I have my surgery on 10/1. I just started my prep diet this morning. I've already made my basic clothing selections based on the weather forecast for Mexico. I'm just flat excited to get this journey underway!!!!!!!!!!

I'm due to have my gastric bypass 3rd October, I'm very nervous - mostly about general anaesthetic than anything else. I'm very excited to move on to a new phase of my life! Good luck everyone!

I knew i was not a great candidate for sleeve because of reflux but I was thinking RNY because I didn't understand what MGB was. My surgeon suggested Mini Gastric bypass. I believe he prefers it because there is only one anastamosis and I'm thinking any time you can do a simpler surgery there is less risk of complications and that seemed like a good thing to me. After I researched it a bit, I was happy with his recommendation.

I stopped by to visit my wife at work with my son. i had already dropped over 100lbs and someone asked if we were her sons. She was not happy 🤣. So she tells me to grow a beard.

I can't tolerate bread and anything with fat in it. I ate two bites of a grilled chicken wing the other day and went straight to the bathroom to vomit. I felt like hell for hours.
Bread makes me extremely uncomfortable for about 30-45 minutes after eating it but eventually goes away.
I had halo top ice cream and had no problems with it at all.
I guess it just depends on each person.
    Good luck!! ❤️

Well said...and you are right about the benefits to gain. For me one of those will be being able to stand more than a few minutes without my body hurting. That will be worth giving up bread or anything else!

This is probably the harshest thing I have ever written on here, but unless you have some issue I'm not aware of, I think your doctor is bananas. I wonder if it's some test to see if you can do it? I had the same surgery and could have a shake and 2 lean cuisines a day the 2 weeks before surgery and only had one day of liquids. That being said, I don't think taking them for a week would hurt because you won't be able to eat after surgery, but the hunger that comes back when you go off appetite suppressants is always a concern. I would ask your doctor if the diet is really mandatory and about the appetite suppressants.

The article I just read says it does cause more acid reflux because your "old stomach" and pouch are in the same "loop" so the acid from the old stomach can, in theory, back up into the pouch... which can't happen with regular RNY. I had never heard of the surgery before this forum... doesn't seem like most insurance covers it yet.

Re: the dumping. I am glad dumping is a risk. I had a semi-dumping episode as a reaction to some cream Soup and it is a massive deterrent. It's basically trained me to never, ever want to risk having carb heavy, fat heavy, or sugar heavy anything, ever again, because I never want that experience again. I look at it as an awesome training tool.

I agree N0VA, if you get where you want to be, it doesn't matter. I just find it interesting that so many doctors don't recommend it or perform it. It just seems like such a viable option. Lots of sleeves get converted so I don't understand why they don't just recommend it in the first place. Personally, I don't know many people that have had it. I have met a lot of full bypass patients and sleeve patients. I rarely meet an MGB person.

Patients that weigh below 200 lbs (or had a revision) don't typically lose as quickly as someone that weighs a lot more, so try not to compare yourself to others. Cally, you've lost 14 lbs in 3.5 weeks , which isn't bad, especially after being pumped with IV fluids.

Lizzziee reacted to UnderTheCaliSun in MINI GASTRIC BYPASS AND ACID REFLUX
I had severe acid reflux before I had my mini. I had a hiatal hernia too. That was fixed and my mini was done last year. I have since lost 120 lbs. I don't have any acid reflux, none at all. I may have had one small episode of bile reflux last fall but I'm not sure. It didn't last but 10 minutes and went away with a few swigs of mylanta. I don't take any medication for reflux but I'm prepared to take Nexium if need be. They sell it pretty cheap at costco and I have a friend who gets bile reflux after she had her gallbladder out. She said Nexium works very well.
As for eating, I can eat anything. I don't dump, I don't crush pills. I just eat very small amounts of food 5 or 6 times a day and stay on my healthy diet. I had a small piece of cake at a wedding and a cadbury egg at Easter but I have lost my sweet tooth so I don't crave that stuff anymore. It was really satisfying to allow myself a treat and find that I didn't want to finish it all. I just was not interested. I really love meat, veggies and fruit. I drink a Protein Shake every morning. I use a straw daily. I take my chewable vitamins and so far I have no complains. This was the best decision I ever made.
My philosophy is that nothing is perfect. I can either deal with the health issues that come with being obese along with how uncomfortable I was and that I hated my appearance OR I can deal with the very few health issues that might come with WLS. So far, it is one episode of something (maybe bile reflux) and a lot of extra skin. I"m good with that trade off.
    I hope that helps!

My heart goes out to you. I was on liquids for two weeks in May prior to surgery. I was so crazy. I found hot broth helped a lot and miso Soup. On day of surgery my surgeon said liver was perfectly small and it made it so much easier for him. You must stick to this for your own safety. Hang in there it will be worth it.

Yes!! I finally got over it this past weekend because I purposely ran out of coffee at home since no one else drinks it there. I can honestly see why people relapse. It was terrible. Out of habit I still want to make a cup of coffee and drink it, but nope.

I didn't have to do any pre-op diet at all except the day before was just non sugar drinks and non sugar Jello so I commend you all for your dedication! Something that helped me enormously after surgery was using a shaved ice maker. You could eat it plain or drizzle sugar-free gatorade or even clear Protein Drinks on it. You just feel like you are eating and it is so satisfying plus you are getting some liquids in. I had one from wm for years but they also sell them for around 20 on Amazon.
