  1. My doctor recommended I have the sleeve as he considered a better idea when looking at my health history. Part of the process for my doctor was to have an EGD to confirm that sleeve was the right choice. My doctor found a mass in my duodenum which turned out to be non-cancerous, whew! A second opinion from a surgical specialist they decided to just monitor the mass instead of removing it as that surgery would be very complicated and losing more weight would help if I ever needed that surgery. Due to that issue the sleeve is a better choice because they can still do an EGD in 6 months to check on it. So long story short, the choice should be made by you and your doctor based on your situation and health history.
  2. I found this information during my research. I plan on adopting it as my mantra because one of the reasons I got where I am at is by eating to fast. It is the 20-20-20 rule. Aim to eat 20 mouthful of food over an20 minute period, chewing each mouthful 20 times, putting down utensils between each mouthful. https://www.bariatriccookery.com/202020-rule/
  3. I say go for it dude. Why not just get a mirror and do the surgery yourself. You could save thousands of dollars! (DISCLAIMER!!!! I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night either)
  4. No, but I have friends who take it for type 2 diabetes. They do one shot a week and it helps control blood sugar. From the ads I have seen it can also make you lose some weight.
  5. I haven't had surgery yet, but I have been dieting since July 2019 as my surgeon wanted me to get my BMI down to 50 before surgery. I started at trying to stay at or under 2400 calories per day and as I lost weight I dropped it to 2000 per day. After about 3 months I was comfortable on 1600 calories a day. I also noticed that if I stalled or even wasn't stalling that if I had a couple of days closer to my upper limits and then cranked it back down to lower I had my best week of weight loss. I haven't done much research but I think this is labelled as a calorie confusion diet or metabolic confusion diet. This is where you alternate between high calorie and low calorie days. I also did 16:8 intermittent fasting. Your body thinks it is starving on the lower calories and then you bump your metabolism back up with high calorie day.
  6. +1 on the water aerobics. I work out at our local community center and in the pool area the have a lazy river which the dedicate walking in the mornings. I started out doing that, walking against the current. Easy on the knees and hips, but you can get a good workout. If you have access to that I would recommend it. I see a lot of people who have knee and hip replacements doing that.
  7. Just got a call and my surgery has been switched from 7:30 am to 9:45 am tomorrow. I am OK with that because I originally needed to be at the hospital at 5:30 am, now my time is 7:15 am so I can sleep a little later. As to pre-op diets my surgeon gave me the following list of protein drinks to use: Premier Protein, Bariatric Advantage Protein Powder, Muscle Milk Genuine, Unjury Protein Powder and/or Protein 2O. Powders could be mixed with water or skim milk. The goal was to get 80-90 grams of protein each day. I could have 1 cup of fruit or vegetables two times a day. I could also have low sodium chicken broth along with sugar free popsicles and jello. I did 1 week of liquids with day before surgery just clear liquids. This is done to shrink the liver so doctor can lift the liver off of the stomach to allow better access to it.
  8. I say go for it dude!
  9. You can make your own refreezable ice pack with a gallon freezer bag. Fill it with 3 cups of water and 1 cup of rubbing alcohol and then just put it in the freezer. Make two so you can always have one ready to go while you are using the other one.
  10. Are you taking your pain meds scheduled? Don't chase pain. What that means as it was explained to me is once you feel pain it is too late to catch up by taking a pain pill or liquid or whatever your doctor gives you. If the prescription says every four hours, then do that. You can wean yourself off them after a few more days.

Ever see the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"? Check it out if you haven't. Maybe you will wind up like him. ?
  12. I did a quick search and found these. So there are some out there. You will have to search them out. https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Fuhrman-Gentle-Care-Formula/dp/B004L176J2 Also look for MTHFR mutation. People with this can't handle man made folic acid. So there are vitamins made without it.
  13. I am ready. On day five of 1 week liquid diet and I have lost 12 lbs since starting it (I probably lost a couple of pounds sweating the Chiefs win yesterday) . Lots of ups and downs for energy, but hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. Two more days left. My surgery is at 7:30 am on Thursday and I have to be there at 5:30 am. Been getting up early and going to bed early so I can be well rested.
  14. Here is BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) calculator which shows your daily caloric needs based on your height and weight. Not sure if it would be any different for WLS folk, but it will at least give you and idea of where you are at. For me an 80 lbs weight loss means my BMR is 500 calories a day less than when I started. http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

Woo Hoo take that Death! ?
  16. My doctor prescribed medication for stomach cramps, hyoscyamine 0.125 mg tab sublingual. I haven't had surgery yet so I can't say if it works or not.
  17. Zinc lozenges. They have worked for me.
  18. I got this for Christmas. Haven't tried it yet though. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003KYSLMW/?coliid=I2BIEXKDHB3J7H&colid=2KUKQ5BZKETEV&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
  19. 3 words Protein Ice Cream. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2008/08/protein-ice-cream.html
  20. I had colon surgery in December 2018 and it took 3 weeks for my big incision to stop draining. For the first week it was leaking a lot. Fat people are prone to seroma's. A seroma is a pocket formed by the accumulation of serous fluid after surgery. The surgeon says it was nothing to worry about as long as the fluid was clear and not cloudy. But it did bother me as it would leak through the dressing. It will get better.
  21. Be careful collagen is not a complete protein and shouldn't be counted in your protein totals. It only has 8 of 9 amino acids required to be a complete protein. It is still beneficial though. Here is a good article explaining the benefits and shortcomings of collagen. https://tasty-yummies.com/collagen-good-source-protein/
  22. You can try a site like healthgrades.com. don't know if this is your doctor but this is what I found https://www.healthgrades.com/physician/dr-luis-alfonso-benavente-chenhalls-29jcy
  23. A lot of liquids with caffeine are also acidic. You are trying to let your stomach heal so why introduce an irritant? I guess I would rather be safe than sorry.
  24. On day two of 1 week liquid diet. It hasn't been too bad so far as it allows for something every hour or so. 8am - Protein shake 9:30am - sugar free jello, 1 cup of fruit and 8 oz water 10:30 am Protein Shake 12pm - 16 oz water 1pm - Protein Shake 2:30pm - 1 cup low sodium broth, 1 cup of fruit and 8 oz water 3:30pm - Protein Shake 5pm - 16 oz water 6:30pm - Protein shake 8pm - 1 cup low sodium broth and 1 cup of fruit Spreading things out over the day helps. Prior to this I was dieting using intermittent fasting, so I am used to feeling hungry and can deal with it.
  25. I read that as well. I have been taking it for a couple of months now. I haven't noticed any changes positive or negative. Doctor said to stop all supplements 1 week before surgery, so I will pick it back up after surgery when my stomach has recovered a bit.
