    September Surgery Buddies!!

I couldn't do chicken except ground chicken (like ground beef but chicken - ground turkey is fine too). I've had no issues with beans, and they've been a staple for me. Haven't tried lima beans, but kidney, black, and chickpeas have all been fine. Eggs have been okay and tuna fish or broiled salmon has been fine. The only thing that didn't work was chicken, but it wasn't really in a sauce. Maybe I'll have to try again
  2. You've lost 101 lbs!!! That's fantastic WooHOOOOOO!

    Slow weight loss

I've lost 18 lbs in 4 weeks, and I thought I was doing great. I don't think you're a slow loser at all!

    How many calories a day?

Carp. I'm 4 weeks out and I'm already at 600-700 calories a day and still hungry all the time. I have half a protein shake mixed with 10 oz decaf iced coffee for a start, then 150-250 calorie meal portions of eggs, beans, ground meat, ricotta bake, that are all low carb and medium fat, then a different one of those for lunch, then a snack of a protein shake or light and fit (80 calorie) Greek yogurt for a snack, and the same portion of whatever food for dinner. Last night I added sugar free hot cocoa made with high protein 1% milk because I couldn't take being hungry and I was also cold. I am drinking over 70 oz of liquid and protein is over 60g a day.

    New here

I only lost a few pounds on the liver shrinking diet. But do make sure you're getting enough protein. Did you lose weight prior to the pre-op diet? I lost almost 50 lbs prior to that diet, so I wasn't expecting to lose much, and I didn't. Also, make sure you're weighing yourself at the same time (I like first thing in the morning, nekkid, right after peeing) so you are getting comparable results. And you may have had more sodium prior to the second weigh in, or your period, or been more dehydrated, or any number of things. Don't panic! You will lose more after surgery, as long as you follow the instructions.

    poop question after surgery

It's very common to have constipation after surgery. I just looked it up, and the name for the product I use here in the US is called Movicol in Spain. You need to take it for a few days until it works. I take it almost every day, but sometimes every other day. If you don't GO for many days (like 5 or more) you may need a laxative suppository, which will work in about 30 minutes. You will notice that you will not poo as frequently as you did prior to surgery because you are not eating as much and you are not getting much fiber. Buena suerte!

    dehydration

While I generally agree with @The Greater Fool, I've been told at least 64 oz post-bariatric surgery as you are losing weight because when the body is breaking down fat it uses water, so we need to drink more. Also, sometimes after surgery people don't drink enough because it's hard to swallow. I don't know how far out you are from surgery or if you actually have not had surgery yet, as your profile suggests. Some people find that drinking more curbs their hunger. This doesn't work for me, maybe it does for you. Some people will drink absolute gallons of water in a day; that can actually be dangerous as it throws your electrolytes out of whack. If you're not being extreme in either direction, not drinking a lot of alcohol, not running in today's Boston Marathon, not thirsty, you're probably gonna live.

    Weight loss expectations?

Yeah, I'm shopping from the clothes that were in storage from when I had lost 100 lbs 7 years ago. I had almost gained it all back by January, when I started this process. I'm down almost 70 lbs now (18 since surgery 4 weeks ago), and a lot of the smaller clothes are fitting again, although I had given away a lot so I bought some stuff from a thrift store and a few basics from LL Bean and a new winter coat from Lands End. My winter coat from last year is a 3X so I ordered an XL, which is my current size.
  9. That's amazing. I'm just 4 weeks out from surgery. I've had a bit of a struggle with being hungry all the time, but I'm hoping I will still be successful. I've lost 18lbs in the last 4 weeks since surgery, so I'm happy about that. I'm also feeling a bit irritable but our bariatric therapist can't see me until November, so I'm just seeing my regular therapist tomorrow. Congrats on your success!

    Weight loss expectations?

I expect plateaus. I have had a few times where I've actually gained .4-.6 of a pound or stayed the same for a few days and I'm only 4 weeks out. That's true no matter how you lose weight, surgery or any other way. I don't know how long it will take me to get to whatever weight my body decides to settle at, but I know that having lost about 18 lbs in the first month, it will just get slower from here on out!

    Tracking weight loss

I use MyFitnessPal (free version). I've been using it since 2011 and I really like that I have that history there. You can create and save recipes you make, you can get macros, look at your weight over time, etc. There's a lot more it can do that I haven't figured out because I'm not great with technology.

    3 weeks post op

I would definitely reach out to your surgery center, just to be safe. You also need to make sure you're not dehydrated. Hope you feel better soon!
  13. I'm not someone who tended to use straws before surgery (4 weeks ago). Today I had to have a CT scan to check for gallstones and they gave me 500mL of contrast to drink, with a straw in it. I looked at the bottle and it seemed like it wasn't intended to drink from directly, so I used the straw. I had no issues, other than the taste of the drink. I hate paper straws but I think if I need to use a straw for a particular reason and I'm given a plastic one, I'll use it.

    Worried about intake

30g of protein X 4 calories per gram is 120 calories. There's some other stuff in the premier protein drink, but most of the calories come from protein. Hope you feel better soon. Did they give you Zofran (ondansetron) or a scopalamine patch?
  15. I also spent one night in the hospital (sleeve) and took two weeks off from work. I work from home, but that was the right amount of time. I did check email every day the second week off and it was tiring and hard to concentrate, but by the end of the second week I was feeling pretty antsy. When I went back to work I was tired and had to lie down once a day during the first few days, but work was also slow that week so it wasn't an issue (and part of that might have been a bit of boredom). If you have any complications, you might need more, but if money is an issue, and your job isn't too stressful, you could probably do less. Good luck!

    I've gained weight...

Very inspirational. I would like to start doing weight training once I'm cleared to lift weights.

    Return to work

That sounds really challenging. What about bean based dishes? They won't smell bad heating up. I have been living off them right now, as it's the only thing that has been tasting good. Or, Greek yogurt or soup with protein powder? Good luck!
  18. I was sleeved the same day as you and was 231 the day of surgery. Today I was 213. I'm already on solids (since the 28th) and I've still be losing quickly. For me it has not been easy however. I'm hungry all the time and I'm having a lot of back pain, which is unusual for me.
  19. When you say you regret it, what do you mean? Do you have nausea or vomiting? Diarrhea? Or emotional symptoms like anxiety that you will gain weight, or physical symptoms like shakiness?

    Hospital Bag

I kept trying to ask the nurses for help and it would take three tries each time! I would not bring a laptop because it could fall from your bed and break if you fall asleep. I didn't feel like watching movies. I just slept and was on my phone a bit.

    Puréed Phase 2

We were specifically told "no one can tell you how much to eat". I definitely feel restriction with eggs and refried beans, but I still feel hungry after eating. It just hurts to eat. I talked to my surgeon yesterday and he was concerned that I was feeling hungry all day.

    Fluctuation and sudden weight gain

That could be normal fluctuation, or it could be a trend, hard to know. Try changing up your diet (more fluids, fewer or more calories, more protein, more veggies, different/more exercise) and see what happens. Sometimes our bodies just stay in one place until we shake it up a bit. Try a different exercise routine like a free YouTube work out or go mall walking for a change. I'm also in MA and I find walking at the mall gives me a change of scenery and since the weather here is unpredictable it helps (of course, walking is about all I can do right now, since I can't swim until my incisions heal, but if you're able to run, I wouldn't suggest doing that in a mall!).

    Puréed Phase 2

I was also not given an "amount" to eat, just told to eat till I was satisfied. I can't eat that much in one sitting without getting pain in my chest and back, but I think it varies person to person. I was told not to eat for more than 30 minutes in one sitting, because if you eat so slowly that your stomach empties out then you're basically grazing so it's defeating the sleeve... however, I am hungry after the small amount I eat. I can eat 1-2 eggs worth of egg product or 1/3 cup of refried beans, but I may be hurrying to get it all down in a half hour so I may still be eating too quickly. Curious to see what others say.
  24. I just noticed this this morning lying in bed! I was confused for a second.
