If you are post surgery it could be your hormones going wacky on you. Mine did a bit and I just didn’t want to do anything for a couple of weeks but then it leveled out. How long Have you been seeing this therapist? Do you like them? Sometimes it is good to be reminded that we have good stuff going on in our lives too but I hope that is not really all your therapist is offering you in terms of help. Are you upset about something specific or just feeling down? If you are having a hard time with the loss of food like lizonaplane mentioned, the bariatric therapist may be better equipped to help you through that. If you do not feel that your therapist is helping you then try someone else. I went through several until I found the right fit.

totally agree, i thought i was going nuts once i realized it was my hormones and sorted them out i feel so much better. very few surgeon address this pre surgery and some dont recognise it post surgery either which is pretty poor considering how common it is. and yes you will be greiving food and going through a major life adjustment. so dont be hard on yourself. get a new theropist ( I had 2) one to address my adjustment disorder once he explained it made total sense. and the other ddressed my excessive worry. I then worked out on my own food was my best friend that i no longer had ..... its does get better even doesnt feel like it will right now...it does trust me i was a mess for the first 5 months

Lizonaplane went through this. She ruled out all the other causes and it was true hunger. There are many things it could be disguised as hunger though. Hopefully she will respond but one thing I remember she said helped satisfy the hunger was warm beverages such as tea.

I went through this too, I found drinking more helped. People kept telling me it was head hunger it wasnt my stomach would gurgle and carry on and straight after eating it would feel like an empty pit.

Ty. I'll try to drink more. It's hard to drink 60 plus oz a day with not being able to eat 30 minutes before or after but I'll definitely try.

Yes it is hard at first but it does get easier, i just put up with that hunger feeling tried to distract myself it wasnt until i could drink more that the lightbulb moment hit and i put it together. I found 15 minutesbefore eating is ok as long as its a small drink.

  4. Drink more water/ fluids. I had this right from the start it an empty gnawing hungry even straight after i ate. I found drinking 15 minutes before a meal not a lot maybe a small glass and a small drink about 30 mins after helped. I also find if i havent drunk much during the day i get really hungry.....which is probably thirst

I am now 4 weeks post-op and my anxiety is MUCH better. I knew from prior surgeries that surgery sets off my panic and it certainly did with this. But I am employing the strategies I learned in pre-op therapy and that helps. Overall, I just needed to heal, feel better, and get back to everyday life to be ok.

You are doing really well it took me months to start feeling better.

Great thoughts. If you are living together, it may be hard to hide the WLS. When I came home from the hospital, I had all sorts of literature laid out about nutrition, when to call the exchange, etc. I had new types of supplements. Even months out, my Vitamins have the word “bariatric” on them.

As far as others, it is up to you. Whatever makes you comfortable. For me, only my husband knows. I figure that there will be ignorant people who won’t understand weight loss surgery as a medical need, and won’t take the time to learn. If I lost weight, they would think that I took the easy way out. If I didn’t lose weight, they would think that I am a hopeless glutton, that even WLS wouldn’t work.

I don’t need that stress in my life. So it was easier for me not to say anything. When people comment, I talk about my diet change, which is part of the truth. GL!

If I lost weight, they would think that I took the easy way out. If I didn’t lose weight, they would think that I am a hopeless glutton, that even WLS wouldn’t work.

this gave me a giggle only because its so true we cant win either way

  7. maybe just say to her that when you went to see about your "hernia" WLS was suggested and you are seriously thinking about/decided to do it. that way its doesn't looked like you have lied. I know I know some of you are going to say but that's covering up a lie, well yes it is but you are telling the truth about the surgery in the end. There is no way you are going to get away with "I Had a hernia repair" after the surgery.

  8. I had this before surgery, I had a sleeve done. while I am still on medication (Nexium) it is under control for the most part. I get a burning in the top of my throat if I haven't eaten for awhile. but its not unbearable I am hoping it gets better as my surgeon said it would when I expressed my concerns before surgery.( the weight loss would reduce the pressure and there fore resolve the problem) however I haven't been game to test this yet and not take the Nexium. same advise try not to eat or drink an hour or so before bed my surgeon said 3 hours but that just isn't practical with my shift work.

  9. I Hope they find answers but from what you said it certainly sounds like your sliding hernia is the issue. hope they resolve it for you soon. sorry if I offended you with my suggestion as to what could be causing it only trying to help .sending best wishes. Happy Year New !!🎉

  10. Who cares what they think and really its a bit rude if they do comment on the amount you eat I mean we don't say to normal/big eaters "oh gee you eat a lot" do we ? if they do comment just say you have a small tummy and you dont over eat to stretch it like they have done with theirs lol. 🤣.

I don’t think it’s stress, I have been taking it easy post surgery and don’t feel stressed? Just tired of the constant disphagia.

I had existing problems with my esophagus, throat and voice going in due to a hiatal hernia. They didn’t fix it during the surgery (said they didn’t see it… which well what can you do at this point?) I’ve had the hernia for over 6 years on multiple endoscopies.

I’ll just wait and see what the GI shows and hope it’s a stricture that they can dilate or something. I would hate to have to go through this again with a follow up hernia surgery. 🤞

Sometimes we dont feel stressed but are, but i was going ask about a hernia but thought because you were so fresh out of surgery surely they would have seen and fixed it. Maybe you have a sliding hernia? Another thing i was going to ask just because i did it myself today are you separating food and drink ? I didnt tonight and boy it feels awful like something stuck and waiting for it to go down. Just a thought,

  12. Hi Sherry,

You need to get your family on board to support you. Explain to them how hard it is without their support. Its very easy to be tempted to eat food when its there. Could you possibly get your own fridge and cupboard space for your food so that you don't see the other food?

You are still 22kg lighter than when you started so that is a good thing. being in lockdown would be hard we have been very lucky where I live.

Could you start an indoor hobby like art and craft or reading/writing something that will keep your mind off food? also try an app that you can track your calorie in take. I use one called my fitness pal. its easy to use not sure if its available in different languages but worth having a look.

  13. Dont stress to much i had a horrible time of it all just do the best you can,try to drink fluides like hydrolite or sports drinks, eat you Protein first or add tasteless protein powder to your food. It gets easier and better. I thought i was going to die but here i am at 5 months and starting to worry because i can eat way more than i thought i would and i can drink sparkling water/ soft drinks again. Which could be a bad thing (coke addict). Oh with your Water put a splash of something in it be it juice, cordial or whatever it makes the water easier to get down and sits in your tummy better

So hidden bonus: my problems drinking and eating, where it wasn’t going directly into my stomach but backing up my esophagus is much better!

As soon as I could drink again after my horrible day of vomiting, I could finally take a sip and not have to wait for it to go down. It’s making it possible to drink the required amount of Water finally!

I guess it must have knocked something loose? 😂

Maybe but definitely tell your surgeon about what happened.

  15. Someone I know developed an intolerance to Protein mostly in meat form after surgery maybe this has happened to you too and that in turn has turned you off eating because you now associate eating with being physically sick. I agree woth the others stick to food you can eat without reaction until you get it sorted. I think its perecftly normal for you to feel the way you doing given what you are experiencing. Hope you find answers and feel better soon

I'm 13 weeks sleeve post op. Losing 1-2 pounds a week. sleeping well. Feeling well overall. But the thought of chewing and swallowing a meal just turns me off so I don't do it.

Getting plenty of Protein thru Greek yogurt and Protein Shakes and applesauce with added collagen. Some fruit and nuts but no meat. Ugh!

So am I developing an eating disorder or are there others who just don't enjoy food?

    Thanks!

Perfectly normal at this stage. What I did to overcome this stage was to make myself try something everyday. Some days were successful and some werent the foods that werent i put on the try agsin in a couple of weeks list.

Aaaand I’m back in the ER. I got what I thought was a Migraine today. When I took my meds I got sicker and anything I drank, even just 2 sips are being thrown up.

Every ER in the area is full. So I’ve been sitting here for 5 hours waiting. They gave me fluids but refuse to give me any meds through the IV like Tylenol or anti nausea meds so that I could go home.

They want a CT scan since my stomach hurts. I was throwing up a bunch so it’s not surprising it hurts.

A bunch of people have been here for 8+ hours only to give up and go home. I feel like I can’t since I am not sure I can keep fluids down yet.

I spent all day yesterday at the emergency vet with my cat, and now after two days of low access to Water and food, I feel awful and weak…

Gosh I hope you are ok, hopefully its just from stress and not eating/drinking

  18. it will go away, I am 5 months out now and only just starting to get the empty gnawing feeling under control, i was getting even straight after eating. i found having a drink about 15 minutes before eating helped and once i had a drink 30 mins after eating it seem to settle it too. I put it down to the fact i always drank and ate at the same time and now that is missing i still feel hungry sometimes after eating but a drink usually fixes it
