Duck: my doctor told me the exact same thing, if he couldn’t do the bypass he would do the sleeve. I think it’s just to cover their bases but my bypass was successful. I think that’s a pretty common line

I was absolutely terrified going in, plus it was my first surgery as well. I had no idea what to expect, but I'm glad that I didn't have any issues to speak of (in surgery, that is.) It's odd to think about how the 'safer' surgery is the one where most of your stomach is cut away, lol. 🤔

My first few weeks I did alright, but now I am having a great deal of nausea and sickness, but no GERD or reflux, thankfully. My nurses seem to think it's normal given my surgery date wasn't so long ago, but told me to contact back if it continues beyond the 2nd month out, to consider more testing and see if anything else is wrong. So for now, it's nausea medication and carefully watching the foods I eat so I don't get sick. 😶

See you had your own personal"reasons" for going with the sleeve and that's your prerogative.
I have no fear of surgery and I believe bypass will give me better results in the long run and I'd rather my inside be rerouted than having 80% of my stomach thrown in the bin thank you.
I want the restriction,I need the malabsorption, I want the dumping so I'll never want to go near any junk food again!
So yes it is an individual choice and I'll keep going until I find the dr who agrees with me with my bmi being over 40 RNY is my best choice I want to do it right and once only..not have multiple surgeries.
I hope you don't suffer from reflux or GERD and good luck.

My options were the sleeve or bypass, and the surgeon recommended a sleeve first. That was also my first choice, as I'm not really interested in doing a bypass to be quite honest. The sleeve is touted as safer and that it has less complications than the bypass, and nothing is 'off limits' on the sleeve as well, which appealed to me. I am the type of person that if you say 'no', then I immediately want to do the forbidden thing, lol.

Mostly it came down to safety for me though, honestly. I admit that I have also heard of more 'horror' stories with the bypass also, so that helped to affect my choice. My surgeon did say that if I wasn't very successful on the sleeve though, in a year's time, she would very likely approve me for a revision to another kind of WLS. She said it wouldn't be bypass though.

    He is a great Dr.
This was when I was asking questions. about worst case scenarios. If something should happen, and I needed to have a bypass instead of a sleeve.. He Said we know what surgery we are doing before hand, and that would never happen, but if I choose to have something like the Duodenal Switch, and he couldn't complete it due to scar tissue or some major unforeseen issue, then since he was already in there, he would do what he could.(bypass/sleeve) as I was already under.

My doctor does not recommend the bypass over the sleeve unless someone has GERD or there is another medical reason not to get sleeved. I'm sure she would do bypass if someone had a reason for doing it. She's runs one of the topic hospital WLS programs in Boston.
But the practice of going and and seeing what kind of scarring and issues someone has and then deciding which surgery to do is more common than you would think.

i had servere gerd, and the sleeve could make it worse. so i had no choice i had to get the bypass. honestly, if you do what you are supposed to the bypass isnt that bad. ive never had a problem with dumping and all my medical conditions are gone. sleep apnea, gerd, high blood pressure, pre diabetic, everything is gone day 1.

My Dr. told me that if he could not preform the bypass, and could only do the sleeve, then he would do the sleeve, and advise me afterwards.

I feel like I’ve just been told off! Being smart before you let someone cut out your vital organs is a bit of an obvious point, but granted, you don’t know me, I COULD be an idiot ,so thanks? However, I assure you, i’m not.
In your defence,i don’t think I was very clear, the 2-3 weeks timeline is AFTER you’ve provided all your Medical history and had evaluations. It not just cut and cheque and a cut a stomach.
They have told me the barrage of tests he’d need to do first, including blood test, group blood test and rh factor, biochemistry analysis, (ALAT,ASAT, bilirubin, cholesterol,HDLP,LDLP, triglycerides, INR, APTL, prothrombin, urea, creatinine, (Na+,K+,CL-, HCO3, Ca2+), TTH, glucose, total serum Protein, chest x Ray, fibrogastroduodenosvopy with anaesthetic, heliocobacter pylori test, ultrasound, ECG and Hep C .
A lot of which would be performed at the clinic, if you’re not suitable for surgery when you get there, they return your funds minus a deposit to cover the travel/accommodation of getting you there.
I think your own experience has made perhaps made you a tad prejudice to other processes. Irresponsible and reckless are strong words. I understand the process is different in the US but when you’re paying private for anything, things move quicker, there are fewer stages and hoops to jump because you’re not costing anyone else anything. If someone want to claim a major surgery on their insurance, obviously the insurance company isn’t going to make it half as easy for you as they would a private paying client. This why I need to make sure I’m doing as much research as possible to know I’m making an informed decision. Including the advice they give you for preparing before a surgery.
As as per the Water comment, I meant with meals-I didn’t specify that, so my bad. I’m not the biggest drinker in all honesty though, but I’m aware of the requirements and I’ve done plenty of Keto diets before that require a LOT more than the recommended 1.9litres a day that I’ve seen and managed just fine. Someone pointed out protein water as an option too, because I struggle with the texture of shakes, so that’s an extra incentive to drink.
i know I’m out of other optoins. “One last attempt to do it myself” for me, was at least 2 or 3 attempts ago. I don’t need a huge diet before surgery , just need to eat healthily for health’s sake because my BMI is 35.8 which isn’t far from their minimum requirements as it is.
I’d say i’ve made my mind up to be honest. I’m going to follow the clinic over the next month, there’s a few more people that I’m speaking to that are going for surgery this week and they’re going to be journaling their experiences over the next 2-4 weeks and if i’m Still happy with the regimen , i’m Hoping to call and book this summer

Thought I would post an update! I decided to go with the bypass. In the long run I think I will find the most benefit from the surgery because of its effects on diabetes. I got a call from my surgeons office and my surgery is tentatively scheduled for March 19!

Hi my name is Jen! I am just beginning my pre-op testing and had my initial consult with my surgeon this past Friday. I’ve done a lot of research about the sleeve and the bypass but I am struggling with choosing which would be the best for me. I’m curious how did you choose the best option for you? What was the deciding factor for the surgery you chose?

Thanks everyone for your responses! I appreciate it. I originally was thinking that I wanted to get the gastric bypass since I've heard that type 2 diabetes is more quickly managed with the surgery and the ability to lose a higher percentage of weight in the first year. However, I had my consultation with my surgeon on Friday and he discussed both the sleeve and bypass. I've had my gall-bladder removed and a pelvic surgery and he mentioned that when someone has had pelvic surgery like I have that a few times he has run into issues performing the gastric bypass and that it was something for me to consider when I make my choice. However, he is leaving the choice up to me. I'm just afraid if I go with the sleeve that I won't be happy with the results but at the same time if my scarring is too bad from my previous surgeries he might not be able to perform the bypass on the day of surgery and have to end the surgery. So I'm torn between having the sleeve and maybe not being happy with the results and developing GERD or risking it and having the bypass with the chance of not being able to have the surgery.

I am a psychologist. Although I don't do bariatric evaluations, if the psychologist you selected is doing an interview with you and assessments (MMPI or some other personality instrument) then I don't believe $575 is too much. Those assessment instruments are expensive to purchase and to score, and there is usually a report that gets written and sent to the surgeon.

I did not have to pay anything, they are holding it until my deductible is met. Meaning I shouldn’t owe anything. That seems too expensive
