GivinItMyALL reacted to Elinor1811 in Don't Want to Tell Family with a Twist
This is my first post, although I've been lurking here for a while. I will figure out my signature and update.
I have read a lot of threads with folks talking about telling or not telling friends, family, co-workers about their decision to have surgery. Everyone's decision is unique to them I believe and I respect that. Maybe someday I will feel differently than I do now.
I have chosen not to reveal it to others aside from two close friends that I knew would be supportive and my husband and children. My father wants to come and visit later this week and he has not been told. There are a lot of reasons, but mostly the reason is that he will share it with others that I do not want to know. I can ask him and he can say he won't tell anyone, but he will share. We've been down this road before.
I am almost 5 weeks out from surgery and doing well. Since he last saw me, I weigh 42 pounds less than I did. It is very noticeable and I really need to buy almost a complete set of clothes at this point. It is one thing to say "I'm eating better and exercising" which is true, but he will be staying with us in our house. I cannot conceal from him how little I am eating or that I am not eating the same things he is. I have racked my brain, but cannot figure what to say to him. I REALLY don't want him to know.
I am struggling anyway because he sprung this on me last night and wants to come later this week. I am not ready for the company really. I have loved having the surgery during the Covid bubble and having lots of time to adjust. I love my Dad but he expects me to cook like Mom did when she was alive and to entertain him, and I am still getting used to my new stomach and all I need to do. But I feel bad saying no. He is my Dad and you never know when you will see someone the last time.
Thank you for your opinions and help. Has anyone else dealt with someone staying with you that didn't know?

I have a super hard time with it as well... used to eat my food in like 2 min flat because of my former career (nail tech... I'd eat between clients real quick). Max I can ever go is about 15 😕 I just do that and call it good.

It’s my one month anniversary of surgery! Oh man I was not feeling great this time last month. I’m glad I’m done with that. I’m feeling great now, no pain anywhere, no problems with getting liquids. In the last month I lost 16.4 lbs, for a total weight loss of 74.2 lbs. I’ve had a stall but I expected that. I know I need to start exercising more. I literally just started soft foods and so far so good, but I’ve not exactly tried a lot.

One thing I will say is I was a bit concerned because I had no restriction whatsoever with liquid after the first week, and that kind of alarmed me. Like everyone says though, it comes with actual food. I feel like it’s in my esophagus when I’ve eaten too much.

Oh, please don't beat yourself up. You're doing fine. I'm not even walking that much and I'm over a month out. I know I should, but... Life. I'll exercise when I can.
Breathe, and just work at your own pace. The stress won't help. Breathe ♥️
What helped me with sleeping was a wedge pillow I got on Amazon to have my upper body elevated a bit, and a firm pillow to press on the front of me when I would try to lay on my side (I'm normally a side sleeper). Now I don't need those things anymore. You'll get there!

Hi, fellow November buddies! Wanted a bit of a snack today, and needed more Protein. I scooped up a bowl of vanilla Two Good yogurt (I can't do the other SF yogurts for some reason, but probably any vanilla one would work), added a scoop of unflavored protein, and then a tiny squirt of orange tangerine Mio. Was like a melted creamsicle. Really yummy! Just in case anyone needs something different ☺️

Thank you all for your honesty. I'm in a bad way, I'm so done with recovery. 15 days post op and I have a huge painful knot under my large incision and side stitch pain on the right. Not sleeping well because of the pulling pain. Doc told me yesterday to exercise more and expects me to lose 40 lbs every 3 months until I am down to 140. I haven't weighed 140 since middle school. I hurt physically and emotionally I am spent. I am so sore, I'd rather not start a rigorous exercise routine right now. Walking 20 mins a day is all I've got. I feel like I am behind everyone else....

I had my surgery on June 11th this year. After years of failure at any kind of diet, it became necessary for health reasons.

    +1
We are not one size fits all and everyone will respond differently to the seemingly endless amounts of programs out there.
To the OP: Find what works and try not to beat yourself up if you aren’t fitting squarely into a program or whatever. So long as there is a downward trend over time (and your labs come back fine), then its all good.
Edited to add: of course what works today may not work as effectively a couple months from now. The challenge is to recognize when to maintain the status quo and when its time to re-evaluate and make adjustments.

16th for me as well. Other than ripping a stitch, its been a great recovery. Stitch still hurts but all in all, I feel super fortunate that its gone so well.

Well I had my first bites of food tonight since late October. 2 week pre op liquid diet plus 4 week post op liquid diet made for a loooooong stretch. For my first food I scrambled an egg. No problems at all eating it, def felt full afterwards. Was so nice to not have Soup for dinner.
I am 73 lbs down (15 post surgery) and coming up on my one month anniversary on the 10th. Not losing super fast, but happy to be where I am!

Hey everybody, hope all is well!
I was sleeved on the 24th. After a week of doing really well, I had a pretty rough weekend. 2 cases of what (I assume) was dumping. The first episode was the worst. Had that feeling like right before you puke except I never puked and it lasted a couple of hours. The second episode was diarrhea (wow, can't believe I spelled that word right - I think that's a first!). They were both caused by homemade smoothies, possibly from drinking them too quickly. I really struggle with the sweetness of the packaged ones. Maybe it was the air from the blender. I don't know. I think today I'll just try diluting my Premier Protein (packaged) with skim milk and trying to take little, tiny sips.
I was also just feeling really down and lethargic - had lots of naps. Low calories? Christmas? Bored of this year and all it contains? Who knows!
Today is my first day back at work. (I work from home) I think having work to distract me will be good. I see my surgeon on Wednesday for my first follow-up. The good news is that I've lost about 13 pounds since surgery (30 total, including pre-op diet). So, one of my irrational fears (that this surgery wouldn't work for me) was silly

We did it y'all! Congratulations! Our surgeries are behind us.... time to double down on our efforts as we go through the ups and downs that come with this drastic change in our lives. It's well worth it and we're going to be fine. It's not easy for everyone, but the veterans on this site tell us that it does get better.
My experience has been relatively easy. I've had some moments where the food didn't settle well and caused me heartburn, but fortunately no major issues. The incision sites do bother me from time to time, but I feel that soon enough I'll be able to lay on my tummy. I've been cleared for exercise, but haven't yet started. My arms are looking rather flabby, so am going to do arm weights! I'm in the soft food stage and am looking forward to getting to solid. I have noticed though that food isn't calling me like before. The family had pizza, but I didn't feel deprived. I didn't feel bummed out.
Although I did get annoyed and frustrated at all the changes (e.g. wanted to gulp down my water), I didn't have buyer's remorse. In the short term, it's already helped me with my health issues, so am grateful for that. I think we're all so blessed that we got to have our surgery this month considering that Covid cases are in the up everywhere.
@CelinaLambeth Sorry that you had such a crappy experience. Hopefully the rest will be much more smoothly.
@MommaJay Was your surgery outpatient? My surgeon didn't have me do a fanny pack. He just had me on pain meds, but fortunately by the second day didn't need any so never touched the ones at home.
Does anyone have a specific take on how often to weigh yourself? Do you do it daily, weekly, monthly?

I had my surgery on 11/30, and I'm quite uncomfortable. I have tubes in a couple incisions administering pain meds to the area, so the fanny pack I have to carry around isn't fun. The Protein Water made me dry heave, but plain water is fine. I'm tired and very sore, but I know it will pass. I also got blurry vision, but is returning to normal.

Just joined today. I had my surgery 11/18 and was happy to see this thread!

I have had an easy recovery and am following all my instructions. Am trying to not worry about it but I have only lost about 5 pounds since surgery.

  20. Congrats!

I am 19 days out, and doing better each day! Had a rough start. Down nearly 18 lbs post surgery, but about 37 since October. I am starting to eat more and more things, and it is tolerated well, but still can't eat very much. I am okay with that!

My surgeon wanted me to start my multi at 7 days out instead of 14, since I had some complications. I started the B12 and Calcium at 14.

Both my surgeon and my dietician said tablets and capsules are fine. They don't want their patients taking gummies or softgels, though.

I've been tolerating the multivitamin just fine, thankfully. I did NOT tolerate the Calcium I had, though. I'm now taking soft chews for that.

Since my post decided to duplicate itself, My wife and I had our 2 week follow up today. We have lost just over 30lbs each since our Preop diet started on October 27th. Our journey now continues with the puree stage now.

Hi everyone! I was sleeved on the 18th. My recovery has been pretty straight forward, although on the first few days after surgery I was taking quite a lot of painkillers etc. Yesterday I was feeling quite good and decided to try some scrambled egg (approved by my doctor and dietician) and it did not sit well at all..well actually it didnt sit. It came up. Today I have been back to having some painful swallows as well as such a gurgling tummy and the discomfort kind of radiates to my back. I am unsure if its muscle pain or gas pain at this point. I've spoken to the specialist today and he assured me nothing would have got damaged but just wondering if any of you have had some good days then regressed or if it's mostly just improved? I even started having some hiccups after eating today which made me a bit worried. It's all so unknown and I'm a worrier at the best of times so knowing there can be come complications and going a step backwards in terms of recovery today has me a little on edge 😅

@TracespaceCongratulations! I was sleeved on the 6th and so far things have gone well except for issues with BM. It's so interesting how surgeons/dieticians due post-op differently. There is no one blanket approach. My dietician had me on liquids for two weeks post-op and I'm now on to soft foods. I was annoyed hearing of people who went straight to soft foods after a week or less, but I trusted my surgeon and his team. I'm very fortunate that I was able to handle the stages okay so far. I might have had uncomfortable moments, but they were few and far in between that I don't remember specifics. Except for one, I was having my first bite of soft food that was too dry and apparently not chewed well enough, it was horrible. Felt like the food was going to get stuck with each bite. I then purred my food and I was perfectly fine. I suppose the food wasn't soft enough yet.
Everything does keep getting better. Listen to your body and follow it's cue. Don't push it if it's feeling uncomfortable. After reading these message boards and may others, I realize that following your body's cue are sometimes the best approach.
By the way, I read on some post that for some hiccups is when they know that they're full.
