  1. Congrats on the meat, Meow! Sounds like you are doing great. Monday is surgery day for me. So looking forward to real food in the near future. I hope some of my early planned meals taste and feel good to me. Next week will be full liquids and then on to puréed. During puréed I am hoping I do well with eggs in any form and a tuna pate recipe I learned to make from Mom. I think about both daily. 😋 PS. I am also looking forward to change in November. 🤞🏻

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

I’m on Monday too! Glad I get my three shakes on Sunday instead of just clear liquids. Poor you! Just keep on keeping on. Happy surgery day to us on Monday!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Thanks for the recommendation! At this point I only have 3 days left and plenty of my protein powder left, so I am just going to power through. Believe it or not, I used to like my shakes pretty well...up until I had to drink 3 per day. Lol. I also got the vanilla and add different flavors. If I want chocolate I add unsweetened cocoa powder. I also do crystal light for different flavors. I think the texture of the shakes is what I hate the most and I think it is caused by the fiber. I just use 16 oz water instead of 8 and add more flavor. It helps. Good luck to you with your diet, @Judy1107! 😊

    Nervous

I don’t know how old you are, but in my personal experience my weight has continued to go up and I have developed more health problems from it in the last 5-6 years. For reference, I will be 47 in a couple of months. I cannot imagine waiting longer to change directions from the path I am current on because of how my health has suffered from obesity in recent years. I cannot tell you how much I wish I started this process 5 years ago instead of stopping enjoying life due to joint pain and negative self image. My people love me the way I am, but I am not feeling the love I should for myself. Think of the path you are currently on. Is it the one you want to stay on for the rest of your life or do you need to make a change? You can do this! You have made it so far already. We are all cheering for you!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

@Tamwell Wishing you safe travels and a generally boring surgery/recovery! 😊 @IWantTheDream I am right there with you too! Today is my last day of work. I have been working from home since Mid-March, so I can quarantine post-COVID test (yesterday) and still work. Started setting up auto reply on my emails yesterday and writing my hand-off email in my head. Surreal!

    Abnormal EKG?! :-(

You probably have an echocardiogram (ultrasound of heart) in your future. EKG measures electrical conduction and can be used to identify possible areas of structural abnormalities like atrial enlargement. The ultrasound provides an actual visual of the heart in action so measurements can be taken and diagnosis made. Unfortunately that is just info on technical stuff and I couldn’t guess what might happen surgery-wise from there. It would really depend on echo results. I had my EKG today and there did appear to be a slight conduction issue. Hoping there is no delay in my 7/6 surgery. Hope your results are benign so you can move forward in your process.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

My surgeon says no to premier protein because the protein is not a protein isolate😢 So 5 more days of the nasty stuff. I have gotten this far without cheating, so pretty sure I got this, thanks in part to all the encouragement here. I also started a day early because I wanted to start on a day off rather than a Monday, so I am 10 days in. Just a bit jelly of your haul😊 I like premier protein shakes. We have had them around for quick meals for years. Wishing you a wonderful pre-op diet, buddy!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Wow, Buddy! My stash is pitiful😂 I am on nasty 🤢 powdered protein though. 5 days left and it can’t happen soon enough. Wishing you the best start to your pre-op diet! 😊

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

So sorry this happened to you! It has been my biggest fear for about two weeks now. I am scheduled for 7/6. I will be sending you positive vibes for decreasing COVID in your state. 💕

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

I was also down 10 in the first 6 days of the pre-op diet! Embarrassing confession...I made my husband hide the scale yesterday so I would stop obsessively weighing myself. I *might* have OCD. 😂

    Pre-Op Primary Appointment

I was not required to do one, but chose to see my primary to talk about medications for co-morbidities and chronic conditions. She also ordered a couple of labs that were not included in my pre-op labs. For reference, my surgery is scheduled for 7/6 and I saw her on 6/19 a couple hours before my surgical pre-op appt. My pre-registration appt. is 7/1 at the hospital and includes a heap of labs, chest X-ray, EKG, and COVID test. After that I am in self quarantine until I go to the hospital on 7/6. Primary appt. should not be a big deal. Hope that helps!

To tell or not to tell

I started by just talking the whole thing through with my husband. He actually jumped all over the idea when I first mentioned it, as I am not the energetic person I was when we met. He later told me he was too afraid to bring it up before I did...smart man! 😂 After I had his full support, I told my parents (but made sure my mom did not tell my step-dad because he has always been super judgmental of my weight). Both Mom and Dad offered full support after I explained it. They are both in the 75-80 year old range and at normal BMI’s. I am a nurse working in a medical office of about 200 staff. I then told a few of my co-workers who I knew had previously had Bariatric Surgery or were considering Bariatric Surgery. This all took place over about a month. Then COVID hit and I was canceled for my first surgery date, so no one else was told. Now that I am approaching my surgery date on 7/6 I am kind of like “everyone is going to know soon, so whatever.” So far the only time I felt like someone was not super excited and happy for me was a co-worker who lost 150 pounds without surgery. She was not rude at all, just more restrained. I thought she would be super excited for me though, and she is someone I consider a friend. She will come around when I can finally become a hiking buddy instead of just talking about hiking😊 I am pretty private, but I am also absolutely terrible at NOT telling the truth, the WHOLE truth. Inevitably, I will end up telling every single person that asks, so I may as well just be open about it from the get go. Negative people will be ignored or dropped from my circle. I feel confident that most of the negative folks are already people I keep at arms length. I will have a huge cheering section. As my surgery date approached, my mom asked if she could tell my step-dad and I gave her permission. He surprised us both by jumping right into my cheering section. Telling the first person is the hardest. It gets easier. People are likely going to realize you had Bariatric Surgery (or speculate behind your back) even if you don’t tell them. People that truly care about you will be happy for you or soon come around. People that don’t come around can be kept at arms length, because they have their own agenda which is NOT in your best interest. Unfortunately, this includes family. I have been very fortunate. Apologies for a super long post. This has been brewing for a few days now. Regardless of who you choose to tell, you will always have this community in your cheering section.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Mine is also strict. My surgeon requires a high protein meal replacement shake with protein ISOLATE as the protein. I am having the Bariatric Advantage brand as this was the only one I found that met his criteria. I literally hate it as I finish week one of two of my pre-op diet. It was all I could do to get it down yesterday without gagging. I am allowed broths and flavored waters, but no jello or popsicles. I am also required to eat 2-4 cups of veggies per day (And only the ones on the short acceptable list), but they cannot be prepared with any oil or even cooking spray, and of course no sauces or any seasonings that contain fat or sugar. It is surprisingly hard to come up with palatable ways to prepare the veggies like this, and they are a bit hard on the digestion without anything else in the belly. That is my sob story. I guess I should be happy about my veggie bellyaches though, since at least I do get to put something in my belly. 🙄 I feel your misery, but we can do this! This is our time to get our lives back from the obesity beast. Keep on keeping on!!
  14. Thank you, Meow! Everything you say is true and it is exactly what I need to hear. I appreciate you!
  15. Hey all. Beware...rant session with whining ahead. I am starting to stress about the possibility of my surgery being canceled because of COVID...again. I am 6 days into my pre-op liquid diet and worried my 7/6 date will be canceled and I will have to start over. The first cancelation of my May surgery date got me really down and I am struggling with the reality that it could happen again. I am also getting even more paranoid about being around other people and even going to the store, because if I get COVID, obviously surgery will be canceled and of course I am high risk with obesity, asthma, etc. I am supposed to eat 2-4 cups of veggies per day right now, so I need to go out to buy fresh produce. And I’m hungry. And I’m not sleeping well. And I have to pee about every 5 minutes (contributing to poor sleep). My hubby is awesome, but I know he doesn’t “get” my mindset right now, so I figure I would share with folks that do understand. Feel free to throw me any advice right now to help me get through this. I appreciate everything everyone shares here and it definitely has helped me to this point to focus outward on other people’s stories.

    Bloating and Urinary Retention

You really need to get that checked ASAP. Call your surgeon’s office now or go to the ER. Lots of different things could be causing your symptoms and you can damage your kidneys or cause infection with retention.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

I feel like your twin right now...I am on day 5 of liquid diet and tonight I am on the struggle bus. I WANT food. I also have dental pain thanks to an infection around my dental implant. On antibiotics now and so afraid because it is hurting today and I also don’t want to screw up my surgery by calling the oral surgeon’s office. Uggg! Poor us! ps. RNY scheduled for 7/6
  18. I love scallops all the time and have been fantasizing about having some post-op. They seem like the perfect texture! Day 5 liquid pre-op diet 🙄 ps. When I go out to eat, my family always knows I will order scallops if they are on the menu😊
  19. Meow! Do you realize how awesome that is? Congrats on a strong start!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Started two week pre-op diet today. Shakes and 2-4 cups veggies from a list only. My well seasoned cucumbers were fabulous. Less excited about the shakes. It is only two weeks though. I can do this! 😊 Wishing everyone’s time flys until all of our surgery dates!
  21. @Groovymommy, sorry you are still feeling crappy. Just keep thinking about the end goal of all this and know it will get better. I am sure with the hernia repair, your body is using EVERY resource to heal and leaving you with no energy. Our bodies are greedy like that. 😜 I start my pre-op liquid diet today for my July 6th surgery. Hoping I can do it without too much misery. I had a very rough week last week including my 76 year old mom sustaining a brain injury and two broken wrists following a fall. She is going to be ok, but her recovery is slow. Then I had some unexpected complications with a dental implant causing swelling and a need for ten days antibiotics. It is always something, right? Last night my husband and I did a full set of measurements and photos of me. I plan to do it again the day before surgery and then every two to four weeks after surgery. Seems like a good way to remind myself why I have put myself through this when the days are not great. I might be looking at the photos a lot this week! Lol A big thanks to all of you leading the way with your surgeries! I appreciate all of the sharing! Sending out positive vibes for recovery and weight loss.

    11 Days Post Op plateau

Good call on talking to your doctor about the reduced urination. They might need to check some labs to make sure everything is ok.

Hi Koko! I am having bypass on July 6th. My first date was May 18. We are close now! Good job on losing weight in quarantine. I gained around 7😕 What surgery are you having?

    6 Month Pre-Op Diet Question

Weight loss will make a tough job a bit easier. Good luck with nursing school! It is miserable, but you will use most of what you learn, even if you do it unconsciously. I love nursing, but am currently working in a clinic rather than a hospital, in part because my weight was making it harder on some of challenging days. Sometimes I think I might want to go back to working in the hospital when I am more fit 😊
