Partner/ spouse support
Bastian replied to Nomorepasta's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The risks are minimal and you are far more likely to die from the excess weight than the surgery. My husband who is also a nurse was worried for me too, in fact he was more nervous than me! His concerns were that I'd die on the table or have serious complications. Of course being me, I did have serious complications and was in hospital for 2 weeks and had to have an emergency bypass but once through that, all was well, slow progress after 2 major ops but all good. He was also very aware that for the last 15 years i have tried every diet on the planet to lose weight and keep it off. I was starting to show signs of metabolic syndrome and he knew if i didn't do something permanent i could well be dead from my weight in ten years. Surgery is scary but not as scary as doing nothing. You know in your heart if this really is the right path for you. So make your decision explain to him you understand his fears but ultimately it is your decision and you NEED him to respect and support it. Good luck [emoji4] Sent from my SM-G935F using BariatricPal mobile app -
What are "Drains" in a Laparascopic Revision Surgery?
Bastian replied to almosttogoal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Post surgical drains are used to drain excess serous fluids and blood from the surgical site to prevent large, potentially problematic haematomas and sinuses developing. They are very common and nothing to be concerned about. Sent from my SM-G935F using BariatricPal mobile app -
Q & A With Someone Who's Been There...
Bastian replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone is different, we can all tolerate different foods at different stages. You just have to slowly incorporate different foods when you are ready and able. Loads of info on this site from lots of long termers and you will see no 2 people had the same journey [emoji4] Sent from my SM-G935F using BariatricPal mobile app -

I haven't needed anything, was over 2 weeks before the first time post op, in fact, if you take into account the 2 weeks before surgery while I was on shakes in total it was nearly a month and a half (was in hospital for 2 weeks only on iv fluids), but I didn't have pain or fullness so knew I wasn't constipated, there just wasn't enough waste to go. Our intake is far less so we won't need to go as often to start with. Sometimes people think not going is constipation when in fact there just isn't enough in the system to go. Then again some people suffer for life with real constipation. See what works for you and go with that Fingers crossed you are only on them short term

It varies with everybody, 6 weeks is the norm to be healed so I would say expect some pain that reduces with time for 6 weeks and if it stops before then, then that is great. If you eat/drink too much you might get pain or if you do things that are too strenuous before your body is ready, just take regular paracetamol and give your body time to heal. It is major surgery after all. You sound like you are doing really well, if the pain doesn't ease up over the next couple of weeks or gets worse or isn't controlled by analgesia then speak to your team

Woman starting at over 300lbs weight loss success
Bastian replied to Jesuslovesyou's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You will see it varies with everyone, but I think the rule of thumb Dr's use is 80-90% of excess weight in 6 months. As usual it seems to be the more you need to lose the faster it happens, but again depends on the individual -
Surgery went great on Monday
Bastian replied to ColoradoCanuck's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Fantastic!! Perhaps don't lay completely flat yet if your 02 levels aren't fantastic, they will get better as the fat melts away. Just try to let your body have the best recovery it can, so propped up on some pillows, to begin with, is probs a good idea. Well done for being a star patient -
Pre-Op diet HUNGRY
Bastian replied to HamHockSkye's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Around day 3 ketosis kicks in and stops the hunger being so strong. Such a hard thing to do but totally worth it. A cliche but true = YOU CAN DO THIS. Every time you feel tempted to eat have a big drink and THINK about why you have started this journey. Think of all the positives having the surgery will provide you AND remember that 2 weeks will soon be long gone and you will be post-op and not be hungry at all and it will have all been so worth the small struggle as you watch the weight melting away keep busy too, try and do things that you can get engrossed in to take your mind off the hunger. GOOD LUCK and see you on the other side -
hey you are human and it happens, i'm sure you will have lost enough. Being type 1 diabetic having a hypo you will need a high carb boost so you know....don't worry it'll be fine

Who will you tell (or not tell) about WLS?
Bastian replied to ChubRub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
other than my immediate family I only told 3 people. It isn't anyone else's business and like you I can't be doing with the judgement that this has been an 'easy' way out because it has been very difficult for me and even though I am now healed from my op, then my emergency revision a week later, I have ongoing awful nausea and that is with being on antiemetics for it so after, so you know....tell who you are comfortable with. No right or wrong, our own choice -
Very little! I do however crave Chinese, Indian and Korean food, not take-away or westernised stuff but proper traditional stuff. I am obsessed with kimchi and sui mai at the moment. My husband doesn't like the smell when I open the kimchi LOL I guess coz it is fermented (great for the gut) the garlic smell doesn't linger on my breath, good job really or he might move to the spare room lol
