This stuff makes me furious. I've spoken up in the past when people make those sorts of comments to me or in my hearing (usually online, where they don't know my own struggles and body type) but sometimes in person too. In situations where they've decided I'm one of the "good ones" because they know me, they see me trying. Where as they see any one that is larger and, heaven forbid, looks happy, and they assume that person is too happy, too comfortable, and that makes them uncomfortable. Not that they want to see the strangers trying either, half of the the time it seems these comments are about an obese person eating a salad, or at the gym. They want us to change, but out of sight so they dont have to see it.

I usually try to explain that they dont understand all the science, that its more complicated then they think, that they cant make assumptions about people like that. Sometimes I even try to explain skinny privilege. It never works. They dont want to change their minds, so they dont.

Mean while I've gotten more and more angry and sick of it.

I think as it is an issue at work for you, talking to HR might be the best move...if you trust your HR person/people to not be part of the problem... And depending on the situation calling your co-workers out would probably at least make you feel guilt free. Something as simple as "That you'd talk about ____ like this is really disappointing." It might not endear you to them, but with people who are that casually nasty? No big loss.

It's a strange thing because not too long ago in my memory, I was 150lbs lighter. I remember being that same person you describe... very judgmental. I wouldn't make fun of people to their face, except my mother who I would outright call fat and just be cruel to (I was a nasty teenager), but I would definitely sit and snicker with my friends. Now the tables are turned and I understand the struggle. People who have never experienced morbid obesity or the conditions or circumstances that got us this way can never understand. That being said, outside of the workplace, I will probably completely verbally snap on someone if I hear them making fun of someone who is overweight. After all of this, I don't think I'd have the restraint to say anything kindly.

@mousecat88 thank you for posting that video! That was incredibly helpful. I actually took a few screen shots. I wish my surgeons office had explained the mental/emotional side of things a little better and that video seals a lot of holes in my knowledge. Thank you!!!!

I was sleeved 10/16/17 with a highest weight of 347, surgery weight of 283. This morning I weighed 174.2! What a year it has been. Ups and downs, struggles and successes, and figuring out the new me. I was a 3xl shirt and 44" waist, and am now wearing a Large slim fit shirt and 32" pants. Life is much more enjoyable with my new found energy, ability to move around, and to squeeze through places I never thought of before. The year has flown by pretty quickly, and I am so happy to have made the decision to go forward with surgery.

I start my pre-op tomorrow. I recently broke up with my bf (like 3 weeks ago recently) of nearly 5 years for, well, many reasons, but one being that he started being an a-s and finally told me it was because he thought I'd leave him after I lost weight. My only other "support" is my mom, who is going to be there for the surgery, but she is completely against me having it. She considers it elective and tells me I am mutilating myself. SO, I am relying on basically just this forum as my real support system. We can do it all by ourselves! It's for us, ultimately, and no one else has any say.

Check out this short video from my surgeon's office. It's from the previous psych doc they had on staff (they have a new one now). It was required to watch it yesterday. It explains everything you may be experiencing regarding mental health and what's normal and what isn't : The post op stuff starts at 2:50.

Yikes! When I had major full-body liposuction back in 2009, I blacked out in the shower about 3 times. Terrifying experience. Fortunately didn't injure myself - well, I couldn't really tell because my entire body was already covered in massive bruises.

I am using the powdered Celebrate for pre-op and it is very tart. lol. It's raspberry lemonade flavored. I diluted it the full 8 ounces and it's still like a sour candy. I think I am going to switch to a chewable after my supply is out.

Today was my first day on my pre op diet. For the first day I did pretty well. My dietitian has me on 3 Protein Shakes a day (equaling 60 grams of protein). One small meal a day that consist of 4 0z Protein 1/2 of a complexes carb, and unlimited veggies all throughout the day.

Yeah so let me not get started with my husband and mom. My husband actually called my parents and they in turn called my siblings and everyone is blasting me for doing this. The entire family is blasting me. My husband said, "If your whole family is telling you not to do this then you shouldn't be doing this you should listen to your family." I told him he totally betrayed my trust and if I wanted my family to know I would have told them. It's a bad situation right now. My mom had a friend who got the surgery a LONG time ago, I mean ages along with her daughter. They both passed away and my mom associates that with the surgery. First and foremost, my mom doesn't even know what surgery they had but she's telling me that is the reason why I shouldn't do this. It's been really really emotional for me. My sister then called and asked me if I was doing this for my husband. It's all crazy town I tell you as if I can't soley make this decision for myself. I am glad for folks like you. We have to hold each other up and be supportive with each other. It's all I have right now. Also, keep your head up, your boyfriend is losing out.

I just watched a required video course for my surgery and it said if I have any food intolerance (upset stomach, something sticking, etc) to go back to full liquid for 24 hours to allow everything to settle down. My post-op manual also says I should be on soft foods by week 3. 1 week liquid, 1 week puree, then soft foods, introducing one new food per day. Should be eating anything by 6 months.

mousecat88 got a reaction from Frustr8 in Gallbladder Removal Question?
I am having gastric in 3 weeks and my ultrasound showed I had A LOT of gallstones. They won't remove it during surgery because where they put the instruments isn't ideal for removing the gallblader without doing open surgery. They are going to prescribe me gallstone medicine to try to prevent more from forming after surgery. I don't have any issues with my gallbladder hurting me now. I am scared that since I already have a lot in there, that it may get worse, but the docs have assured me that the medicine will stop new ones from forming so I shouldn't worry.

Thank you. After seeing some photos and hearing some scary stories I was super nervous but I kept my trust and faith in my surgeon and the Lords hands. When I got home and unwrapped my arms for the first time (photos above) I couldn’t believe I didn’t even have bruising. I’m blessed. I hope you both get to see your dream of plastics soon ❤️

I know having seasonings and spices are fine after surgery, but what about serious hot sauces? I asked my nutritionist about it, and she was like "oh, curry powder and red pepper flakes are fine!"
No, no. I meant like Trinidad Scorpion/Carolina Reaper Death Sauce kind of hot sauce. Start-crying-when-you-smell-it hot sauce.
Currently, I don't get any upset stomach from any level of the Scoville. I douse crazy hot sauce on pretty much everything.
Anyone a hot sauce junkie? Can you tolerate it post-op?

You should wait until after you lose the weight. This is considered the relation destroyer of surgeries for a reason. Chances are, if you form a relationship with someone now, it will be based on your current physical appearance. A lot of dudes like plus sized women and you will no longer qualify at 140 lbs. Don't kid yourself into thinking a person will be attracted to you initially, based on your personality and things you share in common (and those too shall change after your weight loss). Think long term to save yourself the drama. Focus on the task at hand. This is for your health first and foremost. Good luck!
