  1. I love it! Goals aren’t just about setting a definite point and making sure you stay at it forever! My goal is to get to a healthy weight that is manageable and STAY there without all of the fluctuation. My goal is to be happy, which includes being more physical but also enjoying food. And I agree with you that not everyone looks good or looks healthy if they loose too much weight!

That is so interesting, thank you for the tip! I'm so glad that the surgery and the hernia repair were so beneficial to you! I am definitely planning on bringing a heating pad to the hospital and having it at home after, maybe ill add an ice pack too. I hope that you continue to have a smooth and happy recovery!

    Covid Vaccine

I have both doses of Moderna, in January and February. For the first dose, I just had a sore arm. After the second I had body aches, fever and chills the next day. By the 3rd day I was fine.

    Surgery tomorrow!

@Hop_Scotch I am every day dreaming of a “boring recovery” LOL!!!!! It helps to manage my anxiety to know that although some people do have problems, that there are cases like yours! 🤞🏼🤞🏼 Was your contact dermatitis from the glue or adhesive on your incision sites? What side effects did you have - just itching? What were you able to do to manage it?

    Any teachers out there?

@XtinaDoesIt I am an elementary school teacher in the Bronx but I am OOC- ENL! I am working in person but most of my students are remote - I am there for building duties and the few students that do come in. Most of my day I sit in a room and teach remotely anyway, and my building has an elevator. The week after break I want to stay at home to be safe but I’m hoping that the fact that I’ll mostly be in one spot and will have the elevator to get up and down weeks 3-4 will be good - if not, I’ll reassess and stay home for longer if needed!

    So it begins...I hope

Hi OP, I was in a very similar situation to you. I was a few pounds short of meeting the requirements and so I took a few months, I gained a few “naturally”, and then went back again and wow, I was a BMI of 40 lol. I have GHI NYC city employee insurance and for ours, it only counted of you met the BMI qualification for your first weigh in. The surgeons office should be able to tell you though. Just try to maintain it for a few months, and they’ll tell you if they want you to lose. For my last weigh in I was below 40 BMI. I was approved though and am starting the liquid diet tomorrow! I would suggest writing down your questions and then calling your insurance and surgeons offices. They have heard a lot of it before! Good luck!
  9. Liquid diet starts on Tuesday for surgery on March 30th! My fridge is now full of protein shakes and my cupboards are full of broth and jello mix! I know it’s going to be difficult, but I’m also so excited. Walking through the store today, I browsed the other foods but obviously just stuck to my shopping list and it felt so freeing. I can’t wait to have this tool to help break my dependency on food and impulses.

How Often Do You Weigh Yourself?

I have been worried about this, and am going to preventatively have my husband do the same! I am going to weigh myself Tuesday morning when I start the liquid diet, the morning of surgery in 15 days (eeeeek!) and then monthly after that. I don’t want to fall into the trap of measuring “success” in that way from the beginning!

    Any teachers out there?

I’m also a teacher and am having surgery during spring break (sleeve). I am going to be off that week, then work remotely the week after. I will reassess how I feel at that point!

    Scared to have surgery!

OP, it’s like I could have written this myself. You are echoing so many of my concerns and fears - I am scheduled for vsg 3/30. It’s like a roller coaster where I will feel confident and ready and then in disbelief that I’m even considering it. I think it’s all up to you and your intentions for having surgery. If you feel like it’s right for you, you will feel good going forward and willing to deal with the hopefully minor negative outcomes, should they even happen.
  13. What an inspirational story! Thank you for sharing! Congratulations on your success, I hope to be so successful less than a year from now!
  14. The fact that EVERYONE says "my only regret is not having done it sooner" is what keeps me going most days when I am so afraid and having doubts about going through with it! Thank you for sharing your story!
  15. Hi OP, I'm in a similar situation. When doing the supervised stage I stayed around 41/40 BMI. (I'm 5'10" and 283 at my highest) I am approved and have a surgery date but now as its getting closer, I am having the same concerns - its not like I'm hundreds of pounds overweight, could I really do this on my own if I tried harder, committed myself, etc. I'm really just scared about 1. dying in surgery, and 2. the amount of pain I will be in when I wake up and the days immediately after. I feel ashamed that it has come to this, and like I am making a very extreme decision to solve a problem that maybe I could fix on my own if I just tried harder. But then I also remember that I am 36, and have been yo-yo dieting and struggling to lose weight, maintain it, fail, gain weight, convince myself I'm happy no matter how much I weigh, repeat repeat repeat since I was in my teens. I don't even have a goal weight, I just want to be healthy and stabilize at a reasonable place and stay there. And that thought is what keeps me going and I think is what will carry me through the fear hopefully successfully straight to the surgery. No matter what our BMIs are, our histories are, our reasons are... if you feel like its what is right for you and will help you get back on track with the life that you know will make you happy, then its worth it.

    Pro OP liquid diet

I"m starting mine on the 16th also! My sleeve surgery date is the 30th! I don't have any real advice yet obviously, but I am going to go shopping this weekend to get a bunch of premier protein, a variety of broths and some jello. It seems like that is going to be the extent of it! I'm so so so nervous but so excited to be getting closer!
  17. That’s really a funny!! I am pre-op, but having surgery in 19 days!!! 😬😬 People talk about the foamies or being uncomfortably or painfully full, but not often about knowing it’s time to stop! Even if it’s something as silly as sneezing, I’ll take any indicator that I’ve reached capacity!
  18. Hello! I have finally received my surgery date for 3/30, and I absolutely can't believe it. I am so scared, but I am also so excited and hopeful about the future. I am looking to make a plan for requesting time off of work, and I am wondering how long it really takes until people feel back to normal, or normal enough to start doing regular work again. I am a teacher who works in person, and my surgery will be happening over spring break, so that will be the first week. In the current environment, its good because we have the option to work remotely, so I am going to request to work remotely the week after break - doing google meet sessions with students for about 6 hours a day. For the following week, week 3, I was thinking I could come back to work in person as long as I'm not running/lifting or straining myself. Does that sound reasonable based on people's experiences? Did you feel like you had the energy to work remotely by week 2, and back in person by week 3? I know it all depends on how things are actually going, and I'll change the plan if I need to, but I Just need to make an initial plan to give to my admin. Thanks!

    Body Image Issues

I'm so sorry that you are feeling this way. Our minds, combined with society's expectations, can really play some tricks on us when it comes to thinking, "Yes, I know I'm thinner but not enough." Its never enough. Its never what others are doing. Its never what we expected. It really is so tragic. I don't have much that I can offer for advice, but I am sorry that this is affecting you. As someone who is pre-op and a few weeks out, I am bursting at the seams for the day that I have lost 75 pounds. So maybe try thinking back to, and connect with, pre-op you and having a mental conversation about how far you come, and how its not all up to measurements or how you look. You should be proud!
  20. I'm still pre-op, but my nutritionist was telling me yesterday to get the unflavored clear protein powder mix in for post-op, as then i will be able to get in my protein and hydration together, especially in the beginning. Maybe thats another strategy, by switching them around to get both.

  22. OMG, I hope that I have the same outcome as you!!! Its inspiring and comforting to hear that some people cruise through with little to no difficulty or pain - its good to know that its possible!

    Pre-op Diet and Headache

Ive had this happen when I do pressed juice cleanses in the past (I know, I know, they're bad) and I find that after day 1-2 I will have a headache, but then you actually hit a nice point of euphoria once your body starts working through it. They do go away - maybe some ibuprofen or something might work for now.
