    Total Gastrectomy anyone?

Hi all, Happy New Year!! Hope all is well with your new year. Update from original post: I was able to go home on Dec 24th (Yay!)with a feeding tube which was super annoying but I did t care, I was home. Being home wasn't the picnic I hoped it would be. I was so weak and nauseous the whole time. The antibiotics orally were awful and the shots I had to give myself were also not awesome. But what was awesome was being with my family, that made all the crap worth it. Now I'm back in the hospital (since Jan 9th actually). Had surgery on the 10th to remove my stomach. Surgery went well, pain was atrocious up until today the 15th, still there but much more tolerable. I was not able to eat or drink until yesterday when they did the leak test and I was approved for clear liquids SUPER YAY!!! So now i get water, flavored waters, jello, broth and tea. Yesterday was a good day [emoji4]. coughing has been a b***ch in regards to pain but all in all I'm on the right track. Next step is to get in 2-3 protien shakes today and tomorrow and maybe they'll let me go home in a couple days [emoji120] [emoji5] Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. Hi all, I had the sleeve done at the end of August and have had major complications from an undetected leak. We're talking I was on death's door but due to many prayers and wonderful doctors I'm still here. Been in the hospital since Nov 5th, doc says no matter how he does it I'll be home for Christmas, I'll just have a feeding tube so there's some good news. Just have to come back after the new year to finish fixing myself up. Anyway, one of the possibilities and the end case of all this is that they would have to remove my entire stomach and attach my esophagus to my small intestine. Is there anyone who has had their whole stomach removed? The doc makes it sound like it's no big deal but it just seems like a big freaking deal to not have a stomach at all. Stomach leaks

I would certainly mention it but I may just be trigger happy because of what I'm going through. Better safe than sorry especially since you've had experience with a leak before. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Stomach leaks

I'm just taking it one day at a time with baby steps. Kind of going crazy being stuck in the hospital but hopefully they're gonna get me out for a few days before the big surgery in January just to regroup and reframe my mind but I have to have a feeding tube , antibiotics and blood thinner shots so I dont know how they're gonna do it all because I've already had a pic line and 2 mid lines inserted and removed. One of the mid lines actually gave me a blood clot. May just have to hang in the hospital until January which I am not thrilled about. We will be consulting a lawyer about the original surgery, we just want to get me better and out of the hospital first and then we'll tackle that mess. Stomach leaks

So my latest update is... they went in and sutured up the leak and then we did a leak test a couple days later and there was just a tiny whisp of a leak barely anything to notice but to to be cautious the docs decided they wanted to to back in and put a stent it to see if it would heal itself. Low and be hold I go in for my next leak test and find that I have what looks to be a different leak but worse. Doc said stent may have made it worse... great. So now they're going to remove the stent Monday which I can't wait for, this stupid thing is uncomfortable and then I guess I'm back to having the total stomach removal on Jan 10th but on the upside and still slightly confusing, they're letting me have some water. I guess that's because my chest tube is grabbing it all. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Stomach leaks

I'm in the hospital right now because of a leak!!! I'm at the end of my journey and I've been here for a month, had 3 chest tubes because the leak got in my lungs and collapsed one. They fixed up most of my problems now they're working on the stomach part which sounds like it's going to involve a stent. Is a stent painful? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Total Gastrectomy anyone?

Wow, that must have been a shock. Is the pouch smaller than it would have been for say a "normal" bypass sized stomach? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

I know this is a super late reply but how did it go? I didn't have to do anything special, no 3-6 month diet. I believe my BMI at the time was roughly 48-ish. And I didn't have any comorbidities although I was working on having high blood pressure. I hope it worked out. I lost about 30 pounds before my surgery but I think they use the info from when you submit Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Stomach cramping

I'm about 10 days out from surgery and when I saw my surgeon for my 1 week I asked her about that, she said it was normal and that it would go away and it did just a few days later. I found sometimes taking a deep breath when the pain started helped significantly. Hang in there, it'll pass. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Anyone else NOT NPO for surgery?

I had my surgery a couple days ago and the night before they had me drink 2 Ensure Pre-Surgey drinks and I was to have another one in the AM. Each had 52g of carbs! I was told that it aids in recovery and to be honest I don't know if it was the drinks but I felt pretty darn good after my surgery. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Please help.... nausea.

This may or may not work for everyone... if you have Vick's vapo rub, sniff that a bit to see if it calms it down. Like I said, may not work for everyone but it works for me. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Surgery

Had mine this morning around 8-ish i guess, after a few delays. Not sure if it's the meds killing pain or could it be possible that I really don't have any gas pains, am I one of the fortunate ones? 🥳 Congrats Curlygirl! We did it, now let the fun begin, we got this. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

I have BCBS IL, I don't know if it's the same but honestly I didn't have to do anything special. I met the weight and BMI requirement and that was all I needed. Hope it's the same for you. Good Luck!!
  16. Hi All... I was originally scheduled for a June surgery but during the surgeon's last check of my labs she discovered my TSH levels were stupid high (75!!!) so everything g group d to a halt till I could get that under control. Well 2 1/2 months later everything is good TSH down to .48 and surgery scheduled for August 21st!! So here I am again on my pre-op diet. 3 shakes a day, fruits and veggies, broth, popsicles, jello... you know, the usual. I find that I'm not hungry so much but the excess acid in my stomach would lead me to believe otherwise. Regardless of that, I'm super excited everything seems to be in place now. Hope everyone who's had their surgery is doing well and bask of luck to all of us still to go [emoji847] Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    No family support

You know when I told my guy about this back in February he scoffed at me. Then I went to my first meeting, still he scoffed. I kept it all to myself, I didn't talk to him about it. My mom has been super supportive from the beginning asking questions and making me think through my decision. Basically playing the devils advocate which I appreciate, this is a big decision. Started having doctors appointments, my guy still didn't want to discuss it but wasn't being as negative. Few more appointments and he started asking some questions. Had a huge... and I mean epic argument where I learned part of his problem was that I made the decision without him, that we didn't discuss it. I had to give in, he was right. Without him saying it I know he's worried and nervous, he doesn't like hospitals and he's worried something will happen, not death exactly but something that will hurt me and that upsets him. ...And then all of a sudden. We had family come in from AZ and when he picked them up from the airport somehow, I'm still not sure why... HE told them about my surgery. He has also told a friend of ours and talked to another friend whose wife had it and discussed plastic surgery after with him. What The??? OK and then like a switch he's asking questions, trying to help me prepare, making jokes about recording me just out of recovery and posting it on facebook. I don't know what turned him but I am super stoked about it. I thought I was going to have to go at it alone. He's still kind of sabotaging me a little, telling me to eat even though I'm on my 10 day pre-op diet but that's just because that's how he is and that's part of why I'm super overweight because he always thinks I don't eat enough. Long story short... (too late) I hope this happens for you. That once your family sees that it's for your betterment and health and that you're serious that they will come around 🤞😊

    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

Alright June gang... so June 4th is the date... 09:45 is the time!! Unless you count the 2 hours prior I need to be at the hospital. So we'll say 07:45!! Woo Hoo!! Super excited... super anxious. Worried I won't be prepared post-op with the things I need. Start my pre-op diet today of 3 high protein shakes a day with a sprinkle of fruits and veggies and assorted clear liquids. So far so good but that's because I've got enough to do to keep me distracted. And as odd as it sounds, I have 5 days of work left, 1 is a 16 hour day and 2 are 12 hour days and I'm actually thankful for that. I'm going through ups and downs where I get super nervous about the changes I'm going to be making, how they affect me and the people around me and then I get excited and giddy about feeling and seeing the outcome of those changes but then I slide down again and get physically anxious. It's such a roller coaster and I'm along for the ride "In it to Win it (or lose it actually)"
  22. Let's see, from first informational seminar to surgery date... just under 3 months, March 9th to surgery on June 4th. I'm in IL and have BCBS. It was kind of a whirlwind. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Insurance Approval

I have BCBSIL and I actually didnt have any additional requirements besides what my program required. I started March 9th with the seminar, met the surgeon, nutritionist, dietitian, psychologist, had an upper GI. My insurance was submitted April26th and approved about a week later (took the docs office 2 weeks to tell me about it [emoji36]). Got my date of June 4th. Mind you I still have to get cleared by my PCP (tomorrow), meet the surgeon again (May22) and get bloodwork and an EKG. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

    June 2019 Surgery Siblings!

It only took about a week and then another week and called from me to the docs office to kind of nudge them and be like... what the? It's been approved already, what's taking you so long to contact me but in a much nicer way. I also found out the submitted it for the wrong surgeon and as out patient vs inpatient so they had to resubmit [emoji36] buuuutttt... they said it won't take long because they already approved the procedure and that the surgery scheduler will contact me tomorrow [emoji847][emoji16]🤩 SUPER EXCITED!!! 25. Hey all!! I've just completed all the fun prerequisites and doctor's meetings and what not. I have blue cross blue shield Illinois and was wondering how long they took to approve?
