Zebby67 got a reaction from The 56 Bypass in I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?
I've lost 50 some odd lbs since December 10th 2018 RnY. I am biding my time for a knee replacement in one leg and have a bone disease in the other. A brace on both legs. I was doing so good then bad weather hit and put a kink in my exercise. I was just setting here disappointed in myself that I can only ride a bike approximately half a mile. Knowing later my legs are going to hurt like blazes. I keep trying and I'm told to just keep trying. When the pools open I hope to do Water exercises. Don't be discouraged my friend baby steps are going to get us where we are going as long as we keep trying and not give up or give in. Slow and steady wins the race. Thanks so much. The Water exercise is the best thing that has happened to me. I broke through my plateau after starting regular water exercise!! Thank you for the encouragement!!

@Ineedsthebeach, great minds think alike, I was just going to suggest the exact same thing for our friend. So much easier doing exercise with the water's buoyancy as a helper! Trust you're having a lovely day and a beautiful evening!💕😝💕

You wouldn’t want any part of my path! It was a very unhappy time. I hear my situation was not the normal of most. During the sleeve surgery, it was discovered I had an extremely large hiatal hernia. ( now I knew I had one from during the tests prior) But I didn’t know how large it was. So surgery was done at that time.. I was told by hospital staff that it was the worst stomach surgery to have! Then, I went home as usual, until 2 days later I was hospitalized for dehydration and much to the hospitals surprise very low blood count.. Hospitalized again for both. Required several units of blood along with fluids. I spent a lot of November in the hospital. They told me, my particular case would be a review study. Lucky me!
Returned home , very weak, eating very little and November 30th wound up with Cellulitis in both legs. Another hospitalization.. insane ?you are right!Today, almost 3 months out, I still have eating issues. My doctor feels it could be my personal situation with my abdomen and healing. While I am thrilled that much is off my body, I remain weak, want to be stronger and pray I stay out of the hospital!

When you think about it, there's logic there. As we lose the fat deposits all through our body, we lose our insulation. Now you sense temperature changes as you never did before. I'm sitting in a house with thermostat set at 72 degrees Fahrenheit clad in sweatshirt with tee-shirt underneath , sweatpants and socks on my feet. While I was formerly fat, I was barefoot, bicycle shorts and shirt of tank top indoors, oh my Have things changed, and now I kee0 a microfiber blankie within reach, just in case. Used to drink coffee early in the diet trek, but that went bye-bye when the ulcerations came, now it's Decaf tea to warm up. Have been allergic to chocolate for 43 years, so I don't have the comfort of sugar free cocoa like most of you. But it still beats DEAD all hollow, so I'm glad to be bypassed and alive! And daily I regret neither.

My doc had me up walking same day as surgery. She told me she wanted me to walk as much and as often as I could and that my goal should be walking a minimum of 1 hour per day (ideally all at one time). I started with only being able to make it about 5 minutes. Today I can walk 60+ minutes at one time on some days.
I would love to be able to jog/run. It's one of my goals for 2019.

I am 55 yrs old and started walking about 3 miles a day after having surgery. After about 6 months I started running. I was running up to 4 miles 3 times a week. I would have liked to run more but I have had re-constructive knee surgery on my right knee twice and have very little meniscus left. I ran 2 organized 5K's in 2018 so anything is possible. I tried the gym but just couldn't get into it. I still walk about 3 miles a day and run during warmer weather.

Sorry to hear about your rotator cuff and hernia issues. Lower body exercise works. Check with your dr to see if you are released to do treadmill or bike. Walking is great exercise. It will help you heal from surgery.

Part of this will be your mindset changing. What you WANT to do physically will shift. For instance, today I deliberately chose the bus rather than other transport, even knowing that would mean a mile walk to the office and then a mile walk back. I also randomly chose to take my dog on a much longer midday walk while on a conference call - altogether I walked 5 miles today, pretty effortlessly.
Before surgery, I would never, ever have done either of those things on a whim. Almost 100 lbs later, it’s just a nonissue.
I will say that you need to figure out your exercise groove. My sister needs to find a gym and sign up for classes, the financial commitment and schedule is what motivates her. Meanwhile I need an open pool pass and opportunistic walking. Neither of our routines would be sustainable or enjoyable for the other.

I was a true couch potato pre surgery. Committing to exercise was a necessary evil that I was not thrilled about. Exercise/activity does not mean you have to step inside a gym. Start slow. Do it even when you don't want to. It gets easier if you make it a habit. You will find you are stronger than you give yourself credit for.
Use your activity/exercise to replace. stress/emotional eating, head hunger or eating out of boredom. Make it a time to process all the changes and mental battles with weight loss. This is the time you carve out for yourself. Don't let anyone interrupt it.
Get zumba videos online and dance your butt off walk and make it about the destination. Take photos. As you get stronger and have more energy challenge yourself to do more. Plan a hike with beautiful views. Make exercise an adventure and not a chore. Buy exercise equipment at a thrift store. (stationary bike, dumbbells or a treadmill) Find your inner bad@ss! You never know where this journey will take you. Who knows how you will feel about exercise six months or a year from now. Many changes coming your way.

It's the only real exercise I can sustainably perform. So it's my main squeeze...
The way I see it is I have to walk in every day life so I'll just lose what I was always going to lose with it (no accelerated weight loss) but if I hit the gym for 18hrs 9 days a week then break my ankle I will gain back the 50 extra lbs I unnaturally lost.
    That's my lazy humble opinion.
    BUT
strength training will do wonders for the skin/muscle tone and cardio increases endurance. Do what you can, at the pace you can sustain.
    Safe Journey 🎈

I had my bypass in December. Walking in the beginning was great but I love the gym more. Walking is a great form of excercise, it should not slow your progress at all. Good luck with your surgery and your new journey.

Precisely. Topiramate is an antiepileptic medication used off label for weight loss. I was part of a drug study back in the mid-late 1990's testing the efficacy of Topamax for weight loss. Instead of helping me lose weight, it caused me to have horrible neurological symptoms. I had absence seizures, lost the ability to find words (I can remember talking to my husband and not being able to find the word for dinner - I kept asking him what he wanted for "um, um, that thing you eat at 6 pm".

Saxenda is specifically a weight loss drug. The lesser dose is prescribed as Victoza, and that is to help control blood sugar. In my case, Victoza was covered by insurance but Saxenda was not. So my doctor gave me an RX and sample pens to double the doses so I'd be getting a Saxenda dose. I took it for 9 months before surgery and lost about 35 pounds. It works as an appetite suppressant.

Honestly, I mean take your physician's advice, but I was on multiple SSRIs before, and SSRIs mixed with antipsychotics, and all kinds of things that "say" they increase the risk for serotonin syndrome, but it's pretty much really unlikely. And you'll know if something is off and you just stop the other medicine right away.
