    Vegetarian.

I’m l/o vegetarian, ~7 months out. Doing great, down +70 lbs from highest weight. I eat a variety of proteins— eggs, of string cheese, tofu, beans, “burgers”, seitan. It’s not a big deal, really. I don’t do great with whey protein all the time, but there are tons of vegan protein shake options.
  2. Squee! This thread got me curious so I did the calculation... I’m in the land of overweight, as well!!! 🤩
  3. You go girl! Congratulations!

    Shapewear?

The shaperlotus deal seems a bit too good to be true! I think I’ll try Maidenform and Shapermint and see which one I like more. Thanks for the recommendations!

    Shapewear?

I would love to hear/see recommendations for shapewear I can wear with jeans to make my tops look a little more orderly. My tummy area is a hot mess.

Preparing for Surgery. Advice: What you wish you knew

I had to get into the mindset that the tool is a tool, and it’s forever. Sometimes I just want to sit down and eat for comfort, and that’s not an option any more. Also, this is a process. I had the surgery and I had this “magical thinking” going on the the weight would melt away. I’m losing faster than ever, but it’s a pound at a time.

    Stalling for TWO MONTHS.

I’m a relatively short woman, and I couldn’t lose weight at 1,200 calories (pre-surgery). To lose any weight at all, I need to be well below that number. What is your height and bone structure? If you’re petite, you may need to lower your calories.
  8. Congratulations! What a great NSV!

    Super cold hands and feet?

I’m the same way, and it’s unfortunately not uncommon post-surgery. There are many threads on this topic, if you use the search function. I had surgery in December 2019. I wear slippers while home, and warm socks always. If that’s not enough, I made a foot warmer (flannel bag with rice in it, reheats in the microwave) that I use daily.

    Dehydrated And Low Blood sugar

It’s time to accept you had surgery (no do-overs!) and that right now you’ve gotta get reacquainted with your body. Put yourself on a timer and commit to sipping. Start experimenting with different drinks that are on your plan—and it’s ok to try savory drinks like broth or sweet drinks (like Gatorade). Teas of all types are great (watch for caffeine if your doc doesn’t like it). And these don’t have to be the tastiest drinks ever—just get them down. Temperature also may make a different—I’ve found that I have a really hard time with cold drinks, but that I can drink slightly warmed drinks really well. Surgery is a big change to be sure, but you have to figure out how you’re going to make it work. You have got this!
  11. I’ve found that post-surgery, I drink with less pain if I drink warm water instead of cold water. Perhaps consider experimenting with different temperatures?

    Little vent: spousal comments

I’m five days post-op. Literally, five days. Stitches, pain meds, learning to eat, all the hot mess. And my darling husband says, “You know, I’m not really attracted to thin women. I hope you don’t lose very much weight.” WTH. I’ve been working toward this goal for 13 months, and he just mentions this now. Seems like all those times i asked if he had any questions, comments, or input that this should have come up. I asked him to come to the education classes and he said we could talk after, which we did. I am furious.

    Post Multivitamins

This may sound simple, but my dietitian recommends Flintstones Complete. One chewable per day and done. I do also take a calcium and biotin supplement. For calcium, I use BariMelts (natural berry flavor). For biotin, I use vita fusion (blueberry chewable).

    No one has noticed ...

I figure that I was thankful when no one commented when I was *gaining* weight, so I’m going to be perfectly happy for no one to comment on my losses as well!
  15. I had a rny on 12/20. Have lost ~50 pounds since my high weight. Have 50 more pounds to lose. My hip and back pain is already gone — it’s amazing! I started working out with a trainer when cleared by my surgeon after surgery. I’m shocked by how much I can do already.
  16. My program supported soy, whey, egg, pea, and a half dozen other proteins
  17. Had a fun NSV today — was asked to participate in a video for work and totally fit in all of the “props” they required us to wear. So crazy!
  18. I have two questions that are admittedly silly. Background: Had a RNY on 12/20/19. SW was 205, CW is 185, stalled for 2 weeks at 185. (I'm female, 46 yo). 1. How much protein should I be eating daily? I've asked my NUT this question, and she says I should be "doing my best" to get in protein, but that they don't give out goal numbers. How am I supposed to know what the number I should be reaching, if they won't tell me? I then asked my surgeon, and he advised me to speak with my NUT. This seems ridiculously silly, so I'll ask you all: How much protein should I be eating daily? I exercise moderately 3x/week and have a sedentary job, if that helps at all. 2. When I visited with my surgeon for my four-week checkup, he said, "You've lost pretty much all the weight you're going to lose due to the RNY. Everything you lose from this point on will have to be through exercise." OK, that sounded really strange to me. I was four weeks out at the time. RNY is a tool, which I'm working, but just because I started with a relatively low weight, it doesn't mean that there's no weight loss, right? Because that's just crazy. I track calories religiously, and I'm averaging 500 cals per day, about 50 grams of protein. I'll lose some weight just because the calorie deficit, I would think. I'll be honest, I wouldn't even be checking with everyone, but I've been in the three-week stall for two solid weeks now, it is making me a bit crazy. I'm ok with a stall, I'm not ok with this being the end of weight loss. In writing this out, I think I feel better about getting medical advice from random people on the Interwebs, instead of my surgeon's office. Sigh.
  19. Oh my stars, this is exactly what i thought! I agree, it's time to amp up the protein, one way or another. AZhiker, thanks so much for this recommendation. It looks like I need ~10-15 more grams of protein per day. Also, I wanted to thank you for some of your posts on exercise. I've found them really inspiring. I've started lifting a few days per week, and I'm adding in some yoga. Once I get stronger (and hopefully restart the weight loss), I'm going to start running again. I really can't wait! Thanks so much for this bit of potential context. I was just so flummoxed when he said it -- I really should have asked a follow up question, but my mind just sorta went into a "what the heck!?!?" space. Thanks, folks, for the sanity check!
  20. I’m one month out today! So glad to have had this surgery—already seeing physical changes, and am eager to continue on the journey. Struggling a bit with getting in enough water, but I do better during the week. I’d also like to get me energy back, but I figure that will come with time. For little victories: I’m down 20 pounds from surgery, which I know isn’t a ton. That being said, I’m down from 2xl shirts to larges. My pants are at size 14, instead of 18-20s. That feels good. **Can folks tell me what your protein goals are? I’m in my mid-40s, female, ~185lbs. My program says they don’t give out protein goals, which in my opinion is just silly. **

    Dehydrated?

FitnessRN, how are you feeling today? Where you able to get a bit more hydration in today, and if so, are you feeling better?
  22. CheerfulLoser

    Dehydrated?

I’m about four weeks out as well, and am feeling the same way. It’s bad. I’m focusing on hydration today, and am wondering if I should get my potassium checked. I track my food and am doing ok with nutrients (due to supplements), with the exception of potassium.
  23. Have folks started getting their energy back? I’m feeling otherwise great, but just don’t have energy to get everything done. I know... we’ve had major surgery. It would just be nice to get that spark back.
  24. Had a RNY on 20 Dec, and things are going overall pretty well. Loving the soft / smooshy foods... my love affair with protein shakes is sadly o.v.e.r. for now. Hoping to start liking them again some day soon. I'm afraid the three-week weight stall has me in its grasp. I have always told myself that it's natural, to be stoic about it, it will surely pass, stay away from the scale... but golly I'm not feeling nearly as adult about it now that my scale isn't steadily dropping the weight. I've been bouncing around for about five days now on the same pound. It's fine, I know, but I'm just eager for more dropped pounds. 🙂 Starting weight: 228 Surgery weight: 205 Current weight: 187
