I’m literally sitting here sad. I’m sad because I can’t eat food. It sounds so dumb to me. But I’m literally MOURNING and I feel ungrateful because of it. I’m 3 days post op and I’m complaining. Is this normal??

I wish I was bottomless pit for protein shakes lol but I feel pretty bottomless when it comes to clear, thin liquids. I can eat an entire sugar free popsicle, a whole bowl of broth, a bottle of water, etc. As soon as it gets some thickness I have to slow down though. I am 2 weeks and 2 days out

It really depends on your situation, your insurance (down to the specific plan, not just carrier), and your surgical team.

This is a personal anecdote, but I was close to the cutoff the whole time, but actually gained about 20lbs through the first 3 months of my 6 month diet because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and had to be on a 3 month course of steroids. Nobody on my team was all that concerned, but they did make it clear that in the last 3 months they wanted to see some kind of change - statistically, you are more likely to have a successful surgical resolution if you manage to lose even a little bit of weight beforehand. Side note, most insurances, when you apply for surgery, take into account only your pre-op BMI.

Some real tips I found helpful - start focusing on protein and getting in 50-70 grams of protein a day. It is good practice for post op.
Buy a bunch of different protein shakes (look for shakes that are low in calories and very low in carbs/sugar and high in protein) and try them. Find a set few that you think you like and start incorporating those into your diet, but be sure to give yourself kind of a selection after surgery because what worked for you pre-op might not work post-op.
Logging and mindful eating with actual goals is huge. You should be logging after surgery until you can reliably get in your 70-80 grams of protein per day, so getting in that habit is super important.

I love chicken pad Thai so much, but I haven't had it in months. I used to eat a full order in a sitting at least once a week. Last night i asked if they could replace the rice noodles with bean sprouts and ate 1/4th of an order (about 1 cup). My husband's full order is included for comparison. It was amazing!

I had a wedge pillow already for GERD and it definitely helped, but the worst part for me was actually getting up and laying down - I had terrible pains in my abs from using them to shift position. I am 2 weeks and 2 days out now and sleeping relatively normally, including sleeping on my stomach.

I haven’t tried on a costume in years, mainly because I could never fit anything. For some reason this one is so symbolic to me. I wanted the girls to dress up in a incredible costume but they had other ideas of what they wanted to be this year. Maybe next year ?

I'm a pescatarian, but mostly eat vegetarian. Some of my veggie go-tos are (I eat far too much cheese, which may not work for you with the autoimmune - not sure):
    greek yogurt
Quark (its a cheese that is yogurt consistency - but thinner than greek yogurt) I almost always have quark with frozen blueberries for breakfast - by the time i get to work, the bb are still a little frozen, but not hard)
cottage cheese (there is one that is higher protein)
My favorite lunch is ricotta bake (google "Eggface ricotta bake") - I always add some sauteed spinach. I make a double batch and cook them in a mini loaf pan (makes 8 mini loaves) - freeze half of them.
beans/lentils (although not a lot of protein here)
tofu - I either buy extra firm, drain it, and bake it or buy the baked tofu from places like trader joe's
    eggs - mostly scrambled
Veggie sausage (I like morninstar farms)
egg salad (2 eggs, 1 TBL greek yog, 1 TBL may)
Veggie burgers (look at the protein content, some are low protein/high carb)

    Snacks
    almonds
    Sargento nut snack packs
    cheese
    fairlife milk

This isn't the exact same thing, but I have an autoimmune disease and was put on steroids approximately 10 days after my last appointment for my medically supervised diet, and I have gained weight - like 5lbs - since I was last in. Because I'm ravenous because that's what steroids do. I think it's up to you about lifting weights, but I know my friends who have had the surgery have said that they should have conditioned their core and back a little more to be able to support just how weak you are after abdominal surgery! Maybe do just bodyweight exercise?
