    Hiatal Hernia

I had a medium sized HH repaired as well at the same time that I did not know I had. Pain wise, I think it was more painful than the sleeve itself. The recovery is roughly the same according to my surgeon. You do need to be extra careful with no heavy lifting or exerting yourself because it cause the stitches to loosen and the hernia to re appear. My surgeon told me 6 weeks to start back with lighter lifting or moderate exertion.

    Wine

Weren’t you just in the hospital a few days ago? I’ve seen a few posts you’ve made regarding unhealthy food choices or what seems like more severe issues post sleeve. I would definitely encourage you to speak to your nutritionalist and/or doctor’s office so you have a better feel of their post op plan so you’re not getting sick and taking the best care of your body possible. A Bariatric therapist may be a good choice as well if you’re struggling with food or alcohol issues.

    2 week Pre Op Diet

I only had a liquid diet from 12pm through 12am the day before surgery. All doctors are different and have a specific plan they like patients to follow. I’ve seen quite a few people here that have a few weeks of liquids only before surgery.
  4. It’s most likely a reaction to the adhesive they use for the steri strips. I had this as well and tried everything possible to help including antihistamines and topical benedryl. The best thing I found was using a kaolin clay mask for 10 mins and rinse off. It helps draw out the oils that caused the allergy and soothe the skin. Calamine lotion would help as well. Make sure all the strips are moved as well since they are just trapping the allergens.
  5. I’ve tried doing quite a few searches and can’t seem to come up with any studies done with Bariatric patients and what the stall actually is and what makes it stop. I hypothesized what the above posted mentioned on starvation mode ( I know quite a bit about this from my bodybuilding days long ago) but generally that has to be remedied with a calorie increase that doesn’t happen post surgery. I also know that leptin and ghrelin play a huge role in starvation mode as well, but those areas of the stomach that produce the most are removed with VSG.
  6. I know stall threads are the most common type of post here, so I won’t delve too deep into my current situation other than I am 4 weeks out and have been exactly the same weight down to .2lbs for 8 days now. My question is: does anyone have a scientific answer as to why this happens? It appears that this would violate the law of thermodynamics completely. Are stalls a form of starvation mode, and if so, how are we to work past them given calories are barely increased on the “normal” section of the diet? I spoke to my NUT and was basically told there was nothing I could do but increase my cardio level. Considering I’m doing 30mins 7 days a week on a 650-750 calorie a day amount, this seems excessive and silly. I barely have enough energy to get through what I’m doing right now, and I know from past experiences that adding in more and more cardio does not work. I’m eating 75-85g of protein a day, taking all my vitamins, water over 70oz, and logging/weighing/tracking all my small meals. I understand I am not something special with this stall, I’d just love more info as to what is physiologically happening to cause this and how it is able to fix itself.

    Trouble With Eggs Post-Op?

The first two times I ate eggs they were rough and I nearly vomited. I seem to do fine now. Eggs are common unknown allergen for many people so it may play a role with digestion and newly sensitive stomach

    Pureed Meats Struggles

I was told by my Bariatric nutritionist that meats did not have to be pureed, but rather chopped finely and moistened with broth, fat free gravy, or low-fat Mayo. As long as you chew properly, the food is pureed before it hits your stomach. Chicken salad and tuna were staples of mine. I also did shredded crock pot meats that were chopped prior.

    Surgery Tomorrow

Good luck, you’ll do great and welcome to the start of your new life!
  10. I am currently 23 days post VSG and down almost 27lbs. I was a complete rockstar with my liquid diet protein, and water goals, but I started the pureed portion last Wed, I was shocked that I had absolutely zero pleasure or “this tastes good” after eating. I’ve been highly surprised by this and have looked up quite a few studies how Bariatric surgery alters hormones in the gut and brain that cause this satisfaction from meals. I was never a large overeater, but I did consider myself a Foodie. My tastebuds have also completely changed and things that I used to love such as coffee and certain protein shakes all taste horrible to me. Has anyone else experienced this? I know some of my meals would normally taste good to me, but everything is completely unappealing and I force myself to eat. Has anyone experienced their tastes coming back to once they once were, or feeling satisfied with a meal? On another note, it appears that some of the studies show that patients that had these taste changes were more successful in the long run keeping the weight off and the total amount lost was higher.

    Multivitamin and nausea

Many people do not tolerate higher levels of Iron in Bariatric vits. Certain types of zinc can also make you nauseous. I personally take zinc piccolinate and use desiccated liver caps for iron and other vitamins along with a B complex pill. It’s annoying to have to take so many pills, but vitamin intolerances are common.

    Scared of losing weight

This post hit home for me. I am very worried about loose and sagging skin. I had a love hate relationship with my body prior to surgery (only 3weeks out now). I spent the most of my 20s competing in women’s fitness and figure competitions and over exercising and strict dieting to keep my weight normal. By my late 20s, my body rebounded with a vengeance and 100 plus lbs came on. As much as I hated my weight, I still looked strong and somewhat in shape despite being 300lbs. Most people on the street would never guess I weighed that much. I chose the surgery not only for look but to feel better. So I try and look at it from that aspect as well. I was almost completely sedentary due to severe back, neck, knee and foot pain and even losing 29lbs so far has lessened that. I already have it in my head and a plan for plastics, but the scars worry me as well. I’ve seen some amazing before and afters on this forum and on social media, but I still get scared that I am not going to be one of those people who has a favorable result.

    Bulging Discs

You cannot cure a herniated or bulging disk from losing weight. You can however make them more tolerable from less load on your spine. Same goes for knees and hips.

    Post-op question

I have a higher pain tolerance and the first two days were rough( I also had a larger hernia repair that contributed to this) . The worst pain was the gas pain in my shoulder and chest, and then I would have bouts of the hiccups that were very painful. Luckily, they do give you pain meds and it did not last. The pain from the incisions was very minimal and I didn’t have any issues eating or drinking. It’s completely worth the few days of discomfort! The hospital will not leave you in agony and you will go home with pain meds.

    Nicotine Test

I’m not a smoker, but I had a full drug panel done twice. Once on a comprehensive bloodwork and urine panel 2 months out, and then again in my pre op labs the week before surgery. Most doctors require this as it’s extremely counter productive to smoke or have drug use before major surgery.

    Pre-VSG doubts?

I absolutely felt the same way before surgery. It was a long process for me to finally be approved with my insurance (7 plus months) and when I finally got the surgery date, I started to not believe that the procedure wouldnt work. I’ve struggled for years to yoyoing between being lean and then gaining 25, 50, 100lbs. The surgery was the best decision I’ve made. I’m only coming up to my 4 week mark in a few days, but I’m down almost 29lbs and feel a lot better physically. You will have doubts and fears. Don’t let them get the best of you! Note* everyone has different experiences when it comes to how one feels after surgery. I had severe pain in the hospital, but once I was home it was completely manageable. Think positively about this and it is a huge change for your health and appearance.
  17. I am hypo and have PCOS. So far I am 3 weeks post surgery and down a little over 27lb. Prior to surgery, the only way I was able to drop any weight at all was to starve myself to the point where I would fast for a day a week. The pre op diet my Nutritionist put me on made me GAIN weight despite my pleas that it was not working. Per my insurance I was not allowed to go over my starting weight for a 6 month period. The frustration and restriction for so long was horrible. Now, it feels like I am finally free! Keep in mind that everyone’s bodies react differently to surgery. If you are on thyroid meds, be sure not to take within two hours of iron or calcium supplements, and 4 hours of antacids, otherwise they will not be absorbed correctly. I would also highly recommend follow up labs for thyroid at 2 months post op to see how your hormones are responding.
  18. This is due to insulin resistance (sign of PCOS as well). Generally the more weight you lose, the less insulin resistant you are. Bariatric surgery also alters/improves several hormones that help improve IR.

    Cardio or Strength Training?

As long as you’re cleared by your Dr, I would start adding in some lifting in that time frame. Nothing heavy or too strenuous and work up if you have not lifted before, I would definitely recommend you have a few sessions with a personal trainer or someone that you may know that can show you proper form to make sure you’re doing the exercises correctly. Also, power yoga can help build some muscle and flexibility while keeping everything body weight if that is something that interests you as well.

No motivation to work out 6 weeks out

Congratulations on your workout! Sometimes the hardest part is starting. I try and consider it part of my new lifestyle and it is part of the game with getting as healthy as possible with the body I want. You’ve got this! 👍🏻

    Cardio or Strength Training?

Body weight exercise are a great start, especially for newbies or someone feeling uncomfortable with traditional lifting. Either way, it’s still incredibly difficult to build muscle mass in a large calorie deficit. Post op patients that are back to “ new normal” eating will see the most gains since their overall calories will be higher.

    Cardio or Strength Training?

It’s impossible to turn muscle into fat or fat into muscle - they are completely different tissues. The problem lies within people who already have a high amount of muscle mass and gain fat as well, which makes them look bigger. Strength training is beneficial for everyone as long as you have clearance from your doctor (normally in the 6-8 week range). Increasing muscle mass increases your metabolism, bone density, and overall healthy look. I see many people who skipped lifting after Bariatric surgery and they tend to have less favorable outcomes when it comes to their “after” build. That said, it is hard to build muscle when you are in extreme calorie deficits post surgery, so there will not be a large change in muscle mass even with good genetics.

    Vaginal Bleeding

I had spotting two days after surgery that continued for 6 days. My cycle is irregular (PCOS) and I’m not on BC. Extreme stress whether physical or mental can cause sudden menstruation.

Protein Bars: What Part of Bariatric Diet?

    Thank you everyone 😊
  25. Surgery was at 8am, I left the next day at 7pm. My Surgeon said this is the earliest he will release post op patients as he wants them to be able to handle two “fulls” meals with no issue before discharge. It felt like an eternity!
