    Coffee protein drinks

Yep they have over 100 different samples. They send them in little plastic baggies. I have ordered from them since 2013 and liked their Syntrax drinks and HealthSmart . The Healthsmart hot chocolate Protein Drink in the morning with instant coffee added has been my morning drink for years. However there are no Healthsmart drinks as samples. Bummer. But that is ok as I now use Bariatricpals store to order from as they cost less.
  2. Welcome to the other side of the bench. Are you still in the hospital? Remember to sip your Water whenever you can. I went in on a Tuesday and left n Thursday. I don't remember much of Tuesday or Wednesday morning as I slept a great deal too. I do remember I had to breath into this plastic thing many times throughout the day as I had to have my lungs working better. I forgot the name of that plastic machine. Finally on Wednesday afternoon they got me out of bed with a walker. I am disabled and can't walk well. With the PT following me I walked halfway down the hallway and came right back to the bed. Only had that one walk so I had really bad gas pains that radiated into my shoulders. Once I was home I tried walking more and after about 2 weeks the gas pains left me. Those gas pains wee more painful then the incisions. I am in Florida too Lake Worth area but had my surgery in Jupiter in Jan 2016. If your interested send me a friends request.

    The Pre Op Diet

Northstar I do have a few suggestions and thoughts. First off I am a teacher and I have worked with adults who have brain injuries. I know it requires step by step instruction and guidance. I am 6 month post op and had to be on a 6 month pre op diet. Since last June I have lost 110 pounds and my surgeon is very pleased with my progress. I am not as knowledgeable as many of the veterans who did post but I do feel I could help you if you need more help. If you are wanting further info other than what I wrote here feel free to become a friend. 1. Your dietitian may have said all the cheese you wanted but your paperwork says a small amount of cheese. serving is 1 oz. That tells me you shouldn't have all the cheese you want. This plan doesn't look like the typical shrinking liver pre-op as they are usually for 2 days to 2 weeks, The first part of the plan is what you are to do for the first 4 weeks. The second part looks more like the liver shrinking part. 2. Anyhow these first 4 weeks you are to have 2 meals of protein drinks so have a hot chocolate protein drink for breakfast, have a snack of a sugar free jello or popsicle or broth. Have a protein meat and some type of low carb vegetable for lunch. Have an afternoon snack of a low carb, low sugar protein drink. Have your dinner similar to your lunch but choose a different protein meat. If your still hungry you can have an evening snack of sugar free jello popsicle or broth or a cheese or turkey stick. The last 2 weeks you cut out your lunch or dinner meal and have a protein drink. You can have up to 3 to 4 of them a day. If you get the kind that have 30 grams of protein and are less than 200 calories you will have a sufficient amount of protein just on the shakes alone. 3. As for Atkins I wouldn't do that as they are small portions and some of those frozen foods have very high sodium in them and higher carbs than I think the dietitian wants you to have. However if you are very selective and stick with maybe 3 or 4 of the beef and chicken dinners a week you might be ok. 4. Other posters here and on your other posting from yesterday gave you some good ideas and suggestions for food choices as well as exercising in the pool. 5. One other thing you might want to do is cook all your meats within a day or 2 of buying them. Then portion out 3 to 4 oz for each meat and place them into foil and then all of those same meats into a big baggie with the meat name, date and oz. During the week pull out a foil pack from the bag before you go to work and place it in the refrigerator. After work all you have to do is heat the meat up for a minute or two in the microwave add a vegetable and your ready to eat. It sure cut down on all the prep and cleanup during the week. You can do this and lose the 15 pounds in the 2 months. I did something like this and lost 20 pounds in 2 months.

    Alcohol.

I am 6 months post op and just had my first drink last week after a very bad day at work. It took me 4 hours to drink it. I really didn't enjoy it much as it was a limearita, (that my room mate had on hand) but it calmed me down and I slept that night. I doubt I will have anything else for a while. Am really not much of a drinker to begin with.

    Any Florida Sleevers?

Kristen Thanks for the word of encouragement. I see you are almost 2 year post op and that you had the sleeve as well. You stated what I eat is more important than exercise. However I find if I do not exercise I do not lose much. My surgeon doesn't have a NUT and I am getting very little guidance at this stage as to what I should be eating. I am 6 1/2 months post op and wondering (based on what you said) what kinds of foods at this stage I should be eating. I am trying my best to get in 60 to 80 Protein, low carb less than 100 and those aren't from Pasta or breads etc. Getting about 800 to 1000. Still drinking 1 or 2 protein drinks a day (plus 64 oz of water) as I can only eat 3 to 4 oz of protein a meal and very seldom have room for vegetables. Does this sound right for where I am or should I be doing something different food wise? By the way I did get back on my bike and rode for 50 minutes today. So you didn't really have anyone give you any guidance on how much you should be eating? I had my surgery in Mexico so I didn't have access to a NUT either but I worked closely with my primary doctor at home. I would encourage you to read about Whole30. It is a clean way of eating that focuses on quality protein, veggies, fruits and fats. It is tough but teaches you a lot about how your body reacts to food and you usually lose a decent amount by following the program. I've completed 3 rounds of Whole30 if you have any questions about it but a lot is just reading the info on the website. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App My surgeon just said to keep doing what I am doing at my 6 month checkup. Am staying away from a lot of foods that are not so clean. Not following Whole 30 but thanks for the info.
  6. I had a 1 week followup after surgery at the surgeons office and he stated I had lost 13 pounds.

    Pre-op sleeve newbie

Yes I lost 145 on my own before I even saw the surgeon. I did it with1 year on Weight Watchers and 1 year on Nutrisystem. When I saw the surgeon he wanted me on a 6 month High Protein, low carb diet and I lost another 38 pounds and was finally able to have my sleeve at 314. However I was not diabetic

    Gallbladder removed :/

I had lost 145 pounds on m own before my first meeting with the surgeon. I knew I had gall stones and told him so, so he took mine out the day of my sleeve surgery as well as a hernia repaired. Three surgeries in one day for me.
  9. Very frustrated with the fact that I weigh the same as others and am the same height and I am not wearing the size 16 & 18 that they are wearing. I am not even close to that size yet. Why are our bodies so different and when will I be out of the X's ?

    1. Djmohr

      Djmohr

@WLSResources/ClothingExch is absolutely correct. You have to remember that everyone is shaped differently and depending on where you carried your weight, you will have loose skin that effects sizing. And every manufacturer sizes differently.

I wear an 8 in some jeans on the bottom but have to select a 10 in others. I have tried on and fit into a 6. It is so whacked.....you must must must try on everything before you buy it. I used to be in a 26 top and a 24 bottom......big changes in my clothing sizes. I wear either a med or a large or a 10 or 12 on top while my bottom is smaller.

Lastly I would say, while your body is in rest or stall mode, it seems to almost reshape itself. So while I wasn't losing weight, I was losing inches in places and my clothing was getting smaller. It makes no sense to me but that is how it worked. Be patient.

I think muscle has a lot to do with it too. It weighs more, but you look smaller because of it. 2 years ago I lost a lot of weight running. When I was at the same weight I am right now, I looked much smaller. I've been trying to fit into some of those same clothes and they don't fit. I'm fattier than I was then. :-(

When I used to work out all the time, I weight 160 but wore a size 6/8. That was crazy!!! It had to do with muscle mass and tone.

    Any Florida Sleevers?

Yep not feeling like yourself isn't a good feeling for me either. It affects my desire to exercise, work and my friendships. I just don't like the way it makes me feel. I hope this feeling leaves soon for all of us.

    Book on gastric sleeve

Yep go to the Bariatric Store and buy the big book on the gastic sleeve by the owner of this forum Alex. I read it and was very well prepared for everything. https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/weight-loss-book/products/the-big-book-on-the-gastric-sleeve
  13. Bufflehead was right on with what she said. I also felt the same way until I learned it was ok. I didn't feel restriction during the liquid phase either. Mine liquid phase was for 2 weeks. After the liquid phase I got to add 1 egg each day to the liquids for a week. Then moved onto soft foods. Once I was eating soft foods I felt restriction within 2 to 3 spoonfuls. It was a slow process for me to get through the other phase and learn to eat again. I am 6 months out as of July 26th and just now am able to eat 3 to 4 oz of meat and a l tablespoon of vegetables for my dinner meal. I am still drinking a shake or two otherwise I wouldn't get in all my Protein. Good luck getting through the different phases and I hope they go as smoothly as this liquid phase is.

    Dry Mouth

I feel for you as I have always had dry mouth even before surgery. I use to drink 3 to 4 liters of Water and would have lots of trips to the bathroom. I also used the ACT dry mouth lozenges when I wasn't close to a bathroom. It was really bad for me the 24 hours before surgery. I wasn't allow to have anything to drink or suck on from midnight before surgery until 1 pm when they took me for surgery. It was horrible. I was trying to create more saliva as my mouth was so dry my throat was hurting. After surgery for the first 5 months I didn't have dry mouth yet I drank the required 2 liters of water which was a lot less than before surgery. Now 6 months post op my excessive dry mouth and thirst has returned. I was never diabetic nor am I now. I have no idea why I have had this problem for most of my adult life. I have started using ACT lozenges again and have just learned to deal with it.
  15. Sharon Thanks for the link. I am 60 and have always had issues with clothing since childhood because of my size. I remember going with my Mother to buy clothing and she always wanted me to wear black, navy and brown solids. I love colors and hated not only the colors she picked but the styles as well. Our shopping trips always turned into crying tantrums for me. Once I was old enough to buy my own clothing I went for very colorful print clothing but still had issues with styles. Hopefully when I get to my goal weight I will be able to enjoy shopping. However I will need a personal shopper to help me with the style today that is good for my age and shape.
  16. I have been in the 5X and above category for so long I guess I do not know that much about today's sizes of clothing. What is the difference between Women and Misses? Is there some kind of a size chart available for Women and Misses? I feel like I have no fashion sense and will need to educate myself of today's trends. Regardless of what it is you are so much smaller and I can't wait for that to happen to me too. Keep going strong, I plan too.

The Brain Drain: Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

Wow this article couldn't have come at a better time for me. I am 6 month post op from a sleeve surgery, gallbladder removal and hernia repair. Have lost 70 pounds since those surgeries. However just this past week I fell again (have very bad back and hips for over 26 years and can't walk without aids.) and my hernia has come back. My weight loss has slowed down, perhaps due to my not having been bike or swimming as much as I should be. Since the fall and hearing about the hernia being back I have fallen into a depression and have said the same things your client did. I need to regain my footing but not sure how to do this. It helps though to know I am not alone and that this happens to others.
  18. I found this thread from your posting of today saying 1 year post op. I am so happy for you. You have lost a huge amount of weight in the 1 year since your surgery. Did I read this posting correct in July you had lost down to 229 and are in a size 18. Wow that is wonderful! You are only 1 inch taller than I am. I am currently 243 and have no idea what size I am as I have been sewing in all my clothing. To think that maybe I could someday be wearing a size 18 again like you are would be so wonderful. Now one month later and even smaller have you gotten into a smaller size? You keep going strong and you will be to your goal real soon.

    Any Florida Sleevers?

So nice to see a Florida thread that is still active. The South Florida threads seemed to have died, no activity there in many months. I am in the West Palm Beach area and had my sleeve, gallbladder and hernia done in Jan of this year. Have lost 71 pounds since my surgeries but overall lost 254 pounds from my highest weight. Still have over 80 pounds to lose and I have notice my weight loss is slowing down. This post month I haven't lost much weight. I am sure it is because I haven't been biking much due to the horrible heat down here. However I was doing Water aerobics. For those who don't know me I have very little ability to walk due to back and hip problems. Well this Tuesday I fell in the house. I was able to get myself up, which I am grateful for, as last year I couldn't. However I seem to have fallen into a bit of a depression and haven't even been doing the water aerobics. Not sure how to get myself out of this funk. Have any of you fallen into a funk only 6 months post op? what did you do to get out of it? Anyhow it is good to see a Florida thread that is still active.
  20. Since last Tuesday's fall I have been in kind of a depression. Not really sure what is going on as I did succeed in getting myself off the floor, which I am very pleased with, yet haven't exercised at all this week. Sleep has been lousy too. Since losing the extra body weight my own body cushion is gone. Since having such lousy sleep lately this weekend I got my bed foam cushion out of storage and my room mate and I put it on the bed. I had taken it off years ago when I had switched beds. Last night's sleep was not that much different than the night before. Hopefully within the next few days with this extra bed cushion I can get some better sleep and get out of this funk I am in.

I hope you start feeling better. I'm an insomniac (which doesn't help my depression). My surgeon prescribed Trazadone (sp) to help me sleep. It's actually an anti-depressant that isn't used much any longer because it causes drowsiness. Fortunately, it's one of those drugs people who've had WLS can take (the Advil PM and even Tylenol PM were out). So you might talk to your doctor next time you see them. I grok you about the lack of padding! My tailbone is in constant pain now, and that's with an ugly little coccyx pillow! Take care!

    Caffeine

Start slowly decreasing your intake and you shouldn't get the headaches. During my 6 month supervised diet I slowly cut back so by December I was off of coffee completely and had no headaches at all. In my case I was not allowed to have coffee for 2 months after surgery. The Dr said something about the acid causing problems with the 3 surgeries he did on me. I gave it up 1 month before surgery. Started drinking it again mixed with my bariatric Protein hot chocolate at 2 1/2 months post op. I only drink 1 big 16 oz cup of the mixed coffee/protein hot chocolate in the morning and get plenty of Water during the day.

    Major (Re-) lifestyle change

Thanks for your post. There are many layers to vegetarianism. I've done it for many years and have never had a protein deficiency. As the previous person stated there is protein in Beans, vegetables, dairy etc... I will be what is considered a "lacto-tarian" which means that I consume all dairy only excluding meats. Protein shakes are also a great source to meet protein needs as well. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Oh ok thanks for the added info. Now I have a better understanding.

    Major (Re-) lifestyle change

I have never gone vegetarian, so I don't know a lot about this way of eating. I also don't know how much Protein you are suppose to eat on your plan. However I know mine is 80 to 100. II am wondering how you would be getting that much protein eating vegetarian only. I would imagine you wouldn't have any energy and your hair would start to fall out. Could you please explain how a vegetarian diet with a VSG works.

    pRE-OP DIET

I was on a 6 month high Protein low carb diet ! Monday 24 hours before surgery I was suppose to have nothing but liquids. However I started on Sunday with 48 hours of liquids and that day was my Birthday. We celebrated the night before. Monday from Midnight on I was not allowed to drink even Water. I was not even allowed to suck on an ACT for the dry mouth. My surgery was at Tuesday 1 pm and for me to go for 13 hours with only my saliva to moisten my dry mouth was very difficult.
