Yes I had this too and its tough. There are still things that I am 'over' I have gradually expanded my diet and found Thai foods are tasty to me. You will sort it out and find your way. Keep trying different foods

It's no different. I will, however, always dispute the well-worn myth that it's hard to get your Protein in. I've never had an issue. Once you know what foods are your higher protein options (and there are many), it's no more difficult than lacto-ovo diets. There's so much available these days!

Smanky got a reaction from Happy with two in Afraid to eat.
It took me months to be able to eat "normally". Combo of zero appetite, my paranoia of hurting my stomach and new intestine join, and strong restriction. Everyone's post-op experience is subtly different, and some cases, wildly different dependent on the type of surgery, your body, your pain tolerance and heal rate etc etc. There's no "right way", other than sticking to the plan your team gives you. Beyond that you just have to do your best.
So don't worry, don't beat yourself up. I've always had sips of Water with meals and don't care. Nothing's broken and I'm doing fine. Things will get easier and you'll settle into the new routine in time.

Smanky got a reaction from Arabesque in 3 months post mini gastric bypass. What do you guys think of my progress, diet and workout? Any feedback or suggestions?
74lbs in 3 months is excellent. I lost MUCH slower than that. You can absolutely make a weight of 180lbs a reality. I never thought I'd ever weigh in the 60s (kilograms), yet here I am and still losing. Stick to your plan and it will happen!
As for what you're doing, so long as your team are on board and you're managing it well, then there should be no issues. Just be mindful that muscle weighs more than fat, so get out the measuring tape as a secondary indicator that you're losing, otherwise the scales may trick you into thinking you're not doing as well as you are!
I personally love my mini bypass/omega loop, and could not be happier with my choice. It's a more common procedure in my country, but yes, on here we're a tiny group!

Smanky reacted to SleeveToBypass2023 in Hey ya'll...been a minute!!!
Thanks so much, everyone!! I'm just keeping my fingers, toes, and eyes crossed that I can get to the end of all this, get my revision, and go about living my life again. Every time I come out of a surgery, the surgeon tells me he found more stuff to remove. Last time I told him "No more looking around in there. Just get in, remove what's there, and get out" He laughed. I was serious.
As expected, my weight loss has kind of stopped due to the weird dietary issues and not being able to do the kind of work outs my body is used to. But I'm not gaining, so I'm ok with it. I know in my heart that I'll lose the rest of my weight after my revision. Can't wait to finally feel better and get back to normal.
And still, even with all this, I don't regret my sleeve. I hate that I had complications, but I know I never would have gotten to where I am now weight and health wise if I hadn't had the surgery.

Agree with everyone else here: get help now. Especially a bariatric therapist. You don't want to let it go on for too long or the way back will feel overwhelming (this was always an issue of mine).
I think it's safe to say all of us are forever standing on that cliff, and it doesn't take much to stumble off the ledge. Good luck OP, you can get back on track.

I did it! I did a practice run to work and back 5 miles total, I would have never been able to think about riding a bike to work. I lost 117 lbs so far and I can't believe I just rode a bike 5 miles. I feel amazing. It's been a journey that I am glad I took. And guess what I weight less than my husband, well depends on the day. I went from a tight 28w to comfortable 20w clothes. I still have a ways to go, but nothing can stop me now. Next on my bucket list is skydiving. Let's do this!

    Hi all,
Been a while since I posted here but my 5 year surgiversary is coming up so thought I might…
I got into cycling about 3 years ago and it’s kind of taken over my life. Went to back Belgium (where I got my sleeve) last weekend and took part in a brutal cycling event - Tour of Flanders Cyclo, 177km with 2300m of climbing on often cobbled hills. Pro’s raced many of the next day.
Couple of pics below, quite pleased with myself but now focussed on losing a bit more timber - I did have a blip during lockdown and gained nearly 20kg but currently at my lowest since surgery. ~57kg off my heaviest.

I hope you can find help OP. I think (know!) the surgical restriction helps a lot but we also need to address our underlying issues with food while we have that restriction in order to keep our weight off in the longer term.
If you can connect with a bariatric therapist asap to check what you're doing that you shouldn't be that might be a good first step.
I wish you ALL the luck xxx We're here to help if we can.

Try and get some help before this gets out of control and you feel that you have failed. Contact your team and a therapist quickly, You are not the first and person to struggle. I still have a fear of loosing my restriction and doing the same. chocolate is my nemesis

I had so much trouble with salmon, so much so that I have really stopped eating it and before the surgery it was my favourite food after noodles. I can eat smoked salmon but I hate the taste now. Potatoes are also still off my menu, I got the foamies last night after trying them again for supper.
Try foods with sauce like bolognaise, chilli, braised meat and veg. If you need something softer - try chunky Soups, soft scrambled eggs, ricotta bake, crust less quiche or chicken thighs lightly cooked in Pho or broth with a few veggies. Do not be afraid of eating, just go back a step, be patient with your toddler tummy. We are not all the same and you are very early in your journey
PS My team said it was ok to have tiny sips of drinks [ they said Hot Drinks were best]
PPS You wont get slated in here, we have all 'broke the rules' because every team has a different idea on any given subject

Smanky got a reaction from longhaul68 in Tips/Tricks to get thru the 2 wk pre-op liquid diet??
I was on Protein Shakes and one non-starchy vegetable meal per day, so a similar plan to yours. No idea why some folks get super-restrictive milk diets and others can eat solid meals, but each surgery has its own way of doing things.
Yes, the pre-op diet sucks, the cold-turkey off sugar addiction alone is brutal. But it's only two weeks. I kept that in my head at all times - two weeks is a blink of an eye in this whole process, and by week two my pre-surgery nerves had kicked in and that nervous energy helped divert my attention. Distract yourself with anything you can. Games, cleaning, walks, books, walk-and-podcast or walk-and-audiobook. Whatever you're able to do. Drink Water, keep it on hand at all times. Stay focused on why you're doing this. Make wishlists of what you want to do and wear when you start dropping those sizes.

Smanky reacted to Arabesque in Gas pain recommendations!
The surgical gas is in your abdominal cavity not in your digestive system (not inside your tummy or intestines). Burping, farting & gas X won’t work. The gas rises & sits behind your lungs putting pressure on nerves causing the upper body & shoulder pain. It is absorbed into your lungs where it breathed out. Walking, marching on the spot, pumping your arms up & down forces the gas up & out (because you breath more heavily with the physical activity). Slow & deep breathing exercises can help too. It usually takes about a week for it to fully dissipate

I also took on a second physical job and yep - the muscles aren't what they were! I regularly get a dull ache in the mid-back region due to my core strength being non-existent. I've also had a couple of injuries that are taking their merry time to get better, the worst of which is the knee I broke badly coming off a bike. It's tricky balancing the food intake with physical activity and I haven't managed to work it out yet.

Things have been super annoying lately. I had surgeries for all the polyps in my stomach in Jan, Feb, and March. Thought I was done, then the doctor looked down through my duodenum and found nodules all through it, so now I have a surgery on the 14th of this month to remove them. Hopefully he can get them all, if not, then I'll have 1 last one in May. THEN I will be cleared for revision surgery in either June or July.
On the plus side, my A1c is now 5.3, which takes me out of even being pre-diabetes and is now officially normal. My blood pressure stays around 110/70ish. I'm in size 18 clothes now (from size 28), size 7 ring (from size 10), have a lot of annoying loose skin (the only real skin that bothers me is the loose skin on my neck/chin). I'm back to being able to do my normal work outs again.
All in all, I'm doing well. Just want these surgeries to be finished so I can have the revision, recover, and get back to living my life normally. There will be new adjustments with the bypass (my main fears are strictures and malabsorption) but I'll get the hang of it like I did with the sleeve. Just ready for everything to finally be finished.

Smanky got a reaction from SleeveToBypass2023 in Bariatric Friendly Starbucks Coffees
I imagine Starbucks iced coffees etc are absolute calorie bombs due to the fat and sugar. Honestly, I'd be taking this time post-op to wean yourself off drinking your calories, and especially in the early months drinks really need to have a Protein focus.
I was never given a coffee restriction (I was offered coffee the first night in hospital), so once my stomach had some time to heal, my daily treat was a small soy latte, no sugar. Soy has a good amount of protein in it, and a small soy latte is an acceptable 75 calories.

Smanky reacted to pintsizedmallrat in Worried I won't lose enough
I have lost nearly 60% of my body weight since 8/2021 with a sleeve, a total loss of 132 pounds on a 4'10" frame, and I could lose more if I had it to lose. It can be done. To be completely honest, my biggest problem at this point is keeping what I've got left ON.
Additionally, I would focus on reaching a weight where you are happy and your health metrics have improved. That may be more or less than your doctor said. For whatever it's worth, my doctor said I should expect to land between 135 and 145 and here I am in "none-derland" at 99.

First, you should ask your surgeon about his/her guidance on caffeine after surgery. Most surgeons don't want you to consume caffeine for a certain period. (Mine recommended a year after gastric bypass, which is when I resumed drinking coffee.)
I think the only acceptable option would be black coffee, with skim milk and artificial sweetener if you like. (That's my go-to drink every morning, made at home.). You really shouldn't do anything with sugar or fat after surgery, including whole milk, syrups, whipped cream, processed sugar, etc. Any of those would be empty calories when you should be prioritizing Protein.
When your surgeon says you can have caffeine, you could do an iced coffee with skim milk, but I'm not sure there is any way to make a Frappucino bariatric-friendly.
