  1. I too would be interested in knowing this question. I also would like to know if surgery for a calcified gallbladder and hernia could wait for 6 months as I have to have a supervised 6 month diet and would hate to think I would be those 2 surgeries before the WLS in 2016.

  2. I am over at MFP too and have just started today to track my food intake while I am on this 6 month supervised diet. Feel free to send me an friend's request my Id is ssbeadlady. I love to make beaded 3 dimensional items. In the past I have done personal journals.Last Christmas I gave out themed bookmarks and journals to all my gal friends. Deals had a fantastic special at that time and I kept one for myself. I think it might be a good idea to locate mine and maybe start writing about this journey. I am sure it will be very helpful in so many ways.

  3. What a fantastic thread this turned out to be. Thank you to each and everyone of you. I have been dieting for the past 15 years off and on and have managed to lose weight but now I am looking to get WLS. Last month I started my 6 month supervised diet toward the sleeve surgery. Reading this thread has taught me a lot about what the future might be like. I see mention of myfitnesspal and I am also over there. I would love to become friends with anyone here who is also over there. My id at MFP is ssbeadlady. I am all alone in this journey and sure could use friends in both places, so feel free to send me a invite as I have a very long journey.

  4. These diet that you ladies are speaking about are the supervised diets you are to be on, Correct? I see the Dr again next Wednesday so I am going to ask him again if he really wants me to continue with Nutrisystem. Maybe he misunderstood me or I misunderstood him. It seems odd that they don't have me on the similar diets to what you ladies are on.

I agree Mimisan my Nut seemed more interested in the after surgery diet than the 6 month supervised diet. I left saying she didn't tell me new. I had read the sleeve booklet the Dr gave me before I met with her.I really felt it was a waste of 3 hours of my time a it is a 45 minute ride one way to this place.

  5. I am also new and had what I think is my first and only meeting with the NUT on June 30th. I saw the Dr for the first time June 17th. During the Dr visit he told me my insurance required a 6 month supervised diet. I was under the impressing I would be weighing in and seeing the Dr for the next 6 months. You all seem to have to report into the NUT. When I met with the NUT she told me what I had to do after the surgery not before. When I asked what diet I was to follow she said "What did the DR tell you to do? I told her I had been following Nutrisystem for the past year but had only lost about 35 pounds and the DR told me to doing NS. She asked me if I wanted the surgery and I told her yes so she said well keep doing NS. But I only lost 35 pounds in a year that is hardly nothing and I felt that gave you too much carbs. As in addition to their food I was suppose to eat 5 more carbs. She said well then cut back to 1 carb. I have done this for the past 2 weeks and have lost 10 pounds. That was the only advise she gave me for the next 6 months. I don't know maybe I am wrong and didn't hear right correctly what the DR was saying. I weigh in again on the 22nd with I believe the Dr so I am more prepared to ask him questions about this 6 month journey.

I am doing this all alone as I have no family and all my friends are obese and are dead set against surgery so I haven't told them. I sure could use you three as friends, I hope you don't mind if I send you a friends request.

  6. Hi Nurses I am not a nurse but I thought this might be a good thread for me to ask some questions of you all if you don't mind.

I am try to get the sleeve and saw the WL surgeon on June 17th for the first of 6 months of supervised diet. .My PCP is working with this surgeon. Both the PCP and the surgeon looked at my tummy and asked me to get a CT for the possible hernia we all thought I have. The PCP set up the CT and I had it on Wednesday. On Thursday the PCP called me in. I do not see the WL surgeon again until the 22nd of July. After what the PCP told me I am really scared I may not even qualify any more for the sleeve.

I was told I have a porcelain gallbladder in addition to the hernia. Plus the CT showed a 9mm nodule on my lung, a tumor in my urinary bladder, and acute kidney failure with lesion of renal medullary necrosis.

I am 59 years old and weigh 342 after having lost over 155 pounds on my own. I had no symptoms what so ever so I am shocked all this was shown in the CT.

Would any of you wonderful Nurses know what my future looks like with these issues? Thank you so much for any replies I do get. I didn't find any other group of people who might have the knowledge of these issues than you all.

  7. I purchased the Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies and so far I'm enjoying reading it. There are recipes for the smooth phase, soft phase, breakfasts, lunches & brunches, appetizers, poultry, beef, lamb, pork, fish, seafood and vegetarian Entrees entrees, as well as side dishes, Soups & stews, Snacks, smoothies and Desserts. I have not made any of the dishes mainly because I want to read the book first and then try the recipes that sound the best. Good luck finding what you want.

Thanks for the info on the WLS cookbook. I didn't realize it was free but when I entered the name in the search engine I found a PDF of it for free.

  8. I haven't had the surgery yet. But I do have the post diet information from the Dr already and it says no coffee or tea for 2 months. How is it that some of you can take the Smooth Move tea? Are you taking this right after your sleeve or several months later? Just a bit confused.

It's an herbal tea not a caffeinated one. I'd clarify that one with your doc myself as I'm finding it MUCH easier to get down peppermint or chamomile tea (unsweetened) than Water these days. It's really helping me stay hydrated.

OH Thanks for that bit of info. The Nut did say I could have herbal teas. Something I very seldom have. Is green tea consisted a herbal tea. If it isn't green tea than I usually have black. So I gather black tea is out of the questions for at least 2 months when the surgery happens sometime in 2016

  9. Having gone through an extended approval process myself (took a year),and now just weeks away from surgery, my biggest hope is that someday there will be a standardization of the hoops wls candidates have to undergo.

They are so vastly different and confusing now, with no two alike, that I'm sure there are some people who just end up giving up. And that is so sad.

Not only a standardization of hoops but also of what the post op diet is that must be followed.Based on my research every Dr has a different plan. For example My Dr says week 3 should be one egg only and what I had for the first 2 weeks. I do not see anyone else that was required to eat only one egg. By week 3 I have seen people are eating pureed foods.

  10. Except for my roommate knowing I am doing this alone also. Most of my friends are obese and are against WLS and I only told one coworker and I know she will not tell a soul. They know I have had a hernia since 2012 so when I do go in for the surgery they will all think it is for the hernia. I only work 2 days a week and often do not have lunch so I don't see any problems with lunch time. If any one does ask I will just tell them that the hernia affected my stomach as well. I am willing to tell a little white lie to avoid all the questions and drama. I am just beginning as I have a 6 month supervised diet and will have surgery some time in 2016. I sent you a friends request. Anyone else feel free to send friends request to me too. Thanks

  11. Leshell I am just starting the process so I am no where near the preop diet. I have to go through the 6 month supervised diet. Shrinking peach if I read correctly you were on a 6 month supervised diet as well and based on your profile it looks like you lost a lot of weight before the surgery. May I ask what kind of a diet you were on to lose so much weight? It seems like you have your head in the right place.

Am looking for friends and hope you both don't mind if I send a friends request to the both of you as I can use all the support I can get.

  12. Hi Everyone I am in Lake Worth and had my initial meeting with Dr Vaughan. I had my first NUT meeting this past Monday. My insurance requires that I have a 6 month supervised diet and than maybe surgery can take place in 2016. I have been on Nutrisystem since June of 2014. Dr Vaughan told me to just continue with that plan. I had only lost 44 pounds this past year. So after seeing the NUT we reduced the 5 carbs NS wanted me to have down to 1 or 2. Maybe this will help me to lose more weight than I have already lost. I once was 497 and over many years have reduced down to were I am now.

I have no family and the only one I have told about my decision is my room mate. All my friends are obese and are against the surgery. So it is best I not say anything to them. So any friends locally would be wonderful. Feel free to send my a friends request.

  13. Thanks Ladies for the info on your diets. I guess I am just disappointed as I was hoping to get something new beside what I have been doing for the past year without good results. I see the Dr again on July 22 so I will see what happens between now and than.

Congratulations on the 10 pounds gone already.. I wish I could lose faster.

  14. Had my pre-insurance testing today. Only to find out I have to have supervised weigh ins for 6 months. I was a little down. I also have to lose some weight but they didn't tell me how much yet. I am thinking positive that this will help me in the long run to be successful with surgery. But I still feel down. Anyone else go through this?

Yeah, for my insurance I needed to go to the doctor for 6 months straight and have to meet with a psychologist and nutritionist once. There was no need to lose weight per se, but they put you on a very strict pre op diet so that you lose weight. I lost 32 pounds on the pre op diet.

Yes but that preop diet was just before the surgery wasn't it? You were not on that diet for the 6 months supervised time were you? 32 pounds in what time frame?

  15. I went to the WL Dr on June 17th. He told me I also had to do a 6 month supervised diet yet he didn't give me a diet. I had been following NS on my own for a year started at 390 and had lost only 44 pounds . The DR told me the NUT was not available the day I was there and to continue to follow the NS program.

This past Monday I saw the NUT. She asked me a bunch of questions about my previous diets and my physical limitations. She then explained the post op diet I would have to follow after surgery which will not be until 2016. When she asked if there were any questions I said yes what diet am I suppose to be following for the supervised 6 months. She asked me what diet the Dr gave me and I told her he told me to continue with NS. Well then that is what you follow. I told her I wasn't happy as it wasn't giving me good results and I was expecting another diet from her. She asked me if I wanted the surgery and when I said yes then being on NS will prove to the insurance you have difficulty losing weight.

This attitude of the NUT and the surgeon is not sitting well with me. I personally feel NS is too high in carbs for me as in addition to their foods they want me to eat 5 additional carbs. I think on my own I will reduce that down to 1 carb per day as I really would like to lose more weight before the surgery.

What pre op 6 month supervised diet are you all on?

  16. I have to follow a supervised diet for six months, and I already have 2 months down of that.

Sandy May I ask what kind of a supervised diet were you given for the 6 months? Have you been losing? Did the Dr or the NUT give you the diet?

I went to my NUT for the 1st visit as I am suppose to follow a 6 month supervised diet and she gave me nothing. She said she doesn't do that. All she did was tell me what I am suppose to do after surgery in 2016. She asked what diet did the Dr give me and I told her he said to stay with NS.I have been on NS on my own for a year and have only lost 44 of more than 200 pounds. When I told her that she said well that is what you should do than as we want the insurance to see you can't lose well on a diet. I was in shock and so confused as I thought the idea was to begin to change eating habits and lose weight before surgery.
