    Post VSG Hair Loss

It does depend on your hair and how you want it styled. I don't like to put products in it so I just spend about ten seconds (maybe less) brushing it and let it air dry. I make it clear to my hair dresser that I'm NOT willing to spend time on it. The short hair bed head thing is real, but I can take a 3 minute shower in the morning and it's fine. My whole morning routine takes less than 15 minutes (at least it did prior to VSG.... now it will take longer to eat and drink breakfast).
  2. I have lost 50 lbs in the 7-8 months I've been preparing for surgery, although only a few pounds on the actual pre-op diet. I have read that this will make my weight loss slower or less after surgery. If you lost a lot (like about a third of what you want to lose) before surgery, did you lose slowly or less out of surgery? I have set my goal at 150, but ideally I'd like to get to a "normal" BMI below 140, but I'll see what feels good when I get there. My surgery center said I can expect to get to about 170-180, which is pretty depressing.

One week post-op — feeling hunger

But you will have some hunger because you do need calories to function. You are a human still! You still need to eat. I'm eating about 350 calories a day, and if I don't eat every 3 or so hours, I feel hungry!
  4. I forgot that I also used my headphones for about an hour.

    Post VSG Hair Loss

I've had short hair at my highest weights. I am not a big fan of when women have long hair and put it up in a messy bun or sloppy pony tail and I don't like when my hair is in my face, and I think having short hair looks a lot better on a fatter face, so I've had short hair my whole adult life. Takes way less time to deal with.

Who lost a lot before surgery?

My pre-op diet was only 14 days. However, when I decided I wanted to pursue bariatric surgery, I decided to practice a semi-bariatric diet of lower carb, higher protein, and I ended up losing almost 50 lbs before the pre-op diet started. I only lost a few pounds on the pre-op diet.

    Post VSG Regrets?

I'm only one week out, so I don't have much experience, But I was really nervous about being dehydrated, because I also drank A LOT of liquids before surgery and was worried about the "tiny sips" I kept reading about. Yes, the first few days it was terrible... tiny sips would be painful. But now a week out I am able to take whole mouthfulls of water. I can't guzzle down a whole water bottle or anything, but it's a huge improvement in just a week. I'm getting well over 64 oz of water a day now, and I am in no danger of getting dehydrated at this point.

One week post-op — feeling hunger

Your doctor did not prescribe omeprazole or something similar? Can you check your discharge papers and make sure you have all the meds that were prescribed? I feel like I have a demon roaming around in my chest and gut sometimes but it's not hunger; usually it's from taking sips that are too big or after I have to take all my pills at night. I do feel hunger pangs if I don't eat every few hours, but this is to be expected since I don't eat much at once and I'm only eating a few hundred calories a day. Did the surgery team or your endocrinologist adjust your insulin to account for the lowered food intake? Don't start thinking you made a mistake! You need to take in some food not to feel hungry you still have a stomach; albeit a smaller one. I found the first week really rough; now it's still rough at 7 days out but SOOOOO much better.

    Maisey's Musings

I just had my surgery a week ago, but my parents were here this week and we went through all my clothes from the last time I lost a lot of weight (through diet and exercise) six years ago. I thought I had gotten rid of them all, but I still had a lot left. They're mostly size L-XL. I got rid of some I don't like any more, and honestly, most of the others don't work for the way my life is now (they need to be ironed and I travel all the time now). I'll decide whether to get rid of the rest later. We also got rid of some of the clothes that are too big now since I'd lost 50 lbs during my time preparing for surgery. That wasn't much. For now since I'm still sore from surgery I want the big t-shirts. I am not willing to expend any time or energy trying to sell or "find good homes" for these. I just had my dad take them over to the clothing donation bin across the street. If I was more "myself" (i.e., not on lifting restrictions) I would probably try to deal with it in a better way, but I just couldn't focus, and my parents were being so helpful!

    Yay

    I'm 7 days out and I'm down 7.2 lbs.
  11. I brought a bunch of stuff recommended by people on this site, and I only used the following: iphone 6 foot cord and wall adapter spare pair of underwear I was there just about 24 hours. I barely was awake and they gave me enough blankets that I didn't need to use the one I brought. I was too nauseous to brush my teeth and too unsteady to take a shower. I wore the clothes I came in. I didn't need the biotene or chapstick because they kept making me drink small amounts of ice water before I could leave. They gave me another hospital type gown to wear on my back so I didn't need a robe (I don't even own a robe).

    Anxiety vs. Fear

I agree with weighing everything out and tracking everything that goes into your mouth. I have only ever been successful at losing weight when doing this. I like MyFitnessPal. The free version is fine, but it does have a lot of ads. When you say "the one meal a day"... what does that mean? Are you only eating one meal a day? What are you eating the rest of the day? Were you told to only eat one meal a day? Make sure you are getting enough fluids Water, decaf coffee or iced tea, crystal light or similar beverages, diet juice (5 calories per 8 oz serving) etc. I drank about 120 oz or more when I was trying to lose weight prior to surgery. It gave me something to do and kept me more full.

One week post-op — feeling hunger

I am now one week out and I feel hunger often, too. I am taking omeprazole. i find that I need to eat every few hours, but I am fine with a yogurt or half a protein shake or some sugar free jello (that's about all I'm allowed on my plan as I'm still only allowed liquids for another week). It also helps to drink a lot, in small sips (so it doesn't hurt). It's hard when you see other people eat "real" food too, but that' not what causes the hunger - to me, that's just wishing I could have what they're having. The hunger is just hunger, unrelated to cravings (i'm having cravings for cheese, but I'm also having true hunger).

Who lost a lot before surgery?

The hospital prescribed senna and a stool softener. When I hadn't had a BM after a week, they suggested a laxative suppository and miralax. I did both and had a BM a half hour after the suppository. I am now doing miralax every day plus the senna and stool softener. I just started magnesium citrate and will stop the senna and stool softener as they were only prescribed for two weeks. The hospital suggested I needed to increase my fluids and I've now been able to get above 64 oz of fluids the last few days and it's been better. I'm trying to get more activity too, but my incision hurts when I walk. Good luck!

Who lost a lot before surgery?

Thanks! This is the first day I'm back on my computer. I am slowly feeling less pain, although it's still more pain that I expected (whoever described this as "discomfort" was either joking or a masochist). It hurts unless I am lying down. I have more hunger than I expected and I'm taking the omeprazole as directed. I finally had a BM after a week!!! It took four different types of laxatives. My surgery was Monday and I took my last opiod on Thursday. I think I took three total after coming home from the hospital.
  16. What are some things you are looking forward to doing/being able to do AFTER you've lost a significant amount of weight? OR What are some things you've finally been able to do now that you've lost a significant amount of weight? I finally got my surgery date and I'm having a hard time thinking of goals for myself, because I'm able to do most things I want to do, other than fit into "standard" size clothes and walk up several flights of stairs without getting winded. There are things I'd like to be able to do "Better" - fit "better" in an airplane seat, walk faster, do harder hikes, etc. Did anyone else have this issue?

    Weight loss

Have you decided you want to have surgery? If so, are you planning to pay out of pocket or does your insurance cover it? Have you gone to your primary care doctor to get their recommendations? Have you researched the different types of procedures? Which procedures are offered will depend on the surgeon you see (the place I'm going only does sleeve and bypass). It is very hard to lose weight and if you have a lot to lose (like 100 lbs or more) the only way it's going to happen and that you'll keep it off (still not a sure bet) is through surgery. It's not "the easy way out;" it's still very hard. There are a lot of doctors visits and nutritionist, psychologists, etc before you can have surgery. I suggest checking out https://asmbs.org/ to start your research.
  18. I used to get these leering comments and stares from men... when I was 12. Before I gained all my weight. I hope that after losing weight my short hair will be enough to keep them away. Is that wishful thinking? I don't think I can handle unwanted attention from men again.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

It's totally normal to have stalls and even bumps up a few pounds in any weight loss journey. Just follow your plan, drink your fluid, etc. Look at the trends over time, not just in one week or a few weeks.

    New here

I'm September 13. I'm so excited and scared and nervous!! What are you all doing to keep distracted? I'm watching a lot of TV, which is really unusual for me. My parents are coming into town this weekend to help me after surgery.
  22. Don't rush through the psychological evaluation. You don't want to have to deal with binge eating or other food issues a few months after surgery and end up gaining all the weight back. If you want to find a different therapist, talk to your surgery center about your concerns, and ask for someone else, but don't lie. It's not in your best interest. You basically have one shot at this surgery and losing re-gain is not easy based on what I've read. Set yourself up for success.
  23. Are you taking any sleeping pills? Other new medications? Sometimes certain medications can cause this.

One week post-op — feeling hunger

Also, not everyone has their hunger go away. Some people just find their hunger changes. At least from what I've read/heard. You still have a stomach and it still needs SOME food.

    Regret and Depression

I have read that in the immediate post-op period, regret is really common, but it gets better. Definitely talk to your surgery team and a therapist if possible. My surgery center warned us that we may feel sadness at giving up food as a coping mechanism. Maybe that is part of what is going on for you? I am sorry you're struggling. I hope it gets better soon!!
