That is what i am most worried about for when i have surgery. I currently drink a ton of Water and love to guzzle it down. Especially right before bed i drink a ton.

Thank you!!! Just looked!!! Will come in handy! It’s so hard, especially right now, to drink tiny sips. I just want to guzzle it down. Several times I have made myself vomit by drinking too fast or too much at one sitting. I actually starting putting a spoon in my Water and every 15 minutes taking 3-4 spoonfuls. Sounds weird, but it works! I did it all day yesterday without getting sick. And now today, I started sipping without, and whoop I was sick!! (And I don’t know about everyone else, it’s not a very nice taste/smell coming up.).

I had sleeve and I feel that my team prepared me for the surgery pretty well. The one thing I didn’t really absorb (although I know that they told me) is how easy it is to “eat around” the sleeve. In other words it truly is only a tool. If you wanted to you could eat a little bit every hour and still get in a huge amount of calories. It really is up to the individual to make better choices. Wish I could explain that to all those that think this is the easy way out.

Exactly this! I did 100+ hours of research before surgery so I felt well informed and fully prepared. But the first time I ate a few pretzels, then a few more, then a few more.... I was shocked. It is SO easy to find the loophole and if you don't really teach yourself to be mindful and do the work of dealing with the emotional stuff that drives mindless/binge eating habits, you absolutely can and very possibly will "out eat" your tool.

Go on youtube. THere are so many of these videos. I probably watched 20 of them from different people who made a video regarding this exact subject. Was very informative.

I am heavily researching getting gastric sleeve surgery, and this forum has been really helpful. I am curious for those who have had the surgery, or any WLS really; what is something that you found out after surgery that you wish you knew about beforehand. Both good and bad appreciated!

I think for me, the one thing I wish they would have taught is “what is a sip versus what is a gulp.” LOL

I was revised from the sleeve to bypass last Thursday due to severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. Within about a month or two of being sleeved, I began developing reflux. It took almost 2 years to consult with a specialist who confirmed that I had developed GERD (and over time the hiatal hernia) due to the sleeve surgery.
Please be your best advocate and speak up if you feel something isn't right. I took very potent PPI's for almost 3 years and that led to damage to my esophagus. I feel so much better already, and I am losing weight as well!

I had some serious energy issues and after my PCP tested, I found I was slighty anaemic. I started taking an Iron supplement in addition to the iron within my bari multi, and within a week I felt better. I still get exhausted by 9 p.m. though, and of course iron causes Constipation, so there's that whole thing too.

I was on a regular dosage of B12; however, I had gone for some time not eating meat or dairy. My B12 dose was meant to be supplementary, not a complete replacement for B12 in food. It wasn't deliberate, I wasn't planning on becoming vegan or anything, I just hadn't had a taste for meat, dairy, or eggs. And my supplement wasn't enough under those circumstances.

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. For me, the first 9 months or so (after the initial recovery) were great. I was never hungry, and I had a lot of energy even though I was eating very little. But then things started to change. I felt weak and fatigued all the time. My resting heart rate was less than 40 beats per minute, which my surgeon said was probably because my heart was used to having to work much harder when I was carrying 200 extra pounds, and now that I'm so much smaller, my heart has slowed way down to compensate. My surgeon and the cardiologist to whom he referred me said the bradycardia was probably the cause of the weakness and fatigue, so you might want to get that checked out if your resting heart rate has decreased a lot.
Like you, I look much better, but I feel worse than I did before surgery, when I was super morbidly obese. To make matters worse, people keep congratulating me on my weight loss and condescendingly say, "I bet you FEEL better, too!" No, actually, I feel worse than I've ever felt in my life, but hey, at least my body looks socially acceptable now! On the other hand, I was in bad shape before surgery, with hypertension and diabetes that probably would have just kept getting worse if I hadn't lost the weight, and now I no longer have either. It's hard to say whether I'm better or worse off overall than I was before the surgery, but I think it's useless to think about it that way because I made the best decision I could based on what I knew at the time, and there's no going back now.

I've lost 35 lbs since surgery and almost 85 lbs overall. I can walk faster and fit in an airplane seat better, but I don't feel "good." I don't have more energy and I'm hungry all the time and I'm uncomfortable every time I eat. I'm always afraid I'm going to throw up because I'm nauseous a lot. I always had plenty of energy, but now I'm weak and dizzy all the time. I can't even lift a suitcase into the overhead.
I'm sort of wishing I hadn't had this surgery. Maybe because I had such high expectations?

Since I am now halfway between my heavy weight and my goal weight, I thought I'd show myself. I lost 26 lbs. on my own, then 9 lbs. on the pre-op diet, and 41 lbs. so far since surgery (five weeks ago). I only "see" the changes when I look at before-and-after pictures. I'm starting to see what I'll look like further along and I ain't mad about it.

76 lbs. down, 76 to go.

I had been hovering around 202 and boom today 199.8!! I haven't been under 200 since high school and honestly thought it was impossible.
I really don't have anyone to share this success with since only my boyfriend knows I had surgery but wanted to thank everyone here for your help in getting here. This forum has been a huge help to me and am so excited to be only 15lbs from goal!!

I'm sorry you're going through this. It sounds like your surgical team definitely failed you. The surgery does change your relationship with food forever. While your surgeon may have overstated things by saying the effects of the surgery only last 18 months, it is true that over time your sleeve will be less intrusive. The restriction eases somewhat and you get to the point where you can eat a small but regular-sized meal with no problem. I'm 2 and 1/2 years out from surgery and I don't have to take tiny bites or sips anymore.
As far as eating "normally", that's not something most bariatric patients aspire to because that's what got us obese in the first place. If you really did go back to eating exactly how you did before, you'd simply gain all the weight back. My program had so many educational requirements that it got irritating, but I can see from your story why they are necessary. I hope you find some peace, particularly as time passes and your sleeve matures. God bless!

I'm so sorry you're having such difficulties. It sounds like you should definitely reach out to a bariatric therapist. I'm also having a lot of difficulties because I didn't expect to be hungry all the time. I hope you can find some healing.

I hate it, i had second thoughts going into surgery and was treated like i was having pre op nerves. I woke up hoping for some reason the surgery hadnt been done and i spiralled from there to the point of being suicidal. I have been beating myself up over why on earth did i think this was a good idea, why didnt my gp explain how serious the surgery was and why wasnt i given other options, why did the surgeon say " the effects of the sleeve only last 18 months then its up to you" my mind heard in 18 months you will be back to eating and drinking normally, why didnt my dietian say you are not ready for this when answering her questions, why didnt she explain in full detail how eating and drinking would change forever. I spent 8 weeks on my sisters couch curled up in the foetal position bearly eating, having anxiety and panic attacks. I am getting better though i am back at work, i cry at least once a day over what i have done to myself and its hard to incredibly hard. I find no joy or pleasure in food any more its a chore to eat and drink. So i guess i am dealing with lots of problems i wish i hadnt had the surgery as i would much prefer to be fat and happy than slim and miserable 😢😢

@moonbeam, if you're talking about Shirataki noodles, IMHO, if you keep your expectations reasonable, they are ok in some cases. They need to be rinsed VERY well and then I heat them in a non-stick pan to further dry them. They take on the flavor of whatever you make with them. I like them best as spaghetti as they take on the flavor of the Pasta Sauce.

Oh yeah and my feet dont hurt anymore when I walk. Plantar arch problems all just gone. Also running to catch the bus doesnt leave me light headed and huffing for an hour after and stairs are no longer dreaded torture devices.

I have two that are the same. My son came and gave me a big bear hug and said mommy I can reach all the way around you now!!! I can touch my hands together.

My boyfriend has never said much accept being super supportive in all I try to accomplish but after my son said that I noticed how much better I fit in his arms. Cuddling has never felt better as he can easily wrap his arms around me.
