I guess every surgeon is different when it comes to pre-op diets. My surgeon only recommends liquid diet the day before surgery. I'm going to ask him when I go to my pre-0p appointment why that is?

What type of surgery will you be having done? Depends on the job requirements you have. You can’t life for several weeks and you truly need rest to recouperate. I had the sleeve done on the 10th and I return to work on the 23rd. I am a registered nurse but work from home on the computer. Wanted to give myself enough time to rest and get into a good drinking pattern. Don’t be in a rush to get back. Listen to your body. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I was pretty tired the first two weeks. Then after that it was a crap shoot day to day. I'd say by month two the "trauma" of surgery lost its effect on my energy level. I had surgery on a Wednesday and went back to work the following Monday. For me it was doable.

I had surgery on May 18th and was back at work by the 24th. The few days I did stay at home were driving me crazy, because I had thoughts of regret, was tired, and in a little pain. My job doesn't require heavy lifting, but I did get tired midday and take naps on my lunch break for the first week. Overall, going back helped me take my mind off the fact that I had surgery. It kept me busy. Just listen to your body.

Here's my take and experience on the pre-op diet. The doctor wanted to see a 15-25 pound loss before surgery to shrink the liver. So he required a 1600 calorie high protein/modified carbohydrate diet, the same diet he asks all his patients to undertake. I started at 326 and by surgery date I was at 301. No special diet immediately before surgery except for a couple days of liquid diet to clean me out.
Since I was 69 and on medicare I was required to have 4 visits with a nutritionist to get approval for surgery. So over the four months for these visits I followed the requested diet and lost the weight my surgeon requested. The nutritionist was certainly helpful but one could probably do it without that assistance if you are properly motivated.
Having said that. I am attaching the diet plan and a couple items I typed up to make it easier to follow. Also tracked my intakes to ensure I was on target.

The high Protein pre op and post op diets left me constipated (never had an issue prior). I’ve picked up some Smooth Move tea and that seems to really help move things.

Maybe it's the fat content? Here is the first thing that popped up on Google:
The egg white contains about 4 grams of Protein, 55 mg of sodium and only 17 calories. The egg yolkscarry the cholesterol, the fat and saturated fat of the egg. One egg yolk has around 55 calories, 4.5 grams of total fat and 1.6 grams of saturated fat, 210 mg of cholesterol, 8 mg of sodium, and 2.7 grams of protein.

I don’t have kids myself so I cannot speak to that perspective so much. However I do have nieces and nephews. My brother and his wife have taken the healthy food thing too far. My 12 year old niece should not necessarily know “oh that has a lot of calories in it” yes I would want them making healthy choices but I would not want my niece to have an unhealthy body image problem going into her teen years. They have made it uncomfortable to be around them at family holidays bc of how much they discuss healthy food and this and that. There should be a point when you just enjoy if it’s a family function or holiday and not make others feel so uncomfortable. Moderation and controlling your potion sizes is always a good idea to keep in mind.

Oh eff them all......start asking them personal questions, shuts them up really fast - 'so how was your last appointment at the gyno?' (proctologist, prostrate exam, ear wax removal, root canal) 'how much money did your ex get in the divorce anyway? That much, huh?
Somehow weight issues get an open season on opinions that are no one's beeswax.

@Matt Z I planned on discussing it with my surgeon but I do want to hear what other diets people are on out there. I’m self paying for surgery... there is no doubt in my mind this was another thing to add on to the bill.

When I said angry, emotional and feel starved... what female do you know that is not a pure asshole when they are hungry? Lol I was looking for support here from others whom have these emotions as well.

Body Dysmorphia - I don't get it and yet I have it. I see many people comment after they've lost their weight that they still feel like the fat girl. That they still see a fat girl in the mirror. They wonder if people are staring at them as they shop in the regular section of the clothing stores because they still feel like they should belong in the plus section.
This baffles me. I'm not trying to be rude. Its just that as a preop sleever, I experience the total opposite. I'm a skinny girl trapped in a plus size body. I'm constantly looking in the mirror and wondering why my body looks like a bloated version of how I feel I am. I get mildly insulted when someone says something to me about being a big girl or a plus sized girl (even if they were totally being kind and not rude at all).
I joke to my friends that I'm trans-thin. I seriously CAN'T WAIT to get the body my mind thinks I belong in.
But I guess what I'm questioning now is: doesn't everyone getting the surgery feel the same as me? That was my assumption. Am I alone in feeling this way? And more importantly - a year from now is my brain going to switch to the opposite body dysmorphia in some cruel joke?

@ Matt Z actually no I didn’t say any of those things. I think you more harsh than supportive in your first comment... and well now your second comment. Bc it’s the internet.. it’s easy to take things out of context.

I wrote on here to get support as people said.. this is a place for support. I also wrote on here out of curiosity as to what other pre-op diets others are on. Not once did I say I was not going to follow my surgeons instructions.

If part of the whole process is dealing with the emotions of it and I don’t have anyone around me going through it, then wouldn’t be smart to reach out to others that are? All you have done is discouraged me from getting on any of these forums at all. I didn’t disrespect you in any way nor did I twist anything you said.

    Good luck to you!

I think this take is a bit extreme.
Many of us, including myself, had no pre op diet. So it certainly isn't a necessity. I'm not saying go against Dr.'s orders, but this isn't something universally agreed upon by Bariatric surgeons like "protein first". Also the OP's description of being forced to buy dehydrated food isn't the norm, and sounds worse than the normal pre op diet.
I have never felt "starved, angry, emotional", at all. Well only emotional when I'm losing my hair by the handful maybe. This isn't some kind of torturous process, for me at least. I have never lost weight so easily before in my life.
