stick to your clinic's eating plan as carefully as you can, especially the first few months. I read posts on here a lot about people pushing the envelope, and that's a slippery slope to go down. In time, you'll be able to enjoy most if not all of the foods you currently enjoy (in smaller portions, of course), but let the program and your new tool work its magic during the weight loss phase. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lose a huge amount of excess weight - the first year after surgery will be the easiest time ever to do that - so take full advantage of it!!

Hi. I'm glad your surgery went well. As for laying down with pain and burping, yes I had that too. I found that propping a few pillows so I had my head and shoulders elevated quite a bit helped. I wouldn't drink anything two hours before bed. Even the Protein Drinks give me heartburn. I put a heating pad on low up higher to soothe (so it wasn't around my incisions.) Also I would take gas ex. It wasn't perfect but helped. Everyday the pain and discomfort seemed to gradually go away. I'm sleeping with no discomfort now. It's only been a week since my surgery.

Hi there, I listen to a podcast called Half Size Me, which has changed the way I think about weight loss. One of the things I’d recommend is using the free Happy scale app, which gives you an average weight, so you can track even small decreases over time. Then focus on losing a pound a month - it will take you 2 years, but 2 years will pass and you’ll either be where you are now cycling the same 5 lbs, or 22 lbs less. It’s just about small, but consistent changes - so not giving up when it seems like the scale isn’t budging, since it might just be inching down. Good luck!

I'm 48 hours out from surgery today, with tomorrow a travel day. As everyone has noted, I'm excited and a wee bit nervous, though not much. I'm just ready. I've done some serious work this past few weeks, both with the pre-op diet and with getting my mind ready. I've been journaling and reading The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery which was recommended by a friend. It's pretty common sense, and covers a lot, mental, emotional and physical. I'm also listening to the guided visualizations and affirmations Kaiser Permanente has on their website for people undergoing surgery. https://healthy.kaiserpermanente.org/health-wellness/podcasts/conditions-diseases/surgery
I'm grateful for all your stories and messages as they remind me I am not alone on this journey and while we all have individual experiences, we're fortunate that these procedures are much safer and more effective than they've ever been.
To to those just starting on the pre-op diet, it is SO worth it to follow the plan. Keep busy, and if you are hungry, drink an extra Protein Shake or some broth. You don't need to starve yourself. Drink as much Water as you possible can so you go into surgery well hydrated.
    Cheers to your health!

Thank you for starting this topic. I'm 56 and my surgery scheduled for May 13th. I feel like I've found my people!!
After yo yo ing my entire life, I'm ready to finally take care of myself.
I have a technical question. How do I enter my surgery date/type and all the stats that are showing below our names? I've tried editing my profile but it doesn't let me enter any info in the stat segment.
Or do you know where I go on this site to read how to?

I had it in my 50s (I'm now in my 60s) and have zero regrets. There are quite a few of us who've had it in our 50s and 60s - and we occasionally see folks on here who had it in their 70s.
I have zero regrets (other than I should have had it years ago) and would do it again in a minute. My recovery, btw, was easy peasy. I had almost no pain and had no issues.
