  1. So, I had VSG on July 25, 2019. I haven’t had any issues or stalls or anything for about 5 months. Then comes January. I lost about 5 lbs total that month. I had no changes in my diet or anything, and I was eating about 900 cals/day and going to the gym lifting/doing cardio 3-4 times a week. I gained and lost the same two pounds the last two weeks of that month. I had my birth control implant changed in December, so I started thinking that maybe hormones were playing a part because I was on point with everything else. Now it’s February, and I’ve lost 17 lbs since last Thursday (according to my scale). Let me explain. I usually only weigh myself in Wednesday’s, but since I hadn’t been losing, I was temporarily keeping track of my weight every couple of days. I weighed in at 244.4 last Thursday. Last Saturday, I weighed 238.7. I thought this was reasonable because maybe I had been retaining water and maybe I lost a couple of pounds. Fine. Yesterday, I weighed 234.5. I was shocked. I was expecting around the same number I had seen two days before. It’s worth noting that I only record my Wednesday weight. That’s the “official” one. The others are just to see if I need to make any tweaks. Well this morning, after weighing in at 234.5 yesterday, I weighed 227.5. HOW?!?! What is going on?!?! I weigh myself on the same scale wearing the same thing (which is nothing) each time. My brain can’t make sense of this. I stepped off the scale to clear it, let it turn off, then I stepped on again, and it was the same weight. Has this happened to anyone else? Because 17 lbs is like, first couple of weeks post-op numbers. I was afraid to record it because I’m terrified I’m gonna rebound or something. Any guidance you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

    What is happening?!?!

I’m pleased to report that I’m back up 6 of those 7 lbs this AM!! Thank the lord! 😂 I don’t know what the hell was going on. Thank you guys for the advice and trying to help me make sense of everything!!

    What is happening?!?!

Thanks for the advice! In this case, I didn’t care about the stall. I was more so concerned about losing 17 lbs in one week and being 6 months post-op. Us bariatric patients are a strange group. It seems like lose or not, we’re always finding reasons to worry. LOL! I’m just gonna go with what the scale says and not stress about it. Thanks again!!

    What is happening?!?!

I definitely see your logic here, but I’m working with a trainer, and I have some very specific fitness goals I’m trying to achieve. Weekly weigh-ins, measurements, and progress pics are necessary. If he adjusts my diet, he’ll have me step on the scale a couple of days later to see what effect it has on me. He’s worked with bariatric patients before, but this is type of loss is making him scratch his head too. Thanks for your input tho!
  5. Same! 22 lbs since 7/24! My surgeon said that’s average.
  6. 4 weeks post op and 20 lbs down since surgery! I met my goal for this four weeks! I was initially sad that I wasn’t losing as quickly as everyone else I saw, but my surgeon said that 20-30 is average for the first month, so I feel much better. Besides, I lost 21 lbs during the 2-week liquid diet, so I’m 41 down overall!
  7. Hey all! Just wanted to give a quick update now that the first 7 days are over! I was sleeved on 7/24. I was supposed to go home on 7/25, but I had such severe nausea and vomiting that I couldn’t get discharged until 7/26. I haven’t had any real pain, but the nausea has been a b****! It has just now slowed down. Luckily, I was sent home with a prescription for Zofran, so I’ve been taking it as directed. I’ve only lost about 7 lbs this first 7 days, but I did lose 21 lbs during the two week liquid diet, so I’m not really complaining. I know this is a marathon and not a sprint. Hope everyone else is doing well!!

I was the same with nausea. I take Zofran and it helps a little. I’m 7 days out now, and it’s a lot better.

    Shift Work

Fortunately, I walk A LOT at work. I can easily crank out 14,000+ steps. I can’t work out after work because I’ll get too wired to sleep. I’m still on a liquid diet, and when I go back to work, I’ll have another week of it. So my meals will be protein shakes. Going forward, I see myself taking tuna packets or chicken salad—just something small. I don’t really like to eat on the nights I work anyway. It just doesn’t feel right to eat a whole lot in the middle of the night.
  10. Just wanted to update everyone! I had my surgery on 7/24! I was supposed to only have an overnight stay, but I couldn’t keep anything down all day Thursday, so I earned an extra day. I was discharged today, and I still have some gas pain. Just trying to walk and sip. Prayers for everyone who still has procedures this month!
  11. YOU GUUUUYYYYYSS!! Surgery Wednesday morning, and I am So. Freaking. Pumped.

    Pre Operation Diet Question!

Just double check your instructions, tho. I’m on clear liquids only the day before my surgery, so yogurt would be out (because that’s a full liquid).

    start of 2 week diet

Good for you! I’m still holding up over here. I can’t believe I lost 18lbs the first week of this liquid diet! I think it’s because my job involves a lot of walking (I work on a pretty busy hospital floor). Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday at 0930! We’re so close you guys!!

    start of 2 week diet

12 pounds down since the start of this liquid diet!! Woo hoo! It hasn’t even been a week yet! Hope everyone else is making it. I finally feel like I’m not missing out on anything or starving all the time.

    start of 2 week diet

Y’all. Isopure unflavored is TRULY unflavored. I added it to my broth for the first time today, and I can’t taste it. It has none of that gross protein aftertaste. I got it from Amazon if anyone is interested. I just thought I’d share!! Hope everyone is doing well!

    start of 2 week diet

YOU CAN DOOOO IT!!!! WE can do it!! I’m so sorry you’re having headaches. I suffer from migraines myself, so I know how it is. I guess I have it a bit easier than most. I work nights (3 12hr shifts), so I spend a lot of the day asleep, and I’m not much of a night eater anyway. For me, my challenge is gonna be when I go to school (I’m a nursing student) and clinical on my off days. Everyone’s gonna be eating, and I’m just gonna be sitting there with my Jello and Protein shake.😩

    start of 2 week diet

Haha! YEESS! I’m off today (I work in a hospital), and I did what I usually do on my days off: wake up and decide what to eat. I was thinking of all these things until I realized that I was supposed to start the liquid diet today.🤦🏽‍♀️ The hunger isn’t terrible tho. I’m sipping liquids all day, so I’m not feeling it too much.

    start of 2 week diet

I started today, too! For me, it’s just trying to break the habit of actually eating. The hunger isn’t terrible yet, lol. But we got this! We’ll be on the other side soon enough. 😁 Feel free to talk if you need some moral support!!

    Pre Op Liquid Diet

Well to be fair, cream of wheat and oatmeal thinned with skim milk are both included on my post-op full liquid diet. But I agree they aren’t really best for pre-op since they are high in carbs, and the objective is to shrink the liver.

    Approved!!!

Hey guys! This is my first post here! I just wanted to share that I’ve been approved by my insurance for VSG!! I have Cigna insurance, and I only had to have one nutrition recommendation, one psych recommendation, a letter recommending me for surgery from a doctor who isn’t the surgeon (my PCP provided this), and a letter from the surgeon recommending me for surgery. The whole process took a couple of weeks because of my schedule, but I got the green light! I DID NOT complete a 3 month or 6 month (or any months, for that matter) physician supervised diet. The letter from my PCP was very general and just listed that they had been monitoring my weight and all of the things I had tried at home (Atkins, Weight Watchers, etc...). Next is getting with the scheduled to get a date!! Good luck to everyone!
  25. Usually, it’s not a concern unless your temp is 100.4 or higher. Then the concern would be for infection. Maybe take a look at your discharge paperwork and see if they included temperature parameters? It should tell you what things are concerning and when you should call your doc or go back to the hospital. Good luck! I hope it doesn’t get higher!
