I do wish I had been prepared for the saggy skin, particularly on my neck (which can't really be disguised).

The other big thing for which I was not prepared was the how much of my social life revolved around eating and drinking. It is still awkward to go out to dinner with people and only order an appetizer, with people constantly urging, "Oh, come on--one piece of cheesecake isn't going to make a difference--you are so thin!" I've also given up alcohol completely, and since we can't do carbonated beverages, that basically leaves tap Water as my drink of choice when everyone else is having wine or champagne. I don't mind, but I get tired of telling people I really don't want anything else, particularly when they don't know I've had the surgery.

Wow. I never realized that the sag can also happen on the neck. This is something I definitely have to watch for.

And food highly revolves around my family. I come from a very cultural background and we see food as a way to gather, share, and connect the family bond and strength. And to really think about it now, that is why alot of people in my island is big.

  2. When you do see your surgeon for consultation, ask if he/she is requiring you to lose weight because you're right at 40. I would also advise you to speak to your insurance to see if they will deny you if your BMI dips below 40, unless you have 2 or more co-morbidities.

This is one of the questions I asked in the bariatric FB group because my BMI is 44, and if I lose 21 lbs then I'll be below 40. Thankfully my surgeon is NOT requiring me to lose any weight pre-surgery.

Its costing me about 10K. Includes everything including hotel and testing prior to surgery. I pay for airfare though. They will even transport you to and from the airport and to appointments. Its Blossom Bariatrics. They will submit to my insurance and see if they will pay anything out of network.... Labs, other tests, etc. Was going to try Mexico for surgery but my husband forbid it....

Did the doctors themselves require you to complete anything prior to surgery? Like nutrition classes psych eval, etc...

My sleeve is scheduled March 6th. Super excited and scared at the same time. I am doing the self pay thing in Las Vegas because WLS is excluded on my insurance. I tried doing the 6 month program with my insurance years ago just to be denied. It was a heat breaker for sure.

Oh wow, sorry to hear that they denied you years ago. How much are you paying for WLS in LV?

Good point-I haven’t received official word yet on insurance approval. I had the very same concern you expressed. According to the administrator in my program, insurance looks at 2 BMIs-one at the time the PCP makes referral to the program and one at the first appointment with the program. Based on that, I would qualify. She said she was unaware of anybody who completed the program requirements ultimately being rejected by insurance for having a BMI too low and she was aware of people with BMIs close to 30 who qualified. So at this point I’m cautiously optimistic but certainly not out of the woods yet. Please wish me luck!

Ahhh man good luck on that! Hopefully they approve you with no problems.

Thankfully, my surgeon didn't require me to lose weight.

Some of the things that made me think hard about having the bypass in the beginning was that I did not want to have to do surgery twice.

This is what I'm worried about. As you said, some people do just fine with the sleeve. But I'm afraid that if I went with the sleeve, it might cause GERD. I've had acid reflux in the past, but it went away after the removal of my gallbladder. But I'm really worried it may be a problem for me and then I may need to do a bypass. I've been contemplating the bypass for the last week now, it's definitely alot to think about that's for sure.

    Go Dawgs......

    My husband is from GA.

Did you find a new dr? Make sure you get them to send over all your stuff. After you leave the state it will be harder to get information.

I didn't find a new doctor yet, but if anyone has any recommendations, please let me know. I definitely plan to have my current doctor just refer/transfer me to a doctor in GA.

There you go.... you did the right thing by checking with insurance. I would find out who your case worker is and keep in contact with him/her. Document every call, when, who and what you talked about. When possible use email. I wouldn't settle for "should"... i would want to know .... Yes, you defiantly will be able to continue.....

What state are you moving from and to? Cross all your t's and dot all your i's. don't give them any reason to deny you.

I'm moving from Washington State to Georgia State.
