. Oh and sometimes its a kinda burning pain 🤔

If you read through the thread, it HAS been stated that the OP was not a good candidate and shouldn't have been approved for the surgery if s/he was not willing to work at adopting the habits that lead to success. We're not focusing on that point because it's not helpful now. What's done is done. As I said in an earlier post, if the OP just wants to vent and isn't really interested in advice, then all we can say is "I'm sorry you're having a hard time."

But the OP isn't even 6 months out from surgery, so it's much too early to say the surgery has failed unless the OP is unwilling to make changes. People on BariatricPal are disposed to help, so when someone posts "I don't know what to do", we will jump in and try to help with analysis and advice. From the OP's reaction to that advice, it's become clear that this thread was just intended to vent the OP's frustration and anger. Those feelings are valid, but we can't really help with them except to say that it would be a good idea to seek therapy. Beyond that, almost no one on BariatricPal is going to say "Yes, you're right, the surgery is BS." because too many of us have had it change our lives for the better. So if that's the only thing you and the OP would consider to be supportive, you're both likely to be disappointed. 🤷🏽‍♀️

You have offered great advice on many thread threads so I hope you dont think I was referring to you, but there have been quite a few people that have come off as being self righteous. in the original post he /she said they werent good at tracking what they are eating, yes doing that would be helpful but some people arent cut out that way. some commenters also worded it in such a way that if you didn't track there is no way you would succeed and you are a lesser person because of that. Which isn't helpful either.

  4. wow, its just not in some peoples nature to track, journal or keep a diary and for those of you who this comes easily good for you but there is no need to be little those that don't. Maybe people should be looking at these surgical teams that approve the non trackers/ meal preppers/ planners and ask the question why were they approved if it is such a crucial part of the "journey". some of us encountered sleeve and leave surgeons with no support and it is bullshit. the OP is right some of you people need to get down off your high horses and stop looking down your noses at people who's road they travel on for this "journey" is different to yours

I am one week post op and I regret I got the surgery. I wish I would’ve listened to my husband.

i was the same, I am now nearly 5 months out and finally feeling so much better( I got that bad I was put in hospital on suicide watch) then sent 6 weeks on my sisters couch. It gets better I didnt believe it when people would tell me that but it doe. your hormones are most likely going haywire ATM too. given the choice again knowing what i know now would i do it again probably not but we cant turn back time but in saying that i would still be over 100kg instead of 77kg. I still have bad moments/days but it does get better.

P.S. I too am wondering about the OP hope she is doing ok

I still get niggling pains now and yes I still have a moment of panic about it, but never feel embarrassed about getting checked out. its better to get it checked and you be fine rather than not get checked and it be something. take notice when it happens too. I find when i am active i get random pain and i guess its because i did nothing but be curled up in a ball on my sisters couch for 8 weeks after surgery ( yes I was that bad ) that in healing i now may have scar tissue that now gets aggravated when i do any activity

Yes, I'm panicking about everything. Am I eating the right thing? Enough Protein? Getting enough fluids? And then I am terrified that I'll either pop my staples and leak or stretch out my stomach. I was doing really well post op but now the fear has set in and I'm struggling.

I was the same, it has alot to do with your hormones, relax, try some meditation, try to distract yourself it does get better

I developed an earache and have to visit my PCP and that seems to have caused me some anxiety. My heart is racing, Im dizzy, afraid to be alone (taking an Uber), and scared surgery was the wrong choice. Anyone have any gentle reassurances that its all okay?

Hi, How far post op are you? your hormones will be going crazy if you are in very early stages. Its not something they seem to tell us but it certainly happened to me and many others. take a deep breath you will be fine. I developed anxiety in the early stages post op. take notice of when it happens mine started after i had eaten and then in turn that cause pre meal anxiety too turns out i was having a type of dumping minus the pain and need to rush to toilet. so I had rapid heart beat, shaking, tingling dizziness and just a feeling of dread. as my surgeon said once I started on solids it got better but boy oh boy it was not pleasant. I also didnt want to be alone and had lots and lots of tears and deep feelings of WTF have i done to myself. hang in there do what you need to do to feel safe. ((hugs)) it does get better

I'm pretty sure this person just came here to stir the pot. But if he/she didn't......... shame on them.

I feel no pity for them.... the very first post was how he/she was not following the plan... and "guessed" that he/she was eating 800. If you are "guessing" 800 you can bet it's more like 1600.......but he/she won't log food to see what he/she is actually eating....

    wow.................

There are also huge differences between people depending on build, age, medical conditions, medications, exercise capacity, peevious dieting/yo-yo dieting, etc., etc., etc.,

    hang in there, Sleeversk

I am, but it not just weight loss i referred to its the psychological side of things which i feel is more important. Because if you are struggling mentally you in turn struggle physically too.

To those with encouraging words I appreciate it. Those of you who are sitting on your high horse saying “all you have to do is put in the work” can check their ego. Why didn’t you put in the work instead of having surgery? Because you were just as much a lazy slob as me. Nobody who has had this procedure should be judgemental but we’ve got some on here talking like they are Olympic athletes or something. I have been following the advise of my physician. I don’t write everything down but I’m only eating low calorie food. I never drink anything with calories, never eat out…. I don’t even eat what the rest of my family has for meals. I’ve always got my own food to eat. And I’m not losing weight…… like I said, I don’t know what else to do.

You are so right you even made me laugh 😂😂. Personally i dont think you are eating enough i was sleeved same date as you and i had an 8 week stall. Started eating more, the scales started moving but also take notice of the wat clothes are fitting i actually lost size but not weight at one point too

Everyone has covered the mental aspects, so I won't repeat. But I'm curious...

    1. Do you feel restriction when you eat? At six weeks out, it should be very apparent. What happens if you overeat?

    2. What kind of food are you eating? Are you following an eating plan? Or just eating whatever?

    3. Do you eat meals? Graze? Both? What is your style of eating?

    4. Are you hungry all the time? Or do you eat out of boredom, as a coping mechanism, etc?

The folks on this site are super-knowlegeable and might be able to help you figure out what's going on if you provide more information.

I love reading your responses, you give really good advise and ask great questions to help people out ❤❤

I had a chat with my preop team about the LSG I had on 11/8. My preop provider says if patients are using the surgery as an excuse to lose weight faster, they will fail. It’s a process, a tool to help with weight loss. Even with my behavioral health evaluation for the surgery, I expressed that this is a tool for me and not a magic wand to lose weight in a blink of an eye.

So far, I’m 20 lbs lighter after 21 days. My post opt week 4 starts tomorrow and it’s a learning process. I don’t count my calorie intake but I record all my intakes including Water and Clear Liquids.

I wish you the best of luck and maybe get a weight loss therapist.

Unfortunately to many surgeries are done without proper screening and the patient who should never have been approved is and they struggle. I am one of them 😢

Because the surgery helps people better manage a very strict diet program so they can actually sticks to it. Some people lose their hunger for months, making it much easier to be satisfied at 800 calories. Even when hunger returns, a smaller stomach helps with Portion Control.

Its not like that for everyone, i am 17 weeks out and i am starving most of the time even after eating my stomache feels like its going to start eating itself

Let’s talk about some things that play an important factor in this-

You’re a 6ft tall, 52yr old man who started out on the lower end of obesity before surgery and have a current BMI of about 32.5

BMI doesn’t take into consideration your build, lean body mass (especially if you do a lot of physical activity) or genetics.

All of those things along with others like metabolic issues, your BMR basal metabolic rate (the calories needed to do nothing but exist) play a factor into how you will lose or maintain weight.

Based on just a generic BMR calculator (no specifics like lean body mass, etc.) your body burns about 2100 at absolute rest. Eating only 800 calories a day leaves your body in starvation mode and will hang onto every calorie for what it’s worth and not let you continue losing weight. Try adding 2-300 calories a day and see if that helps along with tracking calories.

Try something along these lines for a few days and see if it helps-

    Breakfast (eggs and turkey bacon)
2 eggs, scrambled with 2 cups fresh spinach, 2 slices turkey bacon and 1oz cheddar cheese- 330 calories and 24g Protein

    lunch (stir fry)
3oz chicken breast, 1/2 cup sliced zucchini, 1/4 cup diced tomatoes, and 1/4 cup onion cooked in 1tsp olive oil with spices (Italian seasoning, garlic powder, cumin, etc.)- 225 calories and 29g Protein

    snack
100 calorie pack of almonds (100 calories and 3g protein) OR 2 stalks celery with 1tbsp Peanut Butter (105 calories and 5g protein)

    dinner (tortilla pizza)
1-8” flour tortilla topped with 1/4 cup marinara sauce, 1oz cooked Italian sausage, and 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese- 365 calories and 15g protein

Total for the day- 1025 calories and 73g protein and that’s with the celery and Peanut Butter.

If you need more meal ideas to get you (back) on track then message me. I have a notebook full of them!

Wow that seems alot, I must still be under eating, any wonder i am tired all the time

I had gastric sleeve surgery on July 21st. Over the first six weeks I lost 30lbs. I haven't lost a single pound since then..... My doctor keeps saying I need to keep my daily calorie intake to 800 or less to lose weight. I haven't been logging everything but I think I'm staying around that number... I'm not a very disciplined person so keeping track of that every day usually doesn't happen. I'm super frustrated and getting depressed over this. If I was able to lose weight by sticking to a very strict diet and exercise program I would have done that a long time ago and never had the surgery. I had a big part of my stomach removed for nothing.... Anybody else out there who can't lose weight even after weight loss surgery? I don't know what to do....

You should be on more than 800 cals a day by now, maybe you arent eating enough or the wrong foods, i stalled for a good 8 weeks. I started eating a bit more and the scales started moving. Could also be your body rebuilding any muscle you might have lost in the early days after surgery. Eating to little will cause your body to hang on to every bit it can

I love this thread!! Can anyone else also eat a food only once?

I no longer crave or like sweet things (yoghurt, over night coats, honey, etc). I also immediately stop eating if I dont love the taste of something. I wish I could say it’s because of discipline or at least a conscious decision but it’s not. The moment I taste something that I either dont like or just dont care for that much I immediately lose my appetite. That’s completely new!!!

The strangest thing I noticed though is that I can’t eat things more than once in a row. For example: I made bean Soup and had so much left over that I planned on eating it throughout the next week. The first time I had it it tasted so so good. The second time it made me naseous (so I stopped) and the third time just the smell alone made me nearly 🤢. Same thing with other foods.

Oh! And I HATE garlic!!! So weird! Used to love it and put it in pretty much anything.

My sense of smell also seems heightened and sensitive. So much has changed!

Yes there have been a few things that one day it will be yummo then when i eat it again its yuck.sense of smell has also heightened for me. I use to love spicy foods now not so much. Frozen meals are a big turn off for me too which is a nuisance because i rely on them for work 🤔 and yes i have to really like something or i cant eat it

Thank you for this. I have been reading about carbs I can eat and I’m so scared about rice, bread, and Pasta. I understand that it will take up to 18 months for the pouch to stretch again. In the meantime, sashimi is my new sushi order.

I eat bread and Pasta, all in moderation i have on occasion toast for /with Breakfast. A couple of frozen kids meals that were pasta no problems. I think as long as youbare not having big serves and not everyday you will be fine

    2 week post op appointment

My last weight prior surgery was 168. That was my weight at the last appointment prior to surgery which was a week before, so it may have been a little more. I say more because I did not do a pre- op diet…at all. I ate all the things up until the day before surgery. I did a liquid diet for 24 hours the day before surgery.

    Starting weight: 168 pounds

    height: 5 foot (imma meatball)

    Self pay, BMI 33.2

2 week post op: 152.8 pounds

    down: 15 pounds

When I told my surgeon that I haven’t met (or even have come close to) meeting Protein goals, and I haven’t drank a single Protein Shake. He said “don’t worry about the Protein, I don’t really want you drinking protein shakes”. UMMM what?!? I mean, weight lifted because I’m not doing it anyways. He was pleased that I’m staying hydrated with just Water, and that I am eating 2oz at a time. I told him I having cravings, and he said have one bite and be done with it. He also told me to start eating fruit. Music to my ears. I feel a lot less stressed about it all. He doesn’t seem super strict, which I don’t know if it’s case by case. Being that i started at a low obese BMI, maybe that has something to Do with it. He also said my hunger is likely to decrease over the next few weeks.

Enough appointment talk. Back to what’s going on with me post op day 15.

I’ve been able to take a mouthful of Water and swallow 3-4 times in a row. Still pretty small sips, but I’m no longer using a med cup (haven’t for while) or waiting minutes between.
I am having a hard time slowing down with my meals too. I’m definitely not taking 20 minutes. I find my found myself eating 3 small bites rather quickly, then taking it slower after that.

My Vitamins have become a 10 minute ordeal of me almost throwing up. Like my mouth will water like I’m about to puke. I just try really hard not to.

My energy level is pretty good. Considering no caffeine and little protein.

For Breakfast I had 1.5oz canned chicken and 0.5 oz banana)

For lunch I had canned Annie’s vegan chili (1oz) and 1oz smashed potatoes, pinch of shredded cheese. It was yum!

    feeling good!

Im not a slow eater either and at 16 weeks surgery hasnt changed that but i try. I can drink a reasonable amount of water now and i rarely take my Vitamins i think as long as i am are eating a varied diet its ok.all my bloods have come back good so far although I am experiencing Hair loss at the moment so i am trying not to stress about that but thats normal so see how it goes.

Hello! I'm just curious. I had surgery this past Friday and was told I had to do Clear Liquids for 2 weeks. It seems as if some people don't have the same requirement. How soon were you told that you could start full liquids?

I did too, liquids for 2 weeks, puree for 2 weeks, soft food 2 weeks, then a bit more solid food but had to make sure i had gravy or sauce with it for another 2 weeks then slowly add "normal" foods
