    Sleeve or Bypass Regrets?

I had the sleeve and I did not lose as much as I had hoped. I often wonder if I would have done better with the bypass. I went with sleeve for a reason though (I’m on psyc meds that sometimes tend to not absorb as well with bypass) and I was also warned that I may not lose all my weight because of my meds so it’s really hard to say if I would’ve been better off with bypass. Guess I’ll never know. I think that they both very good surgeries that can get you down to a healthy weight even if it’s not the exact weight we would dream of.

    Always cold!!!!

I am so jealous. I am over a year and a half out and pretty sure I have lost all I am going to. I sweat. Alot!! and really hoped this would get better as I lost weight but it hasn’t. At first I typed this big long message to tell you guys how much it suck’s to sweat all the time but it felt like it belonged In the rants and raves forum so I deleted it, lol. I guess I really can’t say for sure but I honestly think I would prefer being cold to being hot all the time. Maybe it’s a grass is always greener type thing.

    Switch Surgery Oct17

Yea the reality is you’re probably going to be fine but maybe not if you slip again. Part of what’s good about the pre op is that you get to prove it to yourself that you can do it post op cause like liveaboard15 said, you can seriously I just yourself from one little slip post op.

    Pre-Op Constipation

Benefiber is what my team suggested to prevent constipation and it worked for me. I was instructed to use milk of magnesia to get things moving and start the fiber once it did. That combination Worked for me.

    Smelly farts

Okay I was worried about this pre surgery so I did some research and they actually have filters you can put in your underpants that help with the smell of farts. Hopefully this is only a temporary issue but that doesn’t mean you have to just deal with it. They are activated charcoal. I never had reason to try them so I can’t say if they actually work but I’m guessing they are worth a try.

    Pre-Op Constipation

I did not have any issues on the pre op but did have a little trouble going post surgery. I was already on stool softeners but I added a dose of milk of magnesia and that did the trick. The next day I started with the soluable fiber as a preventative and that worked like a charm until I got to around a normal serving size and weaned myself off of that too. Been regular ever since.

    4 weeks post op

I’m kinda surprised your dr didn’t offer you some sort of anti nausea meds to help With your symptoms. Regardless, I would ask for something. Also know if you begin to get dehydrated the nausea may increase (may not but dehydration does cause nausea). As suggested, try all different fluids at all different temperatures and do your best but if you start to see any signs of dehydration (such as darker urine) contact your team and ask them if they can arrange for fluids. The NP at my clinic was able to arrange for me to get them as an out patient.

Night time and my fat brain wants to eat.

I seem to want to snack after dinner as well and I try to eat things that are very low calorie like popsicles or pickles depending on what I am craving. If you are actually hungry of course a protein snack would be your best option.

    Fitness watch.

I am just gonna suggest if anyone wants to get an Apple Watch to look out for it now through the holiday season. Mine was purchased at a steal a few years ago at Target during this season and I just noticed that they are already starting their Black Friday deals now. Best part is, starting now with holiday pricing if it ends up getting marked any cheaper you just bring in your receipt and they refund the difference.

    SO SCARED

Not everyone loses hair. I didn’t. And for those who do it’s not like they lose big chunks of it or anything. It’s like the same hair that would’ve fallen out probably the next season or whatever just falls out sooner. And new hair is still growing, just not as fast as you lose it so it does thin some. From what I was told only things that help are to stay on top of your vitamins and protein. I was able to do my protein from the very beginning so that could’ve played a part in why I didn’t really lose any?? Many females consider partial wigs or extensions before surgery (I know that extensions were my plan), but so far I haven’t really Heard of anyone actually getting them? Maybe the loss is not as dramatic as expected, I’m guessing. I have heard of a few people cutting their hair shorter and coloring it a lighter color though and that seems to help give the illusion of fuller hair. if you had more time I would strongly urge you to go try some human hair extensions (if your female or have longer hair). They are pretty simple to use and can be cut and dyed to match your hair if you can’t find them in your exact color. They are actually kinda fun and they add volume and length if you want to add length. I purchased mine at Sally’s beauty supply and took them to my hairdresser to teach me how to put them in. For shorter hair I know they have hairpieces that I assume have gotten better over the years as well. Maybe google extensions or partial wigs/ hair pieces and look for before and afters. The focus of the extensions may be on the length because that’s the primary use but it depends on how many you add how much volume it adds. You can use two packs and add twice the volume.
  13. Boy talk about bad timing. Did you talk to your family doctor or just your surgeon? I ask cause they have a medicine now that lessens the severity of covid if you take it early enough. It’s mostly for people who are in the high risk category but I wonder if you would qualify because you are recovering from surgery as well as being overweight. Your doctor may not think it’s necessary but you may want to ask. I THINK they said you have five days to start it or it doesn’t help.

Tips on what to expect first few weeks

My only real advise for anyone having surgery is to just stick to your plan and TRUST the process. Especially for the first month post op your weight may do weird thing (stall or even go up) but this process does work. Just trust it and the weight will come off.

    8 weeks out and scared

Only you know WHY you made the choices you made. If you don’t know why or are worried you will do it again you may want to consider a bariatric therapist to get to the bottom of things and get some coping tools that keep you from turning to food. I have heard many people on here swear by how much they have helped them. I know that I struggle with emotional eating and I am having a really hard time keeping my weight off (I am a year and a half out). I do not have anyone who specializes in bariatric therapy near me, unfortunately, but really wish I had the option to see someone. You have come so far already. Give yourself every tool available to you to succeed. You can do this.

I agree with most of this but I was told no gum so you may want to check with your team on that one just in case.
  17. I agree with spartan maker. Your symptoms are such common ones of so many possible issues but your team will know the right questions to ask to narrow the source of your issues down to a specific concern or do tests to get to the bottom of things.

    Terrified and thinking of cancelling

Do yourself this favor and stick to your pre op diet until surgery day anyways so you can really think this through. I think you are just having last minute jitters. I had sleeve so I can’t really speak to dumping other than only about 30% of bypass patients dump to any degree and many of them who do can still have sweets and fat just in much smaller portions. Once you are back to regular food, traveling and eating out shouldn’t be an issue (it is also doable during the staged return to eating it will just take some planning). You will eat smaller portions, but you will be able to eat most of the same foods you eat now (I can tolerate everything I ate before). You will of course make healthier choices the majority of the time and eat smaller portions but I eat at restaurants all the time. In terms of catching up with friends over dinner I think you will be an even better dining companion because you will be less focused on the food and more on the conversation. I go out with my best friend now and I have noticed that our conversations tend to go deeper and our lunches run longer but I actually think that’s kinda cool. As for the glass of wine, teams seem to be all over the map about when or if they allow alcohol again. My team was fine with it after 3 months but of course it’s empty calories so everything in moderation. I honestly think you are starting to morn the loss of food a little and that’s not uncommon. If you find that you really have a hard time with all this you may want to consider a bariatric therapist. As I’m sure you have heard, the surgery will fix your stomach but it takes some work on our part to fix our brains and that’s a very important part to being successful with all this. And if you really aren’t ready, there is no shame in rescheduling. This is a major surgery and only you know if you are ready.
  19. I didn’t have ANY gas pain. Of course I had very little pain overall. I have heard a few others like me that didn’t have it. I even asked the NP at a follow up if they did something different on me so I didn’t get my stomach filled up with the air or whatever and she said they use it on everyone but it doesn’t always get trapped. A friend of my aunt who told me about the surgery had the same dr and had horrible gas pain so it’s not the doctor.

    No medical support

Have you seen those bed wedges? It helps you sorta sit up a little in bed. Would that help? They sell them at medical supply but sis on Amazon. If nothing else it should make it easier to get into and out of bed.

    No medical support

I’m so glad you got your fluids and that someone is going to report those two. It’s not like retail where not doing your job well just inconveniences people a medical professional can actually cause people harm. They have a much bigger responsibility to do the right thing.
