Anyone here have issues with ability to exercise? My right knee is bone on bone (and trust me I’m not ready for another surgery anytime soon!) and walking is difficult and painful. I had hoped dropping the almost 30 pounds would help and it did marginally but I’m kind of sad and discouraged by this. I want to go and do so much. ☹️

Hand in there! 30 pounds didn't cut it much for me, either. I am now down 65 lb from date of surgery and am finally coming alive!! 🙂 Be patient with yourself. You will get there!

  2. Sounds like it's working, good job!

Hi Ed. Today I weigh 201. I have settled into a bit of a routine. About 3-4 days per week I follow this regime and about 3-4 days per week I'm off of it and follow my normal diet, then back on, etc. I'm now maintaining a steady weightloss. The first year after surgery is our golden opportunity for weightloss, no hunger, no cravings. We shouldn't squander it, but use it to our advantage.

  3. I know I've been on here a few times to discuss my diet. I had surgery March 14th 2019 (bypass) and I can't seem to get things in. I can't drink enough or eat the puree like I'm supposed to. It's Saturday at almost 2am and I'm on the couch sobbing. My stomach has been growling. I almost burst into tears tonight when we were out for my boyfriends birthday dinner with his family but I didn't. I held it together. I can't figure out how to make this all work. I think I'm severely dehydrated and literally starving. I have a few things going on that are complicating things for me and they are both so dumb. One is that I have multiple friends who've had this surgery done that are insisting that I do this or that, that I shouldn't be on purees yet. I have a neighbor I frequently hang out with that has A friend who's had this surgery so she thinks she knows all about it and is trying to tell me what to do and how I should feel. The other thing is that I'm really normally a very tough person. No one is used to seeing me hurt or struggle. I'm not the type to complain. I'm a lead singer in two different bands and I've taken seriously bad falls off the stage and chipped bones once and split my face open on another occasion and just kept rolling with the night so everyone just thinks I feel nothing but this is different. It's not the pain that bothers me and to me the pain wasn't even so bad it's that every time I feel pain or just something different it's scary because it could be an indicator to something being wrong and I get really anxious. I'm so grateful for this forum because honestly it's the one place I can come and not only be vulnerable and honest and know the people here won't just say hey you're right Jezz, you'll be fine. I don't even know what this post is about. It's the mad rantings of a hungry, tired, frustrated person trying to figure it out. I just feel lost and I can't wait until Monday so I can call my Dr and get help. I'm just REALLY afraid to eat and feel like I'm waisting away. Not getting Protein. Again I'm so sorry. (Half of me hopes no one reads this, the other half of me is praying that someone completely relates with me because I feel crazy)

Your stomach is still swollen from the surgery. You're not going to get a lot of things in and if your surgeon had advanced you to puree, then puree it is. However, hasn't your surgeon also explained that it will take you very long to eat right now? This is how you get on what you need, by setting adding 40-60 minutes for a meal and very slowly taking it in. This is very very very very early in your surgery. Be very very very careful and especially be patient. There is no need to cry over anything at this point. Instead, be thrilled you have a new tool the will serve you well so long as you follow your SURGEON's direction and not your friends! Be in daily contact with your surgeon's dietician. This is where your anchor can be found. Not here on Bariatric Pal and NOT your friends. Your anchor is in the program at your surgeon's office.

I also used Dr. Felix at Hope Bariatrics and am very happy with him and all of his staff. I had my gastric bypass 6/8/17 at St Clair Hospital. I only wish I had done is sooner. No complications at all.

I'm about 30 minutes east of Pittsburgh, you?

I am in Pittsburgh and thinking about gastric bypass with Dr. Courcoulis. I thought I wanted gastric sleeve but they seem to prefer bypass. I am three months in but still very unsure about this whole thing.

Dr. Courcoulis was my surgeon, too! Are you going to the monthly support groups? I was there for the first time this past March meeting. Were you there??? I am located actually 30 minutes east of Pittsburgh. You? As for the surgery, I originally wanted sleeve and wasn't eligible because of a hiatal hernia. I am so grateful for the bypass! What is causing you to hesitate??

I watched your latest video on YouTube today. Thanks for the helpful charts and info. That's pretty cool how you broke all of the numbers down. You sound very determined and that's a great inspiration.

You're so sweet. Thank you! My plan is working. On the day of that video, I weighed 219. Today I weigh 210!! 🙂

I forget sometimes people in other countries don't have access to Amazon like here in the U.S. It's so stinking convenient. I don't know if you have access to a good medical grade Protein like genpro but it's flavorless and can be mixed with Water flavoring and you can make your own Protein Water. @The 56 Bypass does that and it works for her.

It sounds like you are taking the same Vitamins as me except the Nut has me taking a probiotic as well. I just do a once daily bariatric multi with Iron. I have to wait a few hours after the multi before taking the calcium citrate with D3. I drink a zipfizz every other day and my B12 is off the charts. I'll insert some pics of the 2 things I mentioned.

Yes. I have been using GENEPRO to break a weight loss stall that began about 8-9 weeks post-op and continued through to 11 weeks. I'd still be in it had I not changed what I was doing. I came up with the solution described below to break my stall/slowed down weight loss as I was thinking about the days right after my surgery. My surgeon has her patients on Clear Liquids for 14, yes, 14 days!!!!! following surgery. No protein, no vitamins.....ONLY CLEAR liquids and medications for 14 days. I lost a pound or two a day on the regimen. Since my weight loss had drastically slowed, I was significantly behind on the amount of weight I am expected to lose by my next surgeon appointment and decided I would go back to post-surgery basics, but with protein, meds and Vitamins added. I began this regimen on Thursday, March 14th, weighing 219lb. Today, I weighed in at 210 pounds.

Here is what I do: I take three 16 ounce bottles of water and to them I add 1 scoop Genepro, which is flavorless, 30g protein and only 60 calories. You can drink it plain or flavor it however you,d like, just don't add calories more than 20, perhaps, with whatever you choose. I add sugar free decaffeinated ice tea powder to mine. These three bottles become my "meals" for the day, Breakfast, lunch, supper, giving me 90g protein for the day and only 180 calories. In between these "meals" I drink another 16 ounce bottle of water, giving me a total 96 oz water for the day. Additionally, I take all my meds and vitamins as I am supposed to throughout the day.

Once I reach 209 pounds I will be at the bare minimum of where my surgeon expects her patients to be at 3 months post-op, which puts me at the 50th percentile. I plan on continuing this regimen for the entire 14 days in order to get as near to 201 by the end on March, early April, which will put me in the 75th percentile, which is a MUCH better place to be. Anything below the 50th percentile is considered to be a weight loss surgery patient failure. This info is taken from a Duke University study conducted to discover early weight loss predictors for success or failure among weight loss surgery patients. I explain this study and provide links in the video I've posted here in my status update on Bariatric Pal. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. :-)

  8. I ended up not being eligible for the sleeve, due to a large hiatal hernia. So I ended up getting the gastric bypass on Dec 26, 2018. Our insurance plan doesn't cover bariatrics, so I had to pay $25,000 upfront. I don't have that kidnd of money laying around, so I cashed in my IRAs and had just enough. I was doing so poorly before the surgery that I knew I wasn't going to be around to enjoy that IRA money. I sure am enjoying it now! 🙂 Uncle Sam will be wanting his cut, tho. 😞

RNY on 2/5, went home early on 2/6. Haven’t taken pain meds since 2/6. I have no pain and no nausea. I want to ask if I could be causing an issue. When my surgeon’s office called on Friday to check on me she kept asking if I was gulping Water. I’m not taking gulps but I have been taking small sips in a row which probably equals a gulp. I haven’t had any issues from this. I think I have been very fortunate so far. I’m not having any hunger or head hunger yet (I know it will come eventually). Just want to make sure I’m not causing any pouch damage I’m not aware of.

You'll know it if you gulp Water. It WILL HURT! I am 6.5 weeks post-op rny and only now can take swallows, rather than sips, but NO GULPING because I know the pain it causes. I've noticed that if I take my regular swallows too close together, it can hurt. If you are just sipping and even sipping back-to-back, you are doing fine. I have found my gulp mistakes have been made when I have been distracted (same thing with eating mistakes). If there are people around and I am in a conversation or in front of a screen, it is very easy to forget our present selves and revert back to old behaviors and boy, do we pay for it! That's when I am in danger of gulping my fluids or eating foods too fast. Suffering soon follows to remind us of our new self and the changes we've made and are making. We must also change our default, non-thinking mode by consistent practice so we eventually no longer revert back to our old selves. Happy losing, my dear! 🙂

  10. Wise ones,
At my goal weight and just over 18months past surgery, I am becoming aware of some of my old, bad, eating habits creeping back in. The one I'm focusing on at the moment is this: When I am eating, and just after I'm done, all I can think about is eating more and/or again. I'm not hungry, but it seems that if I haven't eaten so much that I feel uncomfortable or sick, I just want more. I try not to give in, try to wait for a specific period of time, try to write down what I've eaten immediately.... but I'm really struggling with this.
I guess I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop and start gaining weight again. This hasn't happened, but I worry about my capacity for self-fulfillment of my fears!
Any advice or empathy is welcome! I'm going to work on checking in more on this forum again. I had gotten out of the habit in the last year, but I think it will help.

I'm 6.5 weeks out from RNY and find myself with the same problem. I will be discussing it with my therapist today. Are you in therapy for your good addiction? This is a major symptom.

I’m doing the Protein shots because nothing taste right, and I’m having a hard time finding really soft or mushy foods. I’m also doing yogurt.

I am mixing one TBLSP of GENEPRO (30g protein) in my yogurt, cottage cheeses, etc, to get in the needed Protein. Its available on Amazon and worth it. Absolutely no taste. I can't drink the protein shakes....ugh! Genepro is my life saver!

  12. Way to go!! I have lost 21 since surgery. I had a bit of a stall when I went to pureed foods. I think I had lost a lot of muscle weight during the pre-op liquid and post op. I went back to work on the 9th, so my activity level increased about 500%. I was having a hard time getting in Protein, but doing better now. Staying hydrated is a little hard. At work, I keep a small bottle with me that is a mixture of Powerade Zero, Water, and ice. All my work clothes are too big now. Lol.

All clothes being too big is way better than then all being too small. [emoji23] Good for you!

I was on Clear Liquids for a week. Now I am on full liquids. I had a little cream of chicken Soup (strained) today. My program is pretty strict.

I was on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks post surgery. I thought I was going to die of starvation! But alas, here I am! I am now on a 4 week stint of pureed/soft foods. I see the surgeon again on Feb 7th. I have no idea what's coming next. I am down 25 lb post surgery at the moment. Its never been so easy to so consistenly lose weight. Really amazing!

    Hello!

I also had my surgery on the 26th. So far I’ve been feeling ok. The gas pain was pretty bad but other than that it was just a matter of being tired. Today I drove for the first time and I feel great. I’ve decided to only weigh my self every Wednesday so I can track weekly process. With that being said after week 1 I had lost 18.2lbs. My eyes almost fell out of my head!

I am craving different things like cheese and savory foods. But it’s not a hunger issue, it’s all in my head, so it will take some time for me to fight the bad habit of eating when bored or feeling blah.

SO glad its progressing well for you. How is it going now, 1 month out?

Well, it’s been 4 weeks since our surgeries. So far I’ve lost 25.5lbs and I’m super excited about it.
I’m still struggling with my fluids and learning how to eat slowly.
    How’s everyone else doing???

I'm down 25 last time I weighed )a day ago, I think). Since surgery was a Wednesday, I'll be weighing tomorrow. We shall see!

WOOHOOO that's great! I'm doing really well. I've lost 22 lbs :) My pants are are much loser and so are my tops. I'm having problems with the Protein Drinks and the Vitamin. I need to call my NUT and ask for another one. I just can't stomach them. I basically get my Protein from the foods I eat. I can pretty much eat anything as long as I puree it or chew it up really good. I made sloppy joe's the other night. I ate a little bit of it, without the bun of course. It was delicious LOL. I'm trying to get the Water in but that is just too hard. I'm probably getting about 40-50 oz of Water so not bad.

I'm struggling with Protein and water, too.
