My surgeon said a week but set up an appointment the Monday after my Wednesday operation! I took pain meds the day of surgery and the day after and didn't need anymore after that. I would not have been ok to drive either of those days. By that Monday I was more then ready (walking more than an hour a day, healing fast) and it was safe for me to drive. But I will not drive with any alcohol in my system and I would not have driven if I was still on the pain meds. Also, the first few days i was still pretty loopy from surgery so I doubt I was ok to drive for at least for 4 days including surgery day. Don't drive with drugs in your system, don't drive if you can't go for a long walk, and don't drive if your brain is foggy. Once you are back to par you should be fine to drive and I suspect it will depend on how your system responds to the shock it will undergo.
Good luck!

I posted some of this in an earlier thread but since it is still happening though I would update it. I agree that even in the few months I've been on this site there seems to be a growing increase in validation for people not following the doctor's recommendations. It is dangerous and stupid and those people should be shown tough love because they are screwing up the future of a bunch of addicts who need to change their lives or die. (Ok, so I only believe in the tough part - not everyone deserves my love.)
I see it more with the younger set whose attitudes are starting to drive me nuts - "I'll do whatever I want." But others are starting to follow their examples. Fine, but don't try to talk others into your bad behavior. As indicated by some of the very knowledgeable moderators slippage has doubled recently. DOUBLED! That should scare you. The band will help about 50% of the people banded lose weight in the long run (antidotes about bad banders who lost weight notwithstanding - our own urban legends) which means 50% of the people will fail yet again at losing weight. If that's the case, I'm going to listen to the ones that are have lost a hundred pounds like Coltonwade or at goal or below as they did what they had to for success. I also feel like I can determine who is going to fail by their posts. If one week out of surgery your biggest concern is how to get around doctor's orders odds are you do not have the right mindset yet to make this work. I also suspect that as the band gets more popular and people come to sites like this where they find validation for bad behavior the success rate of the band will also fall.
The moderators and the "get-arounders" both have the rights to post here. However, if you are a human capable of critical thinking (a skill America is rapidly losing) YOU should be listening to the people who have been through the process and succeeded, not the people looking for validation to stuff their faces with all the wrong foods at the wrong time then bitch and moan at how bad their surgeon must have been when the band fails them. Please keep posting moderators - most of us are far more interested in what you have to say then in what the cheaters say to excuse themselves.
Disclosure - this was not aimed at anyone in particular. It was a general rant not meant to make any individual feel bad. (Really general since it was copied from an earlier post!) If your feelings were hurt by it you need to examine why, but it wasn't meant to hurt you. It's meant to make you think for yourself instead of following the bad sheep of the world. If you haven't been perfect (and gosh knows I haven't!) start being better today. You are so lucky to have this opportunity - treat it like the blessing it is! Change your mind, change your behavior, change what you eat and it will work. And every time you do something right give yourself a mental hug and a "good job!" We've all been conditioned to beat ourselves up for failure but you will go a lot further if you give yourself positive reinforcement for all your successes!
I think the fact that every single surgeon has a different diet to follow pre and post-op makes it very difficult to know what is right, and I hope that soon long-term studies will show exactly which instructions are the most likely to succeed. Regardless however, you need to listen to your surgeon and not seek validation here for bad behavior. We all slip up - it's ok to admit that as the original poster did, and when we do we shouldn't be belittled for trying to seek advice on our mistake. (In fact, some of the response to the original post seemed a little harsh since the person admitted they made a mistake.) But when people ask for advice on what they can do to correct a potential problem the "I did it so you'll be ok" posts are dangerous. Unless you are an MD who specializes in this procedure you should not be telling people that not following the diet won't hurt them. Not only are you endangering them but also everyone who comes to this site seeking advice. Please be very careful doing this.

I'm bumping this up because I did start running this week and darn it, I want a training buddy! :biggrin2:

Sorry about the delay. My computer blew up Saturday night and I just couldn't find enough time to get to this at work. But the computer is back thanks to great customer service at Dell so I updated the list. Tomorrow the last July Butterfly goes in. Can any of you believe that July would go so quickly and that getting banded would actually happen?!

I was banded on the 2nd and couldn't think about drinking anything but Water and some apple juice my first 3-4 days. I wouldn't worry about it. The desire for a variety of tastes and textures will come back soon enough. For now, he needs to be really taking it easy, letting his body heal and listening to it. It will let him know when it's time to take the next step.

Hi Mackie:
I don't know if a knot is normal or not. I don't have one. Can you be a little more descriptive? Do you mean a knot near your breastbone? Or a knot near your long port scar which is probably more common?
I recommend you post this question in the post-surgery area and see if anyone has had experience with it. I hope you get an answer, but anytime you are worried about something - call your doctor immediately!
Good luck and keep us updated.
Thanks Susan it work. When Im online I stay on these forums,I read alot. This helps me and you help me. Thanks so much.I need to ask something, I have a knot right above where my band is.
Is this normal?
Thanks Mackie

Anyone in San Diego interested in setting up a thread to encourage each other to train for the Carlsbad Marathon or Half Marathon in January? Here's a link if you want more information:
I'd like to train for the half marathon, but would love to have a group of others who are losing weight and getting healthy and have the same goal. It can be all online or we can meet for training sessions when it makes sense.
Thanks! Susan

Thanks for the nice words Barb. This thread has been helpful to me too - just the mental support of knowing everyone is doing this with me is great! And I am doing great - I think I had the best surgery experience ever!
Charlene - nice encouragement! I told my surgeon how prone I was to motion sickness and I am pretty sure they gave me some powerful anti-nausea drugs because that was NEVER an issue for me. (Although I am almost never nausea unless on a boat or backseat of a car, etc.) So if you are worried about/prone to nausea let the doctors know and they may be able to help you prevent it!
-
I was lucky - didn't have to worry about any health conditions and no false starts. But I wanted to wish you the best of luck and I hope everything goes perfectly this time!
-
I'm not going to go through a list and try to determine who added what names or whose date has changed. I have added everyone who has told me their dates but I don't trust the cut and pasted lists because people add their info but not everyone before them and it gets too confusing. If you want to tell me your date you can tell me, otherwise I will keep posting the list I have.
-
What a great week and congrats on the quitting smoking. That's a tough one but better lungs will look good with your better body!!

I've lost one 2-year-old brat. Guess that's why they don't let me babysit anymore.:biggrin2:
-
I kept thinking my giant liver would pop out and attack the surgeon and he'd cancel.:biggrin2:
I also had a nightmare the night before that I ate a sugar-free popsicle past the time allowed and the entire staff was screaming at me about having to come in for no surgery.
Yeah, I'd say the fears are pretty rampant but the vast majority of people are fine and all goes well so experience your fears with a grain of realism.
-
My big "Aha" came when I realized I wasn't finishing my book because I didn't want to go on the local TV shows to promote it. I never felt like I weighed what the scale said I weighed, but photos always hit home with the truth. I certainly knew I did not want to see myself on TV with its "free" added pounds.
"Shut up, the camera adds ten pounds." "Ahh, so how many cameras are actually on you?" :biggrin2:Friends.
-
I so get the Big Mac thing! I've been craving them for weeks and keep threatening to put one into a blender when I get to the mushies stage!:biggrin2:
Now I HATE McDonald's and am not a fan of Big Macs (I'm a Whopper girl and haven't craved one in weeks.) So I had to ask myself, why am I craving a food I haven't willingly eaten in years? Then I realized that I am watching a bunch of TV during my recovery (and OMG daytime television sucks!) and Mickey D's is running tons and tons of ads showing the Big Mac in its best light. I mean, it looks like food and not cardboard with Condiments.
So listen to your cravings in one respect - if you need Protein your body will ask for it and you might need to up your shakes or add in some additional powder. But also be aware of unusual triggers that might hit you in your compromised state like ads that normally you'd ignore. If your cravings are emotional you have to start working on the head hunger - remind yourself you are healing and those foods will not be good for you and praise yourself each night that you successfully avoid the triggers.
On a general note: Joiful had crappy, crappy follow-up care and is trying to do this basically on her own. So this is not directed at her because she is listening to people and learning (on her own!) what is right to do. But I agree that even in the few months I've been on this site there seems to be a growing increase in validation for people not following the doctor's recommendations.
If that's the case, I'm going to listen to the ones that are at goal or below as they did what they had to for success.
However, if you are a human capable of critical thinking (a skill America is rapidly losing) YOU should be listening to the people who have been through the process and succeeded, not the people looking for validation to stuff their faces with all the wrong foods then bitch and moan at how bad their surgeon must have been when the band fails them. Please keep posting moderators - most of us are far more interested in what you have to say then in what the cheaters say to excuse themselves.
Disclosure - this was not aimed at anyone in particular. It was a general rant not meant to make any individual feel bad. If your feelings were hurt by it you need to examine why, but it wasn't meant to hurt you.
Let the flaming begin!

I did it alone. You have to have someone drive you home from the hospital - trust me you will be impaired. And I would have a safety person who you can call in an emergency and who will check on you if you don't contact them each morning and evening. But I hate having people around when I don't feel good and I certainly didn't want anyone hovering around me after surgery.
I stock up with Water and all the fluids I would need for the first two weeks. I also have ice and heat pads that worked well, lots of Gas X, and several clean sleepshirts and sheets. A friend helped me the first night by feeding the dogs and getting my stuff set up (the very helpful drugs) and I was lucky in that the first night I could sleep in my bed.
I used a body pillow to sleep the first night (and everynight since.) I sleep on my right side with my left leg draped over the pillow which has meant a great night's sleep each night since surgery. I am not sure how well I would have slept on my back.
Good luck!

I was banded on the 2nd and haven't lost an oz. Have eaten between zero and 860 calories over the last 11 days so I think I'm just retaining Water and am not worried about it. I am so ready to hit the gym but have to wait a few more weeks so having to settle for walking.
I wouldn't worry too much about the first month, let your body heal and get over the trauma. I get my first fill the 28th (although I am rarely hungry so so far don't need it) and will start worrying about weight-loss after that.

San Diegans - Carlsbad Marathon or 1/2 Marathon 1/25/09????
in Fitness & Exercise

I don't know. I thought I would be further ahead in training by now so I doubt that I'll be ready to run a 1/2 marathon that soon but I'm willing to set up training goals with you (or anyone else) so we can at least see how well we're doing and begin to pace ourselves. Any interest?
