Taking Pills & Meds Post Op

You may also want to have your doctor talk to the pharmacist about liquid forms of meds. They sometimes are more expensive so be sure to ask about that too.
  2. My doc and the rest of the team said 2 weeks. They stressed this because of the possibility of getting in an accident. The pressure of the belts and steering wheel and air bag against your stomach would not be a good thing. The first week is because of the pain meds. I haven't seen any posts where anyone was on them longer than two or three days, but they want to make sure you aren't drugged up and driving. I hated not being able to drive for those two weeks. I am a single parent and had to find a way for my daughter to get to school. And for me to get where I needed to go when I needed to. Good luck.

    Is something stuck?

I had that pain about a month and a half after being banded. I went to the doctor and he gave me pepcid (liquid because I can't swollow pills, they get stuck). I was having a reaction to the calcium I was taking. (I was taking viactive). Call your doctor or the nurse and get in to see them. It doesn't sound like anything is stuck, when that happens nothing goes down and you start PBing. If you sip water you can feel it go down and come right back up. That happened to me too. But I am no doctor and they are your best bet. Good Luck.

Is my experience normal and what should I do?

VegasGrace, did a doctor tell you that regurgitation is fine? I know the difference between vomiting and reguritation. There really is none. Both are not good for you because you can dislodge your band. Everyone I have spoken with who has a band has said that the doctors don't want you regurgitating, vomiting, or PBing. It all has the same effect, and is not good. Please for your own safety, get into that mind frame. You are right, it is hard to break bad habits but it is something we need to do to reach our goals of being healthier.

    Why are YOU Fat?

I wasn't born heavy, as a matter of fact I was just under 5lbs when I was born. I soon caught up with where I was supposed to be and then passed it. I was a chubby kid and a fat teenager. Fatter young woman and went on the pill and got even fatter. I lost 50 lbs and gained it back with my pregnancy. That was in '97/'98. I finally got tired of being fat and having the doctor tell me every time I went in for something that it was fat related. No matter what it was, it was always fat related. I finally got up the courage to ask her about bypass surgery. I about fainted when she said okay and referred me. Now I am on the right track with the help of my new tool. I fall off the wagon every now and then, especially during the "hell" period, but I got back on it today and I plan to stay on it for a long time!
  6. I use Centrum orange flavored chewables. They are good. Taste like childrens vitamins.

    Questions!!

I too was eating everything in sight! Bandster Hell. I just got my second fill yesterday and still feel like I can eat everything in sight. I did liquids yesterday after the fill and am back on regular food today. I am only able to eat several spoons full of food. Good thing. I think, no, I know that it is all in the head, that "wonderful" head hunger, because I am full, but want to keep eating. I know I need to re-train my mind. Put down the fork between bites, recognize when I feel full, and do push-a-ways. My doc only gives 1cc fills every 4 weeks, so I was in Bandster Hell for at least 2 weeks. My first fill was only 1/2cc because when he gave me 1cc I was too tight and couldn't get the Water down. He did the 1/2cc unfill and I was fine, but ate like a pig for around 2 weeks. I was lucky, I didn't gain any weight but I didn't lose any either. Good luck everyone on your journey.

    Roller Coasters!!!

Two weeks ago we went to California's Great America and I got on just about every roller coaster and ride there. Last week we went to Discovery Kingdom and went on several coasters there as well. Absolutely no pain or discomfort. As a matter of fact I wanted to go on more but the park closed. Go, ride the coasters and revel in the pleasure that you will not have to take "the walk of shame"!!! It is truly a wonderful feeling to know that you can ride and not be looked down on because of your weight. Have a great time!!

    Sliming??!!

Some take childrens vitamins, I take Centrum chewables, orange flavored. There is also a liquid form of Centrum, tastes gross though. They were talking about the gummy childrens vitamins as well. Talk to your PCP about liquid forms of meds you need to take. Mine prescribed a liquid pepcid when I told him I couldn't swallow pills.

    Sliming??!!

When it happened to me it was mostly mucus and saliva. This happenes because there is no where for these fluids to go. If your band is to tight nothing can get through. The same if something gets stuck, which is what happened to me. I was the victim of a stubborn Vitamin and puked for 2 hours. You will know when you are to tight or if something is stuck just by the way your saliva or anything else feels when it tries goes down. I am not sure about anyone else, but it wasn't projectile for me. I know, TMI, but different things happen to different people. You will also find that the same things happen to different people. We share symptoms. That is one of the many great things about this site. You will hear lots of advice from everyone and get terrific support as well. Good luck!

    Gummy Vitamins

Littlefroggy, what kind of chewable calcium did you get? I had a bad reaction to the Viactive and am looking for one to replace it. I also use the chewable Centrum orange flavored and they remind me of baby aspirin. Not bad.
  14. mdgarcia31665

    Sliming??!!

Sliming usually happens when something gets stuck or a fill is to tight. You swallow but it can't get through your stomach, makes a u-turn and you throw up. It is slimy. And pretty gross.

    Migraines

Just curious, but have you tried taking a Beta Blocker for your migraines? I have been getting them since I was about 9. When I was in my late 20's my doc prescribed a Beta Blocker. I only get migraines maybe once every few months if that (it is truly a wonderful thing). I carry around this medication now, it's called Maxalt-MLT and is made by MERCK. They disolve on your tounge and work like you wouldn't believe. I had to take one a couple of weeks ago, as soon as you get that first feeling of a migraine take the medication. I got absolutely no pain or nausea or any other symptoms. Again, it is truly a wonderful thing. Ask your PCP about it. Good luck.

    Worried/confused...where is full?

I was bended in May. I have a friend who was banded Feb. of last year. She has lost well over 130 lbs (yeah her!!) and I mentioned to her that I am eating more since I got banded. She said I am in Bandster Hell. I have had my first fill (6/24) and am still eating, I think, too much. My friend said that I need to slow down, put my fork down between bites, wait a few minutes before taking another bite, eating a meal should take anywhere from a half hour to an hour, and when I start burping I am full. Also to look for the feeling of hunger to be gone, not a full feeling. We are a country of eat till you can't eat any more. We need to be re-trained to eat till you no longer feel hungery, not stuffed. I know that if I feel stuffed I have over done it. Also be careful, if you continue to eat till you feel stuffed, you will begin to gain weight, and we don't want that: We are on the train to Loseville!

require to lose weight before surgery

I was asked by the med doc to lose 20 lbs. This is usually a requirement because being heavy our organs also have fat on them. They need our insides to lose weight as well so they can get to your stomach easily. The liver will also shrink some and make it easier too. I had to lose 20 pounds in one month! I missed the mark by 3 lbs. I was scared my doc wouldn't do the surgery but he saw that I was able to come very close to it and was giving it all of my effort. I worked out 4-5 times a week and changed my eating habits all the way around, that included portion sizes and types of foods. This also helps "train" you for what you need to do after being banded. It is a long hard trip, but once you get there and realize "Hey, I really can do this!" It makes it a wonderful trip that you will gladly take again. Good luck on your journey!

    Vitamins??

For the multi-vitamin I take liquid Centrum once a day and tried the Viactive but had bad results. I got what felt like really, really bad heart burn. I had gurd and never experienced heart burn like that before. I went to the doctor and he put me on liquid Pepcid (talk about expensive 748.00! Thank God for insurance!!) for the pain because pills get stuck (which is why I take liquid centrum).:smile2: I was to take that for a month. I found a chewable Centrum and am going to try that. I was told that we need the calcium supplements, of course, for dem bones!

    throat gurgling?

Throat gugles LOL! Happens to me all the time too. I am always apologizing because I am also in a quiet environment. Starts at the base of the throat and works its way out!

    2nd Fill woes-Too Tight!!!

I was banded 5/5/08 and went out of town two weeks after. I was experiencing some severe shoulder pain on the left side and went to the ER. I had been previously diagnosed with inflamation of the chest wall and upper lung and the pain was very similar. I let my surgeon know about this during my follow up visit. He said to keep an eye on it and let him know if it got worse. A few weeks later I got a vitamin stuck and PB'd for two hours then finally decided to go to the ER. It passed on the way and was very painful; saw the doc anyway. I went for my first fill 6/24 and drank the water. I was too tight and was unfilled by 1/2 cc. During this visit I told the doc about some other pains I was having (pain in the esophogus after eating or drinking anything at all, and pain on my left side near/under my left ribs). Doc said "Oh yeah, you had those crazy pains and went to the ER huh?" During my fill I told him that I could feel it. He asked where and I told him under/near my left ribs and in my esophogus. He said that no one has ever said that they could actually feel a fill before. He said that what I was feeling on the left side was the solution going through the catheter into the band and what I was feeling in my esophogus was the band actually filling. "I guess you really can feel what's going on in your body." I have a pretty good sense of humor and can take quite a bit before I fly off the handle. We know our bodies better than anyone else, even if they are doctors. Allowing you to PB for 5 hours is unacceptable, especially when they don't want you PBing at all. Then to be cynical and threatning to not re-fill you is even worse. They get paid to do this regardless of how many times they see you. If they don't want to do it they need to go into another field. I would consider getting another surgeon, then consider filing a complaint. No one should be treated like that, even if we are a little nuts:rolleyes:. Good luck with your future appointments and good luck to everyone who has to deal with this kind of stuff:smile2:
  23. Sorry, a new before picture
  24. So now I'm curious; do you look the same now as you did 9 years ago? Or is this a before picture?
  25. mdgarcia31665

    Do you use straws?

Too much air gets into to your pouch and can stretch it out. The same goes for any carbonated drinks. Although I've heard that carbonated drinks can cause very serious pain, I have not heard that from using a straw.
