Yeah I dont want to have more counselling sessions with the one I saw as it was £250 for an hour. If I have to do it I will find the cheapest person I can find lol.

Also glad to hear youre post op! Are you taking other OTC stuff for the gas? I am gonna buy pepto bismal chewables maybe.

I haven't taken anything else for the gas yet other than the colic med the hospital gave me. I've been walking a lot but still have gas so tomorrow I think I'll get some OTC stuff for it. The chewables sound good.

Pre op 1.5 weeks broth and aroma one lettuce with grilled fish/chicken breast then 3 days before skim milk, broth

My pre-op diet was 3 meals and 2 Snacks totalling 800-1000 calories and included what I thought was a lot of carbs. I cut the carbs right down because I was struggling to keep to the calorie limit when I included them. It almost seemed as if the dietitian hadn't road-tested the diet. I had to do it for nearly 3 weeks because I have fatty liver. But I did lose 16lbs on it so that was good!

Hi, I hope everyone is doing ok out there...

After a shaky psychology assessment , its been reconfirmed for the 31st (gastric bypass) provided I find counselling post op.

Counselling is expensive privately but we'll see when I cross that bridge.

My pre op diet is going ok ish ....i am just eating eggs all day for 2 weeks. I really sick of eggs lol.

It's surprising how different the pre-op and post-op diets are from one doctor to another.

My obligatory counselling session was very expensive - they've recommended I have more but I don't have to thankfully. I didn't find it very helpful.

  4. The hungry feeling only goes away after 3 days if you're on a "keto" style diet. My pre-op diet was proper food all specified by the dietitian and included carbs. So the hunger didn't go away and I have been starving hungry for over 2 weeks. I have managed to control myself by knowing that if I haven't shrunk my liver enough by the op date they will start but not be able to do the procedure. I've been drinking lots of calorie free fluids to try to fill up but it only helps a bit.

Hello , just found this site and wanted to say hi . Is there many on here from the UK ? Any area of the forum I should be in ?

I'm due to have surgery on 27th October ( fingers crossed ) by the NHS.

I'm on the liver shrinkage diet now and wondered if I'm only getting 500 to 600 cal a day, would that be an issue ? My nurse advised a 600 cal diet but when the booklet came it said 800 and online it seems to be more 800 and over

    Kind regards

    Hayley x

Hi 🙋‍♀️ I'm also in the UK and my RNY bypass surgery is this Thursday (22nd)! My liver shrinkage diet is between 800-1000 calories and I've been on it for just over 2 weeks already. I'm having the op privately - very difficult to get it on the NHS in my area - but my dietitian provides the same pre-op diet for NHS and private patients. It's not Protein shakes; she gives a full diet plan which includes specific amounts of protein, fruit, veg and carbs. She said quite specifically not to go below 800 calories at this stage.

I found it hard to stick to the 800-1000 cal limit when including all the carbs she put in so dropped some of them, and have also decided from today to go onto liquid (protein shakes) for the last 3 days.

I think all plans are different but tailored to the patient? My pre-op diet is usually for 2 weeks but I was put onto it 4 days early as apparently I have a "fatty liver", so there may be a specific reason why your nurse told you 600 calories a day. You could ring/email them?

    Good luck!

Day 5 post op Still feeling bad. Gas pain is intense and my nausea came back and I vomited. Went to the ER and my blood pressure is 157/80. Super high for me cuz I’m usually low around 110.

    They’re running labs on me

on top of this I’m dealing with a lot of personal drama that’s impacting my recovery :(

Hope you're feeling better very soon 🤗

I am quite familiar with st marys as I work with one of the other hospitals thats part of the trust. But I chose parkside because it was cheaper (I think.)

Ah next thursday? It will go well for you, its a great hospital. I think the only thing to think about is the gas pain and many people here have great tips to help remedy that. I have my pre assessment tests on that day, I hope it goes ok...

My surgery is halloween lol 31st. With this whole covid thing, I hope it doesnt get pushed back...

Yes I'm also concerned about covid cases possibly meaning my surgery is cancelled - my Consultant's PA has told me that the hospital is reviewing things on a daily basis 😟 Good luck with your surgery!

Hey thats great! Mine just came today, I had it before so I know it will taste good. I ordered the cheaper 1kg from Amazon.

I just noticed youre from the UK haha. What hospital are you doing it with ? I am with Parkside hospital in Wimbledon.

Not many people here from the UK! I'm having RNY bypass next Thursday at St Mary's in Paddington. We used to live in west London and I know the hospital well tho we moved a couple of years ago; where we live now is quite rural and not near hospitals, so travelling back to London for the surgery. I have to admit I'm getting nervous now.

    When's your surgery due?

Hello everyone, im new to this. I'm from the UK and scheduled for a roux en y bypass on 30th October.

I have joined here to meet new people and for advice if I need it. Hello to you all!

Hi! I'm in the UK too and due to have RNY gastric bypass on 22nd October (as long as the hospital is still doing non-urgent ops then and not pushed over to Covid cases 🤞). Hope your surgery goes well!

  10. My surgery's next Thursday 🤞and the alert level where the hospital is has just been raised. I spoke to my Consultant's PA this morning and she said that so far all is fine in the hospital, but they're getting daily updates from management and if they start having Covid cases they'll cancel non-urgent operations. So I'd assume most hospitals will be working on this basis. I have to go on Monday for a Covid test and then for the op go in on my own and no visitors while I'm there plus of course wearing a mask etc.

  11. I'm having surgery just before you dal101 and also trying to sort the shakes for afterwards. My Dietitian recommends the Slimfast Protein (along with various other protein shakes) and I have to say I was quite surprised when I bought it to see how much sugar/carbs are in it. I've got a variety of other shakes as well to try post-op so I suppose I'll just have to see what works!

  12. I have a gastric bypass RNY the following Thursday (22nd) and I've been on the pre-op diet for a week. I'm starving hungry too and also feeling anxious about the surgery. Covid means I have to go to the hospital on my own too and no visitors for the 2 nights I'm there - I agree having to be on my own is very daunting. I'm just trying to hold it together by reminding myself why I'm doing this - steady weight gain, yo yo dieting for years, high bp, arthritis, pre-diabetes. If I postpone it now, all routine ops here might be cancelled till who knows when if covid accelerates more, so I think as my decision is made, it's best to just do it now. Good luck!

  13. Surgery on 22nd: I've read as much as I can online, bought various types of Protein Shakes, Protein waters, hot chocolates for liquid diet. I've done a blank chart to use as a daily record of fluids/calories/protein/carbs (I don't get on with myfitnesspal app). I've got together small pots for using in the puree stage and have bought the Vitamins in bulk.

For the hospital stay, I've bought various toiletries plus dry mouth spray & lip balm (I still have more to sort for this). I've been following the pre-op diet to the letter, given up sugar and have been concentrating as much as possible on protein. Also have been taking Multivitamins.

Your plan is what you should follow. Plans are so different that something that was my 'go to' thing may not be allowed on your plan.

If you are eating food, then Protein should be the primary ingredient. Some Doc/Nut's have preferences that are vast different than others.

My plan, protein meant 'meat.' If I went out to eat, it was always easy to find a dish with cooked meat, of which I could take a few bites (AFTER the 6 week puree post-op).

My plan never included Protein Drinks until I was binge running.

    Good luck,

    Tek

    Ok thanks

What pre-op diet is everyone talking about? Mine has plenty I can eat and not all liquid. Can someone post theirs?

I've copied mine below. I've been told to stick to 800 calories per day and couldn't do this if including a carb at both lunch and dinner, so dropped the carb in the evening meal. I asked the dietitian why the diet isn't shakes - she said that they find that people get very fed up with the shakes if they have them both pre and post-op and also that this is designed to get you into the habit of 3 small meals and 2 Snacks. Hope this helps.

"The diet is designed to give you approx 100g of carbohydrate per day. Try to opt for complex carbohydrates as these will help to fill you up more than refined or white bread, rice and Pasta etc. The diet is low in fat and moderate in Protein and low in calories, providing approx 800-1000 kcal.

Breakfast: (15g carbohydrate) : 3 tbsp (20g) of BranflakesTM or fruit & FibreTM or 4 tbsp (15g) of CornflakesTM or Rice Krispies TM or 1 Shredded wheatTM or 1½ WeetabixTM or 5 tbsp (35g) of All BranTM or 25g of porridge oats or 1 slice medium sliced toast with scraping of spread

Lunch: (15-20g carbohydrate): 1 slice medium slice wholegrain bread or toast or 2 ryvitas/ wholegrain crackers or ½ bagel or ½ pitta bread or ½ bread roll or ½ Chapatti

with: 2 eggs or 50g (1½ oz) cheese (no more than 3 portions per week) or 8 wafer thin packet slices of ham/chicken/ turkey or 100 g (4 oz) chicken, e.g. a chicken breast without skin or 100g (4 oz) meat or 100g (4 oz) fish or 100g (4 oz) Quorn,/tofu, or pulses or 100g (4 oz) pulses (including chickpeas, Beans and lentils)

with plenty of vegetables and salad (with fat free dressing if required)

*limit root vegetables to 80g maximum per meal e.g.: turnip, carrots, parsnips, beetroot, swede etc.

*limit sweetcorn to one tablespoon per meal whilst following this pre-operative diet as this is high in carbohydrate.

    Evening Meal: (20g carbohydrate): 180g potatoes (boiled/mashed/roast) or 3 egg-sized (180g) new potatoes or 60g / 2 tbsp cooked rice/pasta

with: 2 eggs or 50g (1 ½ oz) cheese or 8 wafer thin packet slices of ham/chicken/turkey or small chicken breast without skin or 100g (4 oz) meat or fish or 100g (4 oz) Quorn, tofu, or pulses such as lentils/beans/ quick peas

    with

plenty of vegetables/salad (with fat free dressing if required)

Additional allowances throughout the day (40g carbohydrate): two portions of fruit or one portion of 150ml fruit juice, 1/3 pint (200ml) of semi-skimmed milk for drinks and Cereal OR (one small pot (125g) low fat/low sugar yoghurt per day (diet or ‘lite’ varieties), aim for at least 2 litres a day of free fluids i.e. Unlimited Water, tea, coffee, low-calorie squash, low-calorie fizzy drinks

  16. I'm currently on day 4 of the pre-op diet and starving hungry. Not just head hungry! I've never done an 800 calorie diet - I used to be able to lose on 1400 calories - so am finding it very challenging. The thing that's getting me through is the thought that I only have another 15 days of it. Also my surgeon told me about a patient he had who didn't shrink his liver enough - they had to close the surgery without doing the op. I definitely don't want to be in that position.

  17. I'm booked in for 22nd October in London UK! I'll be starting the pre-op diet on Sunday - slightly earlier than the 2 weeks by Consultant's advice. I'm very nervous about the operation, but definitely glad to have found the site. There's very limited information available from my dietitian - and a lot of gaps which I'll have to query with her - so am delighted to have so much experience to access on this site!

The people without problems don't tend to hang around for very long so there definitely is major selection bias at work and some of the problems you might have read about are just your typical issues after abdominal surgery that usually resolve itself within the first few weeks, e. g. gas pain, potty issues, fatigue.

Thanks - that's reassuring to know.

yes, you do have to work at it or you'll gain back a significant amount of weight. The surgery acts more like a strong tail wind - you still do the work, but it gives you a huge boost.

I started off MUCH heavier than you - I had about 15 stone to lose. I am 60 years old. I spent DECADES losing and gaining weight. Four stone would have been one of my more successful attempts - and I would always ALWAYS gain it back. And I had 15 stone to lose. I knew there was no way I would EVER be able to do that on my own, if I couldn't even keep four stone off for more than a few months.

as for Hair loss, some people lose a lot, some lose very little, some don't lose any at all (I lost hardly any). But for most of us, we're the only ones who notice it. And it grows back. I think most "vets" on here will tell you that in retrospect, we wonder why we wasted even one brain cell worrying about hair loss. In the grand scheme of things, the Hair loss was just a minor (and temporary) annoyance. I would take the hair loss any day over almost 400 lbs again. ANY DAY!

Thank you, and congratulations on your weight loss!

I've also spent the last 3 decades gaining and losing weight and it gets to the point where I have no confidence in myself to be able to keep it off even if I do manage to lose it, so in a way I'm condemning the diet as I start it. If it would make it easier for me to keep the weight off then I think it would be worth my doing it. Thanks again!
