Im sure this has been addressed before but has anyone felt some form of depression after gastric sleeve surgery?

I did my surgery 4 weeks back and i feel sad, i miss food! it was such a joy for me, i used to look forward to going out for dinner or lunch. Now im wondering will i ever enjoy food again ? Will i ever be able to eat with my family again ?

I went out twice with my family for lunch since the operation and i felt soo jealous ! I really wanted to eat and participate in that social activity but i only had tea

Im wondering if i did the right decision ....

I felt the same way as you at first. I am 7 months out now and it isn't as bad. I can enjoy going out. I still struggle sometimes with wanting more of something just because it tastes good not becuz I need it. I am working on that. When that happens I tell myself I can have it later (in 2-3 hours) or tomorrow. It helps in the moment and usually by later, I no longer want it. However, I am not sad about it anymore. food is losing its power over me slowly and I am enjoying the benefits of being a " normal" size much more than eating. I can do so much more! Wear so much more! Be less anxious about where I can go/fit/ wear/ so much more! One thing I still am having trouble with is people paying attention to me. I was used to being invisible/unseen by others and now people "see" me, talk to me, hold doors for me, look at me...and it just feels weird after being ignored by everyone so long!

So I hit a milestone this week of 50kg lost. Which is around 110lbs. I can't believe I've lost so much and I feel so much better thanks to this surgery 😊 I am about 75% to my goal now and even though the weight loss is slowing down, I never thought I would be this weight by February! 😁

Congratulations. So happy for you! Can't wait to hear that you made goal!

  3. I am 6 months out and have lost about 68 pounds. I had been stalled since the end of November and sought advice from my nutritionist. She said to to keep on keeping on. So I did and suddenly this past week, I started losing again. I go by volume rather than oz. But I eat 3/4 a cup at a time. Eat between 800-1000 calories a day. Work out at the gym 3 times a week and do 30 minutes of cardio 6 days a week. I wish it were more and I have certainly not my surgeons goals at any check up, but I am close. He wanted me to be at 160 by my February appt. I am not sure I am going to make that, but I will be within 10lbs of it.

  4. I agree with everyone else. One month out is too soon to think about a reversal. I experienced "buyer's regret" at first. Your mind has to adjust. food didn't seem to hold the same appeal and I still don't get the same pleasure from it, but I have adjusted and am so glad I had the surgery. Food doesn't rule my life anymore, I am finding new ways to get that pleasurable feeling. Food is for fuel. I have discovered there is so much more to life and living than food! But boy did it make me sad and mad and regretful at first. Ride it out a little longer, give your mind time to adjust and then see how you feel!

  5. I agree with everyone else 300 seems low. I am to stay between 600-800 for the first year.

My Nutritionist told me it was fine to break my meals into 2 meals so I eat 6 small meals a day and am losing. I am down to 207 from 245 and I am one month and one day out from surgery.

    I Hi All!

I had surgery on July 15 so I’m just about a month out. I’m panicking because I started out at 250 before my 2 week preop diet. During my preop diet I lost 9 pounds. I went into surgery at 241 pounds. I’m now almost a month later 226 pounds. For the last week it’s been at 225 and today it jumped to 226.6. Last night I had about 600 calories…previously it’s been between 350-500. I decided to jump it up some to see if I could get over my stall and I gained!! Ugggggh…what am I doing wrong? I got this surgery to better my health and to lose weight of course and I feel Im on an up and down cycle again. Please help with advice. I figured adding more calories would help with weight loss…guess my body said nope! Feeling a little defeated!

I had surgery in the same day as you and. Just went through a similar experience. I was stalled with no weight loss and gaining and losing the same pound or two for a week and a half. I just kept following my regimen and suddenly yesterday ai was down three pounds.

I figured my body was just adjusting to the until weight loss and just trusted the process. That was really hard for me because on previous diets a stall like that would totally derail me.

I am pretty proud of myself for sticking it through.

My doctor said everyone's experience is different except for that first stall 3-4 weeks out. She said universally everyone experiences some sort of stall.

I was told after surgery I would go home with a “pain pump”!

One that I had to pay for. I’ve never heard of such a thing. My surgery date is August 18, 2021. If I could just make it 6 more days on this liquid Only regimen. I’m missing food so bad my heart ❤️ hurts.

I was glad for the pain pump. It helps keep your tummy numb. I came home with mine and was instructed to remove it three days later. I think they are very common now for WLS surgery.

The liquid diet is super hard and very trying at times, but you can do it! I was on liquids for 15 Days and once it was over I was so glad. I had surgery on July 15 and yesterday I got to move to normal foods. Just try to remember this is temporary.

I’m on my last week of birth control since I have to get off of it for one month prior and one month after... not starting a new pack even though the days don’t align perfectly.
mom only required to do a two-week diet, so I’m using these weeks prior to that time to have my “final meals” with stuff I’ve already purchased so it won’t go to waste. Enjoying my last bits of fruit juices, ice creams, rice (which is HUGE in my culture). Stopped buying snack foods since I won’t finish them all. Stopped buying new clothes back in April when I started the process. I’m nervous for July 4th weekend since my surgery is on the 9th. I want to be able to enjoy myself and food just feels like such a big factor in doing so. My family and friends are extremely supportive and said they’d help find foods I can still enjoy that fit my low fat diet but still sort of nervous of inconveniencing people.

In the beginning it was hard for me too. I had my surgery July 15. I found taking very small sips from a shot glass worked best or taking warm drinks from a Cappuccino cup worked for me. I drank Protein Water to do double duty. And if those tricks didn't work, I grabbed sugar free popsicles and tried to suck on a few of those an hour. Mine were 1.5 ounces each so four of those an hour gave me six ounces of hydration

Hi, everyone! I am a little late to the party, but I just had surgery on Tuesday, July 27, and I’m excited to have found a group of people who are on the same timeline as me.

It’s 4:07am, so obviously I’m not sleeping through the night yet, but I feel pretty good overall. I have had some big feelings, though, of being very worried that I’m going to be miserable about this choice I made, even though prior to surgery I was so positive and upbeat about it. Anyone else having that mental struggle?

I had my surgery on July 15 and initially after surgery, I had similar feelings. I am feeling better and not regretful at this point and looking forward to the positive changes.

Finally got home from Tijuana today.... surgery was Monday 7.26.2021 with dr. verboonen at V Bariatrics (Obesity Goodbye Center). Ever since I got to the hotel yesterday. I've been sipping Powerade, Gatorade, Water, broth, SF popsicles nonstop. Is that okay? Or am I supposed to only consume during set times throughout the day? Also how did you get comfortable? Best thing to make scars dissapear ? Trying to plan ahead

I am on full liquid diet right now, but go to purée on Monday/Tuesday next week.... what are your favorite recipes?

When did you notice that initial bloat go away from surgery? I'm 2 lbs down from surgery date but my stomach is stuck protruding out bc of being so sore.

Getting your hydration is very important. I think alot of people recommend getting 4 oz every 15 minutes. But however to can do it is fine as long as it doesn't cause discomfort. I sip all day long!

I just started puree foods and have kept it pretty simple. Alot of people talk about the ricotta bake. I haven't tried it becuz my store was out of ricotta but I plan to try it. So far I have has cottage cheese with pureed fruit, refried Beans and pureed salsa chicken, tonight I made shrimp scampi and pureed the shrimp and had mashed potatoes. I need to try some veggies next. I chose just a few foods to start and plan to add a different one every few days as tolerated.

Mu stomach stayed swollen for quite a few days even though I was losing weight. I amon Day 14 and it seems to be pretty normal now.

I hope your recovery is a smooth one and look forward to hearing updates on your progress.

  11. I take things in regular size containers. Talk more, move my utensils around stirring food or moving food around in the container more and so far it is going okay. I am still in the Full liquid stage so I do a lot Soups and yogurts. So far no one has noticed, that I am aware of. I do tell people I am doing more mindful eating so pausing between bites, etc... Mindful eating is a buzzword so it seems to placate them.

Hey everyone!! I had mine done on the 20th. I need some advice. (I hope everyone feels better soon that’s not feeling well from their surgery :) ). So my issue is that I’m not having any issues with the amount of fluids or Protein to get in. In fact I’m feeling hungry. I was supposed to be on Clear Liquids for a week post op. But I transitioned to full liquids today. And I’m still not having any issues. I get between 50 and 60 oz of Fluid in per day. I could drink a full 11oz bottle of Premier Protein within a half hour. I also had about 4oz of vanilla sf pudding within 10 mins. Is anyone else having this issue? I’m thinking to myself like did my doctor forget to cut it all out. 🤣. Now I’m worried that this isn’t going to work for me. I am feeling super frustrated right now. But trying to remain positive.

Don't worry. If you search the forum, you will see others who have had the same experience as you. In those cases their restriction hit either when they started purees or when they went to solid foods. Glad you are doing well!

    Hi Blue bonnet,

are your incisions stitches or staples?

most of mine look ok apart from the bigger two, I have staples in mine. The incisions look really neat and clear but where the staples are in the skin mine are also red and delicate. But no pus or heat.

I have them taken on on Tuesday!

perhaps pop a photo of it over to your nurse?

Other than that, I hope your doing well 🙂

Mine are incisions closes with glue. I think I may have an allergic reaction to the glue

  14. I am one week two days out from surgery and overall feeling good.

My incisions seem to be healing well and don't hurt, but there is a large area of redness around each one. It doesn't hurt, there is no drainage and no heat. But noticably red around them. I am very fair skinned. Is this normal?

Tomorrow is my day. I'm not nervous AT ALL.

I've always looked for "signs." Like if there were bumps in the road as I was trying to do something, I tend to think it was God warning me not to do it. There have been no bumps -- so, I'm thinking God's got this. LOL

Today was all the phone calls from the people wanting their money, anesthesia and hospital. My debit card was declined even though I've got the amount needed. At first I thought it might be a sign --but guess what, the girl on the phone had VGS back in 2013. She just so happened to be my same weight and height at the time of her surgery. We talked and talked. So --I took that as a good sign. It turns out my bank puts a cap on how much you can debit in one day as a safety measure. I had to call the bank and tell them what was going on. Then they had to get approval. So it has taken all day to pay the hospital --but I'm expected there at 10:30 tomorrow.

School starts on the 9th of August. I'm hoping I will have had enough down time to teach without complications.

Good Luck! Looking forward to seeing your journey.

Update on Surgery I had on July 19th.Not going to lie I was in so much gas pain and anything I drank burned going down..Was mostly on Morphine and anti nauseous medication ohh and sleeping.. Second day was easier. Was walking around, drinking more fluids and releasing the gas..I'm really thirsty but ill take it day by day. I was told my the team of doctors that it's best to have Decaf tea, Water and brooth until I slowly bring back the shakes.

It does get better with each day! Had my surgery on July 15 and was questioning what I had done the first few days but feeling better and starting Full liquids today. Don't rush it!
