Just wondering what everyones experience was like. How much & what did you drink? Did you feel more inebriated than you would have before surgery? How long after surgery did you have your first drink?
I'm only 13days post op but I'd really like to have some wine at a wedding in september....I haven't asked my doc how long I have to wait before drinking yet.

My bypass is tommorow!! Whoohoo!! Finally!! After Covid it was pushed back! I’m ready to get this done. I hear people saying they had to do a liquid pre op diet. I didn’t. I was on a 1000 calorie diet!

Good luck! Focus on being comfy the next few weeks, both in and out of the hospital. When my mom had her sleeve done, she basically lived in lose sundresses for about a month.

    Sending good vibes!
Hospital check list: chapstick, toiletries, own pillow, slippers or slide on sandals, phone charger, wear same comfy clothes home that you wore to the hospital.

Hello everyone, I have found a lot of information and helpful support here. Surgery is tomorrow. June 29th, 2020. I was ordered to do Covid 19 test to clear me for surgery. I was really nervous about the test as I heard and read so many stories saying it hurt. It did not hurt, it was quick, they swabbed both nostrils it was a weird feeling, a bit awkward like a fruit fly going up ur nose, n my eyes watered. I had to do 6 months of nutritionist visits, and since I'm near my goal weight for surgery I was told to do 3 days liquid pre op diet. Reading about how others have done for 1 and 2 weeks on liquid diet has given me strength to do my 3 days. I'm excited and nervous of what's to come. I plan on taking pics tonight for my own before and after as well as keep an eye on my diabetes type 2 and high cholesterol and improvements.

Hi all. By passers will be able to get liquids down pretty easily. Much easier than sleeve patients as bypassers no longer have their pyloric ( sp?) valve intact. Sleevers do.
so don’t worry about liquids sliding down easily if you are a bypass patient.

Every reply that I received on this post has been inspirational! You’ll all be happy to know that I fought through the craving and did not have that little piece of chocolate! After really thinking it through that little piece of chocolate is not worth destroying all the work I have put into my journey to become a healthier, slimmer me.

My dr told me that alcohol was a serious no-go post op. She literally described it as becoming as addictive as CRACK because of the way the body processes it (post bypass)... was she exaggerating?

During weight loss phase, I had the occasional glass of red wine or gin (or vodka) & soda Water with lots of lime.
AFTER weight loss phase, I do drink more, but generally stick to dry red wine or gin/vodka/tequila (less carbs in these). I stay away from sugary mixers, and sugary liqueurs (with the exception of Kahlua...an IMPORTANT ingredient in espresso martinis, lol)
It's also worth noting that post-wls it doesn't take a lot for me to feel the effects of alcohol. One and I'm done. Though I do also sober up very quickly now...

The issue for people post surgery is addiction transfer & alcohol is an easy transfer from food.
I enjoyed a glass of something (wine, gin, scotch) every night pre surgery but since my surgery I probably have a glass less than once a month. And then I rarely finish it. I also found that my taste buds have changed & a lot of alcohol tastes too sweet & just plain blah! Have to admit I don’t really miss it.
If I do have something to drink it’s gin & tonic. I drink it very slowly - an hour + for a low ball. Most of the bubbles dissipate quickly which helps with the carbonation issue.
A couple of things to consider: The carbonation fills you quickly & causes issues like discomfort. If you’re drinking, you’re not eating. Alcohol will dehydrate you. Alcohol has no nutritional value.

    Hi all,
One week post op! Whoo hoo, I’ve been feeling pretty good. I’m just concerned I’m not getting enough Protein in. I’ve been adding protein to my yogurt and pudding to make sure. Other than that, I’m sooo ready for real food! Lol

My program (Insurance) required three months of medically managed weight loss. They normally have you go through a twelve week course, but I was unable to attend the classes due to work. I ended up seeing my primary doctor once a month and a nutritionist once a month to meet the goal. I did not lose any weight, but was approved for surgery. My insurance requires BMI > 40 or BMI 35-40 with co-morbities like hypertension, diabetes 2, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea, to cover the surgery. I have co-morbidities and my BMI bounces right around 39-41. My surgeon is not particularly concerned about my pre-surgery weight as long as there are no huge changes in weight and I follow the two week liquid pre-op diet. I expect to lose 10-15 pounds on the diet, which will put my BMI at about the 39 level. If I did not have co-morbidities my insurance would not pay for the surgery with the lower BMI. It is kind of ridiculous, really.

I have to think your time counts lose or gain. I would hope that weight gain would be at the surgeon’s discretion as you will have fulfilled the insurance obligation.
I am right with you, nothing but a significant weight loss is going to change my health issues. I am also a nurse (assuming that is what your name implies) 😊. It is so frustrating that insurance is always driving health care instead of medical need.
i hope everything works out for you, @NurseJaci13! I am just hoping this new wave of COVID cases doesn’t hijack my surgery date again. I gained about 7 pounds when my first date was canceled🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

As far as I can tell they don't really care if I gain or lose, at least from what my BRS nurse said. It's more about the "education" I receive. I'm more concerned that they will think I gained on purpose to get over 40, which I didn't. I also have to be over 40 or be over 35 and have co-morbidities @WishMeSmaller and I agree. I'm only 5' 3" so a pretty small weight gain or loss changes my BMI but 5-10 pounds doesn't really change my health issues. I don't think my doctor even cares that much. They want you to meet with a nutritionist twice before surgery and do two psych evals, but they don't have a minimum time to do it in. They will get you in as quickly as you meet those two requirements and insurance approves. I was just wondering if anyone else had this situation.
