  1. There has been something that has bothered me since my operation 5 years ago was my psychiatric visit pre-op. Like most of you I'm sure they're going to do this or have already done this you know the psychiatric evaluation consisted of a questionnaire and a second visit to discuss it now granted I am a psychologist and I kind of chalk this up to no one doctor to another in office but the first 15 minutes at my follow-up visit we just kind of chatted briefly just talked about the piece of paper that he had his hand that I filled out the questionnaire not one question to lie about it the rest of the time we sat and visited and talked about the treatment of borderline personality disorder and that's obviously unrelated but I just considered that you know if he felt I was going to have a problem he might have addressed it I didn't feel I was going to have a problem. However I went into this operation a very strong-willed individual I didn't have self-esteem problems I didn't have issues of that nature and a very strong personal sense of self. The problem began about three days in maybe four days when I was in so much pain realizing that gravity of the entire situation being at it was that I've never considered killing myself in my entire life I just never thought like that however on that night I remember sitting up in the couch cuz I couldn't lay down yet and was thinking of ways to pretty much into my life fortunately I was able to snap out of that really quick and move on and you know obviously nothing bad happened however I do worry about people that go into this not mentally prepared enough for this. If you're not a strong individual and you go into this operation and you're not mentally prepared it's going to be extremely difficult just try to make sure you understand the amount of pain and the amount of a commitment that you're going to go through. The doctors love to give you all the upsides and they kind of glossed over the downside quite a bit but they'll tell you oh it's going it's going to be that wonderful wonderful wonderful well you know what the reality is there's more to it than that so the biggest piece of advice that I can give anybody that's thinking of this operation is to just take pause just for a moment mentally prepare yourself for the first month to five years and just get ready because it's not that easy and don't let anyone try to tell you that this is the easy way out I still struggle everyday with my diet with trying to get enough fluids and still have a hard time processing the foods that I used to enjoy there are other concerns that you know I wasn't meant to prepare for that warm fuzzy feeling that you used to get from Thanksgiving dinner when you stress eat all that that's all gone after gastric bypass a friend of mine told me about that and I didn't believe him until I experienced it for myself so I just asked it please take a moment to gather your faculties and just mentally prepare yourself it's going to be okay in the long run and it will just follow up with the doctor say and you'll be fine do what they say but just mentally prepare yourself that's all I can add. 2. Yes I actually considered all of the operations I had initially settled on the sleeve but after speaking one-on-one with my surgeon, and she was great by the way, my diabetes was so far out of whack that she swayed me into gastric bypass I had hoped that some of the Edition issues would be taking care of quicker with the bastard bypass as opposed to the sleeve which it did I was no longer at diabetic I don't know maybe 5-6 days after the operation but there are other challenges that come with complete bypass as opposed to sleeve operation in retrospect I suppose I did the right decision but it was not an easy one it all typically will matter on what your goals are and what you're willing to accept as far as additional Lifestyle Changes Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Vision Changes?

I never experienced any of that. Are you still on heavy pain mess? Opeats in higher doses could cause that sensation perhaps you should consult with your Dr (gastric) soon as in Monday morning or sooner. I don't feel its a eye issue per se seems more of a information transfer problem between your brain and information is being received and trying to sort itself out to make sence of it all but that's just my two cents but I would definitely speak with a doctor soon Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. So I'm coming up on 5 years since my gastric bypass operation. I weighed 384 lbs the day of my procedure, as of today I have now broke 170 lbs range that's with the excess skin still hanging on there lol which I assume is probably around another 10 to 12 pounds. Its has been a struggle but worthwhile I look at myself in the mirror and feel like just got out of a concentration camp... Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

Ty I don't feel very inspiring but I just like to have people understand the realities of post-surgery I think some of that has been glossed over and people should be ready that's a my only concern that's what I bring to the table Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. I initially was going to get the sleeve but my diabetes at the time was so far out of whack it was over a A1c of 12 at one point and having in-depth medical conversations with my surgeon about clinical trials and the like as it relates to gastric bypass or sleeves and diabetes with both of them having virtually the same outcome at 5 to 6 years post operation the only difference was in two weeks I was no longer going to be a diabetic so that's why I opted for the gastric bypass as opposed to sleeve and I literally was no longer a diabetic probably a week after the operation it was just gone and I sit around and eat candy all the time right now and I still continue to lose an extreme amount of weight I think the candy slows my weight loss down some honestly Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

Well firstly the overhang does suck but I hope to get that removed at some point in the future I'm definitely at that point now I can feel my ribs through my lack of better term nipples so there's literally no muscle or fat underneath my chest whatsoever and just this kind of circle around my belly where I get ulcers and things underneath if I'm not sure to keep it extremely clean. But back to your concern about portions. How much can you eat now it'll you weren't portioning for diet purposes? I can at best eat what a 10 yr old eats still to this day. My wife still tries to serve be a huge bowl of spaghetti (happened yesterday lol) but I can only eat maybe 4 or 5 bites or go glacial slow. Spaghetti is the hardest thing for me to process still. However I did find whole wheat noodle are much easier. My portions were never a problem after the operation. If i went over it was right back up. Tbh I pushed my limits beyond what I would ever recommend I have spent 5 yrs throwing up. I do almost everyday still. But it's getting better as my body adapts to food again. Still can't do rice and chicken is a crap shoot at best. But yes you can do it. It's all in your head. You have seen just how little you HAVE to eat to survive. Make up your mind. And don't give up..... ever and you will succeed. It's not if you fail. It's if you continue on after a failure Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

Starting Pureed Stage on Monday. Ideas?

I progressed into a runny version of refried Beans about six or seven days after the operation and I tolerated it quite well it's got a lot of Protein in it because it's beans to so that was a benefit as well might be something to consider. my nutritionist wasn't real happy about it because I went to it to fast she felt but my surgeon and I discussed it and she agreed it was okay for my circumstances Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

Yes. Gas-ex is a great idea in fact any type of laxative is going to help otherwise you're going to get bound up and you're going to be in a considerable amount of pain pretty quick so yeah keep keep the stuff flowing out LOL Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Switching Surgeons

I agree the best surgeon forget the office that's minor you want to have the best surgeon at the end of the day that's the person that's putting his hands into your body is not the person that answer the phone it's not the person that takes care of the paperwork it's the surgent your life depends on the surgeon so I was very fortunate I had one of the best surgeons I could have especially for my own personal edification her and I spoke very clinically and she treated me like a real person and not like an idiot and I really appreciate her for that but just find the right surgeon don't worry about the extra stuff around it that's secondary that's my two cents Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app

Thank you I appreciate that it's been a struggle I kind of looked over some of your posts and I see that you're having some problems if you want to talk I'll answer whatever I can for you I went through this considerably well and I've lost well over 200 pounds and I'm also a psychologist it so that helps a little bit but if you have any specific questions or ideas you want to talk about feel free to talk to me. And yes you can. It's not to late. Your still alive so therefore it's not to late and to be honest. I'm surprised I lost as much as i did I wasnt/are the most compliant. 14. How are your bowel movements that was one of the biggest pains that I had after the initial surgery didn't hurt anymore but the bowel movements you really need to get that stuff moving that was some of the worst pain that I had to endure it after the operation and it lasted about a week or so afterwards and that's kind of right where it hurts up underneath your ribs inside your colon kind of hard to describe the pain kind of travels Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. Well I'm not a office worker but I was a repossessor and kind of against doctor's advice I went back to work full-time a week after my operation but I do typically heal fast and I felt pretty comfortable with it but in hindsight I probably should took another week but it worked out but I don't recommend that listen to what the doctor says and just take it easy Sent from my SM-G920V using BariatricPal mobile app
