Update: Got my insurance approval at the end of January. Have first visit with the surgeon on the 27th, along with Respiratory Fitness testing and Cardiac Clearance on the 28th. Still don't have a date, but I'm still hoping it will be April. I'm told my surgeon books out a good 3 months so it may turn into May, but it will be sometime in the near-er future.
Hope y'all are doing well. :)

Good morning everyone. After months of waiting, I finally received a surgery date 4/16/2020. I would love to chat with anyone having surgery in April.
    my status:
Insurance: changed from a PPO to an *** (due to a new job). I have emblemhealth HIP Prime ***.
Began process July 2019: 6 months of checking my weight.
BMI 39: mild sleep apnea and hypertension.
hospital : Lenox Hill in NY
Surgery : RNY but still seriously considering DS. My doc is open to any of them but encouraged me to choose RNY.
I have a pre-op class next month 2/20 and must complete pre-op labs during the last week of March 2020. Paperwork to my insurance will be submitted in March 2020.
good luck everyone!! I am hoping I get my surgery approved by my insurance as I am looking forward to my new journey

My surgery date is April 8th. I started the process last May. I just got my approval yesterday. 53 days and counting! I don’t mind waiting because now that I know for sure it’s happening I have time to get in the right headspace.

Had my first appointment today with the surgeon. She was great! I was able to ask questions, and tell her about where I'm coming from/why I'm pursuing this opportunity all that. Gave me things to start thinking about in preparation.
She said she'd recommend the bypass instead of the sleeve, which is what I was going for. Doesn't see any medical problems that cause her concern.
Asking about a timeline what to expect, anddddddd she said that within the next 4 months I should be able to meet the requirements! I need to lose another 25 pounds to meet the weight for ideal safety. I've lost 12 pounds in the last 3 weeks. Super excited!! After I get that last 25 off, I have to do blood work and get cleared by the phychiatrist.

Believe it or not, because my employer kept changing insurance carriers; it took me five years to get my surgery. I finally got it once my Medicare kicked in and I was retired. Then it took nearly a year because of an incompetent employee of my surgical team. In the two years prior to my surgery I lost 35 pounds on my own. In the five months since my surgery, I have lost 63 pounds.
My surgeon performed 5 surgeries on the day I received mine and I was the first due to my age (remember I said I was on Medicare?) and he has been astounded at how successful I have been. Of the five patients I have had the fewest post surgical issues and have lost the most weight. He attributed it to my exercise routine and food diary that I have been keeping in my Fitbit app. I strongly recommend a good exercise tracker and food diary.

Hi there. I work for DOE too. I however, have the HIP prime. I Am having a revision. You aren’t going to die. The medical field has made great stride. What surgeon are you meeting with? Each program require a different things. Emblem health who covers ghi and hip doesn’t require the 6 months visits anymore (stopped last year) that is what certain programs want. They want to be able to see that you are committed to this.
also if you’re afraid of acid reflux I will highly consider doing your research on the sleeve and GERD. I know of a few people at my program who revised from the sleeve to RNY due to developing gerd after the sleeve.

Repeatingthoughts got a reaction from ronjsteele1 in What's your approval process?
My process changed due to a health insurance change. So I now have to go back to my PCP Next week for a formal referral and pre approval before I go back to my surgeon next month. My insurance doesn’t ask for a weight management history or monthly check ins, they just want it to be a medical necessity.

    Hello,
I am so glad to hear April is you month. May date is the 7th of April 4 days after my 56th birthday. Happy Birthday to me...This is my gift to myself. I can not wait. I am in Michigan started the journey in May of 2019. Due to my insurance I had to go 6 months in a row with missing any appointments. on my last appointment I gained some weight so they gave me another month, to make sure I was living the bariatric life style...so I did good in November lost 11 lbs. my next goal was to stop smoking which I did (happy dance) and now I have to be 3 months smoke free, hence my date in April. I am very excited to do this I am dragging along so uncomfortably right now... let's do this!!!!!

    Hi!!
Congrats! I’m really hoping I get a date around that timeframe! I just started the process December 31st, but my insurance has no waiting period. I’ll finish with all necessary appointments March 9th & will be submitted that day. I’m so nervous! I literally sit and wonder “can this really happen for me?”. I’m excited for you! I think it’s cool how they already gave you a date prior to the insurance approval! What hospital & where are you from? I’m in Wisconsin & am going to Froedtert ❤️

    Hi Frustr!
I had a transoral bariatric surgery in 2009 that wasn't approved by FDA, as it was not working as they thought it would. I lost 100 lbs on my own! Working out and cutting out all the fried food i used to love and working out 6x a week. I was taking about 30k steps per day. Walking everywhere all the time. I maintained my weight loss for about 6 years....began fertility treatment which contribute to lots of weight gain, became pregnant and have struggled since, gained back almost all of my weight. HW 291=8, lowest 162, currently 250. Stopped working out, which doesn't help.
i am doing revision to a surgery that gave me zero restriction. I am currently debating on going back to my original surgeon or a new one. I have a scheduled appointment with a new surgeon for consultation. Very excited to see him. Hope that helps!

my surgeon suggest i do the bypass and i suggested he takes my suggestion of DS lol, which he agreed lol. The second surgeon is well known for DS and SIPS, so I am certain he will agree as well.
